Virginia Tech Gunman Dead After Killing Officer, Source Says
Published December 08, 2011

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech says there is no longer a threat on campus and normal activities can resume after two people, including a police officer, were shot and killed on Virginia Tech’s campus Thursday.

While officials would not confirm that the second victim in the shooting was in fact the gunman, a law enforcement source tells Fox News that authorities do believe that the second victim is the gunman, and that he suffered a self-inflicted wound.

Advocates for gun control will be using this incident to advance their cause. It’s coming.

REMINDER

On April 16, 2007 students inside Norris Hall at Virginia Tech who complied with the “no gun” rule of the University were defenseless sitting ducks to ONE who was not a respecter of rules … ONE who was not a respecter of life. What is wrong with this picture.

Police: Va. Tech gunman changed clothes after killing officer; motive still not known
December 9, 2011

BLACKSBURG, Va. — The gunman who walked up to a police car and shot a Virginia Tech officer to death fled to nearby university greenhouses, where he changed clothes. Despite his attempt to throw off a police manhunt, a patrolling sheriff’s deputy spotted him and the gunman killed himself.

Investigators still don’t know of any connections between the gunman, whom they haven’t named, and university police officer Deriek W. Crouse, 39. The trained firearms and defense instructor with a specialty in crisis intervention had pulled over a driver for a traffic violation when he was killed. There was no link between the driver and the gunman.

Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said investigators are confident they know the shooter’s identity, but they are waiting for final confirmation from a medical examiner before they release it. They know he wasn’t a student, but they don’t why he targeted Crouse.

“That’s very much the fundamental part of the investigation right now,” Geller said at a news conference.

It’s likely the shooter was the same man who stole a rental car at gunpoint earlier Thursday in Radford, about 15 miles from Blacksburg, Geller said.

Virginia Tech shooting: how university helped avoid another massacre
The Virginia Tech shooting showed that the university has learned important lessons since the 2007 massacre. Virginia Tech quickly sent alerts campuswide via Twitter, e-mail, and text.

This undated photo shows Ross Truett Ashley, 22, who Virginia State Police have identified as the gunman who killed a Virginia Tech police officer as well as himself in a Dec. 8, 2011 shooting.

BLACKSBURG, Va. –  A part-time college student at a small school near Virginia Tech was identified Friday as the gunman who shot a police officer to death and then killed himself, triggering a lockdown on a campus still coping with the nation's worst mass slaying in recent memory.

The day before the shootings, police said Ross Truett Ashley, 22, stole a sport utility vehicle at gunpoint from a real estate office in Radford. He dumped the car on the Virginia Tech campus and it was found Thursday.

Authorities have not been able to say what led Ashley to kill a police officer he did not know at a school he had never attended.

Virginia Tech shooting: Gunman Ross Truett Ashley’s family apologizes to slain cop’s family
Gunman's family asks for privacy; students rally to raise money, gifts for officer Deriek Crouse's wife and children

December 12, 2011

Virginia Tech/AP
Virginia Tech students have started a program to collect money and Christmas gifts for slain officer Deriek Crouse’s family.

The family of suspected Virginia Tech gunman Ross Truett Ashley has apologized to the family of slain officer Deriek Crouse and asked for privacy while they mourn the tragedy and struggle to determine the motive behind the seemingly unprovoked attack.

"The Ashley family would like to offer their condolences to the family of Officer Crouse," they said in a statement to The Associated Press. "Officer Crouse and his family are in their prayers."
 ::snipping2::
Crouse, 39, joined the university police force in 2007 -- some six months after a campus-wide shooting rampage that left 33 dead -- and was married with five children between the ages of 10 and 18.

Students at the school have started a program called "Hokies for Crouse" to raise money for his family and collect gifts and gift cards for his children, the News Leader newspaper reported.

The school planned to hold a memorial to honor Crouse on Monday.
