New shows nabbed most Golden Globes TV nominations
By Bill Keveney, USA TODAY
December 15, 2011

 ::snipping2::
First-year series garnered seven of 10 nominations for best drama series (four) and comedy/musical series (three), although last year's drama and comedy winners, HBO's Boardwalk Empire and Fox's Glee, respectively, once again will return as nominees.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which picks the nominees and winners, has long had an affinity for fresh fare.
Newness didn't hurt Showtime's first-season Homeland, which received nominations for drama series, best actress (Claire Danes) and best actor (Damian Lewis). Danes was a winner last year for HBO's Temple Grandin.

"The excitement has ratcheted up with each passing week, because people have been embracing the show more. I was never expecting anything for myself, but given the celebration around the show, I would have been surprised if the show wasn't somehow recognized. I'm thrilled and excited," Lewis said.

Overall, cable TV stole the show again, taking 38 nominations to broadcast's 17. HBO dominated the nominations, hauling in 18, followed by Showtime, with eight. On the broadcast side, PBS led the way with five, followed by ABC (four), Fox and NBC (three each) and CBS (two).

PBS's Downton Abbey and HBO's Mildred Pierce scored four nominations each, the most for any TV series, miniseries or movie.

Basic and premium cable productions swept the best-drama and dramatic-actor categories, with Homeland, Boardwalk Empire and Starz's Boss recognized in both categories.

Cable's performance mirrored last year's, where four of the five best drama nominations went to cable productions. Bryan Cranston, nominated for dramatic actor for AMC's Breaking Bad, said cable shows often have "a lot of leeway" in content and time structure, which can help from a dramatic perspective.

Broadcast TV showed life in the comedy categories, taking three of five nominations for the comedy series and best-actress categories and two of five for best actor.

Golden Globes Shocks And Snubs: Ryan Gosling, 'Dragon Tattoo,' More
Nominations overlook 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,' 'Breaking Bad' and 'Bridesmaids' breakout Melissa McCarthy.

The 2012 Golden Globes nominations are here, and as always, there are plenty of surprises of both the good and bad variety. Some of our favorite actors walked away with unexpected nominations, while others were shockingly left off the ballot. Movies we did not anticipate making the cut broke past our expectations, while several films we considered shoe-ins were shut out entirely. In other words, it's just another year at the Globes!

From Ryan Gosling to "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," here are 10 of the biggest shocks and snubs among this year's Golden Globes nominees: (see list at link)
