The article says this has come to light because the news reports about the Penn State child sex abuse case prompted 2 players to independently confront Bobby Dodd. Just what has been going on in sports?

Report: Ex-AAU leader accused of child sex abuse
December 9, 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Two former basketball players have accused ex-Amateur Athletic Union president Robert "Bobby" Dodd of molesting them as children, according to an ESPN report.

The AAU confirmed late Friday that it is investigating the claims, which reportedly date from the 1980s. One of the players, 43-year-old Ralph West, told ESPN's "Outside the Lines" he was assaulted in Memphis in 1984.

Both West and a second unidentified man said news reports about the Penn State child sex abuse case prompted them to independently confront Dodd in November. The player, who spoke to ESPN on the condition of anonymity, said he called Dodd on Nov. 11 and that Dodd apologized for the alleged abuse. ESPN confirmed an eight-minute call to Dodd by examining telephone records.

Memphis police said in a statement that it had been contacted by the AAU and was looking into the allegations.

"The Memphis Police Department takes allegations of child sexual abuse very seriously," Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong said. "Although this case has its challenges due to the amount of time that has passed, it will be thoroughly examined; and if the investigation reveals the law was violated, the person responsible will be held accountable."

AAU Acting President Louis Stout released a statement Friday saying that the 63-year-old Dodd has colon cancer and will not return to his positions as president and executive director..

Stout also confirmed that the organization is conducting its own probe.

"The AAU has recently been made aware of some serious allegations about President Robert W. 'Bobby' Dodd, dating back several decades," the statement said. "The AAU has opened an independent investigation into these matters and also has contacted local law enforcement in Memphis, where the activities allegedly occurred. We will actively cooperate with any and all authorities to determine the facts and the truth."

AAU CEO Bobby Dodd Accused Of Sexual Abuse By Former Players
By Sean Keeley - Contributor
December 9, 2011

Dec 9, 2011 - The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) announced Friday that it has contacted Memphis police after learning from ESPN's "Outside the Lines" that two former players have accused president and chief executive officer Robert "Bobby" Dodd of molested them in the 1980s when they were teenagers.
 ::snipping2::
According to ESPN...

    The players allege a pattern of inappropriate touching of them by Dodd, masturbation by Dodd while they slept in hotel rooms during tournaments, and players younger than 16 being supplied alcohol.

One of the accusers is 43-year-old Ralph West, 43, who showed OTL an email he said he sent to the AAU's compliance department on Nov. 9 about Dodd's alleged behavior.The second accuser has asked to remain anonymous but told OTL that he confronted Dodd about his behavior and that Dodd apologized for the alleged abuse.

The former players allege behavior and actions that occurred between the ages of 12 and 16.

Some of the former NBA players who played under Dodd's Memphis-based AAU teams include William Bedford, Vincent Askew and Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway.
he AAU also released a statement based on the investigation:

Men: AAU ex-CEO sexually abused them
Amateur Athletic Union announces investigation, contacts police about allegations
By Tom Farrey
December 10, 2011

 ::snipping2::
One of the former players making the allegations said Friday night that a Memphis detective had contacted him and said that the AAU had supplied the names of three former players who had alleged abuse to the organization.

Two players told OTL they had contacted the AAU in early November with claims that Dodd had molested them. AAU first vice president Louis Stout, who is the interim president, told OTL on Thursday evening that he was not made aware of the allegations but should have been.

Ralph West, 43, of Miami showed "Outside the Lines" an email he said he sent to the AAU's compliance department on Nov. 9 about Dodd's alleged behavior. In it, West wrote, "Bobby Dodd is a pedophile that assaulted me in Memphis in 1984. I am speaking to a reporter and attorney." West later contacted a reporter for OTL but said he decided not to hire an attorney.

The second former player, who spoke to OTL only on the condition of anonymity, said he called Dodd on Nov. 11 and confronted him about his "sick" behavior and that Dodd apologized for the alleged abuse. OTL verified the 8-minute phone call to Dodd by examining telephone records.
The former players allege behavior and actions that occurred between the ages of 12 and 16 under the supervision of Dodd, a YMCA director in the 1980s who still directs Memphis-based AAU teams that are among the best in the nation. Among the players who have passed through his club over the years are former NBA players William Bedford, Vincent Askew and Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway.

