Heisman Trophy finalists announced
December 5, 2011
The 2011 Heisman Trophy invitees were announced Monday evening live on ESPN, and Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck headlines the five players who got the call to New York City.
Luck will be joined in the Big Apple on Saturday by Wisconsin running back Montee Ball, Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, LSU defensive back and special team ace Tyrann Mathieu and Alabama running back Trent Richardson.
Former Ohio State running back and 1995 Heisman winner Eddie George made the announcement.
The Heisman Trophy will be awarded for the 77th time Saturday night in New York.

Luck, Griffin, Richardson, Mathieu and Ball are Heisman Trophy finalists
December 5, 2011
NEW YORK — Andrew Luck entered the season as the overwhelming favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.
The Stanford quarterback will head to New York for the presentation of college football’s most famous player of the year award having relinquished that status.
Luck, along with Robert Griffin III, Trent Richardson, Tyrann Mathieu and Montee Ball are the Heisman finalists. The group, announced Monday on ESPN, will be in New York for the presentation Saturday night.
It’s a return trip for Luck, the only repeat finalist this season, while the other QB on the list, Griffin, is the first Baylor player to get an invite to the ceremony. The school has never had a player finish better than fourth in the Heisman voting, but now it appears to have a front-runner.
Richardson is the second Alabama running back to be a finalist in the past three years. Former teammate Mark Ingram won the Heisman in 2009.
Ball has scored 38 touchdowns for Wisconsin and needs one more to match Barry Sanders’ NCAA record.
Mathieu, the LSU defensive back nicknamed “Honey Badger,” has made numerous game-changing plays for the top-ranked Tigers.
The field was deep this season and several deserving players didn’t make the cut. Most notable, Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore, a finalist last season, Southern California quarterback Matt Barkley and Houston’s record-breaking passer, Case Keenum, did not receive enough votes to be among the final five.
Ballots from the 926 voters, mostly media members and former winners, were due Monday evening.
Luck was the Heisman runner-up to Auburn’s Cam Newton last year and passed up a chance to be the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft to return to Stanford for his junior season. From the moment he made the decision to stay in school in January, he became the odds-on favorite to win the big bronze statue this season.

Updated: Robert Griffin III wins 77th Heisman Trophy
December 10, 2011
Although Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck was the Heisman Trophy favorite in both the preseason and throughout much of the 2011 regular season, the Heisman race hadn’t been this wide open in years.
There was a pool of about 7-8 players would all could make a case as to why they deserved to be invited to New York for the Heisman ceremony, but it came down to five: Luck, Robert Griffin III, Montee Ball, Trent Richardson and Tyrann Matheiu.
In the end, though, the 77th Heisman Trophy was awarded to Robert Griffin III.
RGIII grabbed 405 of 846 first-place votes and 1,687 points to take home the trophy; Luck had 247 first place points and 1,407 points; Richardson received 138 first place votes and 978 points. Ball and Matheiu finished fourth and fifth in the voting, respectively.
“This is unbelievably believable,” Griffin III said in his acceptance speech. “To Baylor nation, I say this is a forever moment, may we be blessed enough to have more of these in the future.”
Griffin won 5 of 6 voting regions, with the exception being the Far West region, which was won by Luck. However, votes for Boise State’s Kellen Moore and USC’s Matt Barkley cut into Luck’s voting — perhaps just enough to keep last year’s runner-up in the same spot this year.

Baylor's Griffin wins Heisman Trophy
December 10, 2011
In this handout provided by the Heisman Trophy Trust, Robert Griffin III of the Baylor Bears poses with the trophy.
New York (CNN) -- Baylor University quarterback Robert Griffin III, who has amassed nearly 4,000 passing yards this season, won the 2011 Heisman Trophy on Saturday.
Griffin bested a field of finalists that included Wisconsin running back Montee Ball, Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, Louisiana State cornerback Tyrann Mathieu and Alabama running back Trent Richardson.
Griffin, a junior, has passed for 3,998 yards this year and accounted for 45 touchdowns (36 passing, nine rushing). He has completed 267 of 369 passing attempts.
Griffin is the first Baylor player to receive the honor for the most outstanding player in college football. He received 405 first-place votes and 1,687 total points.
