Commemoration ceremony to honor Pearl Harbor, WWII survivors
December 7, 2011
PEARL HARBOR (HawaiiNewsNow) - On Dec. 7, 1941 the Imperial Japanese Navy unleashed a surprise attack on the Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor and Airfields in Ewa, windward and central Oahu.
More than 350 Japanese aircraft were launched in two waves from six carriers.
In total, 21 ships were damaged or destroyed including eight battleships.
More than 2,300 people were killed including 49 civilians.
Among those losses, 1,177 men were killed aboard the U.S.S. Arizona. The sunken memorial lives on as a constant remind of that infamous day.
On Wednesday, a ceremony will be held at the WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument located on the back lawn of the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.

Pearl Harbor attack, 70 years ago, still fresh in the memories of old sailors
By Bruce Newman
Posted December 6, 2011, Updated December 7, 2011
From Dec. 7, 1941 until long after VJ Day and the end of World War II, Americans referred to the Japanese strike against Pearl Harbor as a "sneak attack." In his declaration of war before a joint session of Congress the next day, President Franklin Roosevelt captured the nation's shock and fury, promising it would be "a date which will live in infamy."
But on this 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day, with old war wounds healed and racial sensitivities heightened, the phrase used more often to describe that day is "surprise attack." For most Americans, the "infamy" of Dec. 7, 1941 has receded since Sept. 11, 2001.
The survivors of those doomed ships -- many from the Bay Area -- are mostly hard of hearing now, but the buzz and the boom of the bombs from that day still ring in the ears of John Tait of Concord, Ed Silveira of Hayward and Dempson Arellano of Antioch. Gordon Van Hauser, who lived in San Carlos until his death in 2008, often spoke of his service not in terms of fighting for his own life, but for the life of his country.

At 70th anniversary, Pearl Harbor survivors' group prepares to disband
December 7, 2011
EARL HARBOR, Hawaii -- Under calm skies 70 years to the day of the attack on Pearl Harbor, about 120 survivors gathered Wednesday to mark the anniversary with ceremonies that began with a moment of silence for the 2,400 Americans who lost their lives.
And towards the end, it came with an announcement that seemed inevitable: The Pearl Harbor Survivors Association will disband on Dec. 31.
Association President William Muehleib cited the age and poor health of remaining members.
"It was time. Some of the requirements became a burden," Muehleib said after the ceremony.
The association has 2,700 members but there are an estimated 7,000 to 8,000 Pearl Harbor survivors. Local chapters will function as long as they have members and survivors can gather socially, but they will no longer have a formal, national group that organizes an annual trip for the anniversary.

Pearl Harbor Day, 70 Years Later … A Date Which Will Always Live in Infamy

______
Why does the liberal media refuse to identify the enemy of the 911 attacks on the World Trade Center? Why must Islam/Muslims be appeased through a distorted account of history each year when 911 victims and their families are being honored?
SM ... thank you for honoring the victims and survivors of the JAPANESE attack at Pearl Harbor on that dark day in American history ... that dark day in American history when the JAPANESE emperor knew beyond doubt that American retaliation was a given when he utters the words ... "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant."
God Bless America!

Pearl Harbor Attack Remembered at 70th Anniversary
Published December 07, 2011
PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii – About 120 survivors of the Dec. 7, 1941, bombing of Pearl Harbor observed a moment of silence to commemorate the JAPANESE attack and the thousands who lost their lives that day 70 years ago Wednesday.
The moment of silence came just before 8 a.m. local time, when the first JAPANESE planes launched their attack. The survivors were joined by Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, military leaders and civilians at a ceremony in Pearl Harbor.

Aging survivors mark Pearl Harbor 70th anniversary
December 7, 2011
With a light rain falling, speakers remembered those killed or wounded seven decades ago as well as survivors who fought in World War Two following the Japanese air and naval assault on December 7, 1941, that brought the United States into the war.
"We gather here today to commemorate the 70th anniversary of one of the most significant events of the 20th century," 88-year-old veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor Mal Middlesworth said in a keynote address.
"We do this best by honoring all who gave their lives on all the military bases on the island of Oahu that Sunday, not just Pearl Harbor," said Middlesworth, who was an 18-year-old Marine serving on the USS San Francisco that morning.
The attack killed nearly 2,400 people, wounded 1,178 others, sank or heavily damaged a dozen U.S. warships and destroyed 323 aircraft, badly crippling the Pacific fleet.