The players alleging molestation said they also saw hundreds of photographs of the clothed backsides and crotches of AAU players in one of Dodd's filing cabinets, and bags filled with dozens of pairs of teenage boys' old underwear with names and dates on them. They said that he had a hair fetish and would keep in envelopes the boys' hair that he had pulled out in impromptu wrestling matches where he would also grope them. They said he often used petroleum jelly to affix hair to the dashboard of his car.

The former player who spoke anonymously also alleges that Dodd drugged him when he was a youth. He also said Dodd offered to pay him $1,000 if he agreed to have oral sex performed on him while he was blindfolded and bound. West spoke about once catching Dodd hiding in the attic of his house, in his underwear, with a video camera after telling players they could use his house to party with their girlfriends because he would be out of town.

Both former players said they had never approached the police with such allegations and only recently shared their accounts with their families.

"Outside the Lines" notified Dodd and his administrative assistant on Thursday afternoon that former players had shared their accounts with ESPN, and OTL requested comment from Dodd, who was still listed on the AAU website Friday as president and CEO. Thursday evening, 15 minutes after OTL attempted to speak with Dodd at his home, his assistant responded with a brief email, stating only that Dodd had cancer and retired from the AAU on Nov. 29 for health reasons.

His departure, and the allegations of sexual abuse, came as news to other top AAU leaders Thursday night.
 ::snipping2::
West and the accuser who requested anonymity, who played at different times for Dodd, said they independently -- and without knowing about the other -- confronted Dodd last month about what they recalled after seeing news reports of the alleged sexual abuse by former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky. The former player who requested anonymity said he was shocked to learn from Dodd in the November telephone call that West had recently contacted Dodd with similar allegations.

West said that no one from the AAU followed up on his Nov. 9 email that he sent to the compliance department alleging that Dodd was a pedophile. He said he sent the note to the AAU because he was concerned that Dodd still had access to children through his Memphis AAU club, and as the head of a national organization that serves more than 500,000 children.

"That's when I said, 'No, this isn't going to happen,'" said West, who added that he reached out to "Outside the Lines" after getting no response from the AAU.

Amateur Athletic Union probes abuse charges against ex leader
December 10, 2011

(Reuters) - The Amateur Athletic Union, one of the nation's largest youth sports groups, said on Saturday it was "shocked and deeply concerned" about allegations of child sex abuse made against former President Robert W. "Bobby" Dodd.

In a statement, acting AAU President Louis Stout said the AAU has become aware of "serious allegations" about Dodd dating back several decades, and it has opened an independent investigation and also contacted local law enforcement in Memphis.

"We have begun an independent internal investigation and review of our protocols, procedures and policies," said Stout. "While we believe our network of programs has significant safeguards in place, we will never be complacent about doing all we can to protect the young people in our programs."

Memphis police said Friday they have opened an investigation into sexual abuse allegations against Dodd.

In an ESPN interview, 2 men who were coached by AAU president Bobby Dodd during the 1980's say they were sexually assaulted by the former coach as children. One claims assaults happened at an East Memphis YMCA.

"He always somehow had a key for the room I was in, that was his MO, coming in in the middle of the night when you are asleep and try to assault you." said Randy West, an alleged victim during an ESPN interview.

Allegations cast doubt on future of YOMCA
Basketball organization's director, Bobby Dodd, accused of sexual assault
By Jason Smith
December 10, 2011

William Anderson, an officer of the Youth of Memphis Competitors Association, said Saturday he doesn't know the future of the non-profit basketball organization in the wake of sexual assault allegations against its director, former Memphian Robert "Bobby" Dodd.

"I don't know that that organization will die," said Anderson, also the LeMoyne-Owen men's basketball coach and athletic director.

Anderson declined further comment except to say that the allegations -- that Dodd molested two former basketball players -- date from the 1980s when Dodd led a Young Men's Christian Association Amateur Athletic Union program in Memphis and before he created the YOMCA.

"It's a totally different entity. A lot of people get it confused because one is YMCA, Young Men's Christian Association, and the other one is the Youth of Memphis Competitors Association," Anderson said. "So it's two different groups."

