Search continues for missing White Fox man

CTV Saskatoon

Date: Monday Nov. 14, 2011 6:23 AM CST

The search continues for a missing 71-year-old Saskatchewan man.

James Gallagher, from White Fox, near Nipawin, was last seen driving his 2004 red Ford Ranger eight days ago towards Flin Flon, Manitoba. The RCMP search for him has gone cold, and his family is now reaching out to the public for help.

Marlene Morrissey, Gallagher's sister, says the family is still searching. "It is very frightening because he may not be getting help anymore, or he may have gotten too weak, or gone to sleep in the truck."

Gallagher has a severe speech impediment, he can't read, and has trouble communicating. His family says on November 1, he gave a man a ride to the nearby community of Melfort. They believe somewhere along the way he got lost. Since then he has been sighted as far away as Thompson, Manitoba, over 800 kilometres east of Melfort.

He was last seen near Flin Flon on November 4. He has paid for gas a couple times with checks, but his family believes he may not be getting the help he needs.

"We're thinking that people are staying away from him, and we just think that he is so afraid," says Morrissey.

SASKATOON -- RCMP say a White Fox man last seen in Melfort last week has since been spotted several times in Manitoba dishevelled and looking for directions home.

James (Jim) Joseph Gallagher, 71, was last seen Nov. 1 in Melfort when an RCMP officer stopped him, suspecting an impaired driver. He was released without charge.

His family reported him missing Friday after he failed to show up in White Fox, which is 270 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.

Nipawin RCMP Staff Sgt. Barry Thomas said Gallagher was spotted Nov. 2 in Mafeking, Man., 250 kilometres east, where a passerby helped him change a tire on his red 2004 Ford Ranger pickup truck with Sask. licence plate 596 GMT.

It seems I've seen  more and more cases of elderly men and women disappearing, often times in their cars.  Some that come to mind are Lillian High, Earl Lee Davis and Richard Parker.  Both Ms. High and Mr. Davis are still missing as are their vehicles.  Mr. Parker's truck was found, but he is still missing.  There are so many missing person's cases, it would be impossible to have them all here.  I read news online in many different areas, and I come across elderly persons missing.

NIPAWIN JOURNAL - The family of James Gallagher, 71, is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to his return.

Gallagher has been missing since Nov. 4.

The police were tracking his where abouts as he cashed some cheques but there has been no activity through his bank account since Nov. 6.

A meeting was held in the Love hall week to organize a search team to head out in the directions they think he might be.

Monday morning volunteers from White Fox, Love and Garrick all pitched in to help out.

Around eight vehicles met in the morning with two people to a car. When a vehicle went into one road they would mark it with a flag and then mark it with a flag when they came back out to let the other driver's know that road had been searched.

The search started at Hanson Lake Road and went all the way up to Flin Flon.

On Tuesday, the Flin Flon Knight's of Columbus helped with an organized search in their area.

There have not been any more sightings or reportings of cheque cashings since Nov. 6, around 4:30 a.m., where Gallagher was sighted on a road by Creighton asking a truck driver diretcions on how to get back to White Fox. ::snipping2::

Just wanted to mention that this area is not in the immediate area last seen. I am not sure of the exact distance but it looks to be at least 600 miles.

The family of a White Fox man missing for more than six months is grateful a sharp RCMP officer followed a clue that led to the discovery of his body.

::snipping2::

On Wednesday, RCMP confirmed a body found in a submerged truck in northern Saskatchewan is that of James Gallagher, 71, who had been missing since early November.

RIP James, you can go home now.
