Portland man disappears in Mexico, but family can't find anyone to locate him
Published: Sunday, December 18, 2011, 6:00 PM

Daniel Zavala left Portland for Mexico in spring 2010, chasing a dream of returning with his wife Gloria and their three children to the country where he was born and raised.

The Zavalas communicated almost daily while Daniel, 44, worked to set up a seafood restaurant with his two brothers. The couple, both naturalized U.S. citizens, chatted on the Internet or talked by phone. Daniel would fill Gloria in on the fledgling business and Monclova, a bustling city in the border state of Coahuila. She would tell him about work, their North Portland home and their children, Dennise, 21, Daniel Jr., 13, and Heidi, 12.

Then there was silence.