The allegations, first reported Friday by ESPN's "Outside the Lines," are being investigated by the Memphis Police Department's Sex Crimes Bureau. MPD confirmed the investigation Friday and said Saturday that it had no update on the case.
 ::snipping2::
West and a second unidentified man said news reports about the Penn State child sex abuse case prompted them to independently confront Dodd in November. The player, who spoke to ESPN on the condition of anonymity, said he called Dodd on Nov. 11 and that Dodd apologized for the alleged abuse.

DuJuan Taylor, YOMCA program director, predicted the organization's demise in the wake of the allegations against Dodd.

Asked if he was still its program director, Taylor said, "It ain't no program. The Y(OMCA), we're going to dissolve that. I will start a different program possibly."

Taylor said Dodd wasn't around the YOMCA team much.

Tenn. youth sports official accused of sexual abuse
December 10, 2011

MEMPHIS, Tennessee — The Memphis police and the Amateur Athletic Union have launched separate investigations after two former basketball players alleged that the leader of a youth sports organization molested them during the 1980s when they were boys.
 ::snipping2::
The athletic union, one of the largest amateur sports organizations in the United States, released a statement noting that the alleged incidents would have occurred decades ago.

"The AAU has opened an independent investigation into these matters and also has contacted local law enforcement in Memphis, where the activities allegedly occurred," the statement said. "We will actively cooperate with any and all authorities to determine the facts and the truth."

Dodd has been diagnosed with colon cancer and will not return as president and chief executive officer of the youth organization, the statement said.

Louis Stout, who replaces Dodd as acting AAU president, said the organization has provided the Memphis Police Department "with the limited information we have up to this point" and begun to review such safeguards as screening and training for staff and volunteers.

"While we believe our network of programs has significant safeguards in place, we will never be complacent about doing all we can to protect the young people in our programs," he said.

Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong said, "Although this case has its challenges due to the amount of time that has passed, it will be thoroughly examined; and if the investigation reveals the law was violated, the person responsible will be held accountable."

AAU chief defends handling of sex abuse claims

The head of the Amateur Athletic Union told CNN in an exclusive interview Tuesday that his organization handled matters expeditiously after learning its former director was accused of sexually abusing boys.

"We formed our own internal investigative process, and then once we found out who the accusers were, we immediately went to the police department," AAU President Louis Stout said. "We didn't sit on this. No one has acted improperly within the Amateur Athletic Union regarding these accusations."

Robert "Bobby" Dodd, recently the group's CEO, is accused of sexually abusing boys in the 1980s when he was a YMCA coach based in Memphis, Tennessee.

Keith Johnson, the president and CEO of the YMCA of Memphis and the Mid-South, said he felt “gut-punched” when he heard of the allegations recently.

The allegations against Dodd, 63, arose after anonymous e-mails and phone calls in early November and catapulted into national prominence when two former basketball players told their stories to sports network ESPN's "Outside the Lines."

Possible 3rd victim emerges in allegations against ex-AAU chief
By Barbara Liston
December 14, 2011

(Reuters) - The name of a possible third alleged sex abuse victim of former Amateur Athletic Union president Robert "Bobby" Dodd was uncovered in November by a private investigator, AAU president Louis Stout told reporters in Orlando on Wednesday.

The investigator had been hired by the athletic organization to investigate anonymous allegations received by email and voicemail.

"We had that information (about a third possible victim). We withheld it until we were sure," Stout said.

He said the alleged victim's identity was reported to Memphis Police on December 9, the day the AAU first contacted the police about allegations against Dodd.

Stout provided no details of the third victim or the circumstances surrounding the alleged abuse.
 ::snipping2::
The AAU called a press conference Wednesday at its Orlando headquarters to announce the appointment of two independent task forces to help the organization decide how to better safeguard the half-million children nationwide who participate in AAU activities.

As of now, the organization does not require routine criminal background checks of coaches and adult volunteers or employees, said Henry Forrest, chair of the AAU compliance committee.

Stout said traveling AAU teams staying in hotels, where some of the abuse allegedly occurred, typically have been under the care of their coaches.

All that might change following the work of the task forces, which Stout said he expects will result in "rigorous screening (of coaches and adults working with children) that likely will include background checks."

The YMCA fired Bobby Dodd in 1992 for falsifying expense reports, "(We had all the records to show he had been stealing. It wasn't big dollars, but it was the principle of the thing.") yet, Dodd was elected President of the AAU shortly after that. There's really, really something wrong with this!

http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/7356179/attorney-says-bobby-dodd-former-head-aau-innocent-child-molestation-accusations
Attorney: AAU's Bobby Dodd innocent
December 15, 2011

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Six days after the Amateur Athletic Union severed ties with longtime president and CEO Bobby Dodd due to allegations of child sexual abuse, and Memphis police opened an investigation, an attorney for Dodd responded to the claims made by former players by saying they are false.

Attorney Steve Farese, hired Wednesday by Dodd, spoke Thursday with ESPN.

"It didn't happen," said Farese, a criminal defense lawyer from Ashland, Miss. "All of this is fancy."

Farese told The Associated Press that Dodd is "absolutely" innocent, but is being put in the difficult position of proving a negative.
Farese declined to respond to questions on specific allegations made by two players in an ESPN "Outside the Lines" report last Friday.
 ::snipping2::
The denials by Farese come one day after the AAU held a news conference at its Lake Buena Vista, Fla., headquarters, where AAU leaders promised to rebuild trust in the 113-year-old organization, whose programs and tournaments serve more than 500,000 children.

Two task forces convened by the AAU are to make a series of recommendations on enhancing protections against sexual predators, with potential measures including protocols that prevent coaches from being alone with players on travel tournaments and the adoption of mandatory background checks of coaches and administrators.

Louis Stout, the former first vice president who replaced Dodd, said his 30-year friendship with Dodd had to be put aside when the decision was made Nov. 14 to place Dodd on indefinite leave due to allegations that had been emailed and phoned into AAU offices.

Stout said the AAU later decided not to allow Dodd to return to his positions, and that the organization has ended its relationship with Dodd.

Farese disputed the notion Dodd is no longer in contact with the AAU. "That's not correct," he said.
Asked about that contention, AAU crisis-management consultant Ron Sachs said only treasurer Ron Crawford has been authorized by Stout to communicate with Dodd and his instructions are to limit the conversations to matters related to his severance.

The lawyer also chastised AAU officials for firing Dodd, who had been AAU president since 1992.
 ::snipping2::
He said Dodd will "mount an offensive" designed to counter the allegations that may include media interviews and the solicitation of affidavits by people who can help support his case. Farese said some supporters may be reluctant to come forward, however, "because they don't want to be infected by these salacious allegations."

Dodd is suffering from colon cancer, according to the AAU, which denied his request last month to retire officially for health reasons.

Until Thursday, the only response Dodd had registered to the allegations was to AAU officials in their private meeting with Stout and three other AAU officials on Nov. 14. That was when, according to Sachs, he vehemently denied the claims.
 ::snipping2::
Along with the Memphis police, the AAU and YMCA have launched internal investigations. West alleges that Dodd's sexual abuse started when he tried to touch him in a shower at an East Memphis YMCA in the early 1980s, when Dodd managed the facility.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal on Wednesday quoted Dodd's former boss as saying Dodd was fired from the YMCA in 1992 for falsifying expense reports.

"When I made that change it was for reason, it was for cause," said Jim Havlick, who was local director of the YMCA at the time. "We had all the records to show he had been stealing. It wasn't big dollars, but it was the principle of the thing."

Dodd was elected AAU president shortly after that, and grew the organization into one of the largest in youth sports.

Memphis attorney Steve Farese talks allegations against Bobby Dodd
By Janice Broach
December 23, 2011

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Memphis attorney Steve Farese has been hired by Bobby Dodd, the former Amateur Athletic Union president, to defend him against allegations of sexual abuse.

"He's embarrassed to go out in public," said Farese.  "He feels like people are talking about him when they may not be."

Dodd is accused of sexually assaulting two boys in the 1980's when they were between the ages of 12 and 16.  They said it happened while Dodd was the director of the YMCA in Memphis.
