Fort Smith police looking for missing 24-year-old

Fort Smith police are looking for a 24-year-old woman who disappeared after she said she was going to a party in Alma on Dec. 30.

Police say they don't yet know whether Cassie Leigh Cotta ever showed up at the party. Police say Cotta's mother said her daughter was intoxicated when she disappeared. According to police, Cotta left her car at her home and never reported to work the next day at Perry's Place Bar in Fort Smith.

Friends and family have posted an online video and fliers on Cotta's Facebook page in hopes of locating the woman. Cotta is described as standing 5 foot 3 inches tall with a petite build. She has gauged ear piercings and numerous tattoos.

Fort Smith Woman Reported Missing

Alicia Agent 5NEWS Web Producer

4:14 p.m. CST, January 2, 2012

Fort Smith, Ark. – Cassie Cotta, 24, was last seen headed to a party in Alma with a man named Brandon Friday night, according to police. When she failed to show up for her New Year’s Eve shift at a Perry’s Place, a bar on N. 6th, her worried mother reported her missing.

Cpl. Stephen Dooly says Cotta's husband Brent was the last known person to speak with her.  Witnesses reported hearing gunshots in the neighborhood on Johnson Street where she was last seen, however, Cpl. Dooly tells 5NEWS witnesses say it’s common for that area.

The woman’s mother, Pearl Cook, tells 5NEWS that police have heard several stories from Cotta's friends and witnesses. Cook now believes her daughter was not going to a party that night. She says Cotta had been drinking and worries something may have happened to her. Cook says Cotta sent a text to a friend at 11 p.m. that night but 'it didn't make sense.'

Alicia Agent 5NEWS Web Producer

5:51 p.m. CST, January 3, 2012

The body of Cassie Cotta, 24, was found in rural Crawford County Tuesday afternoon, according to Sgt. Daniel Grubbs with the Fort Smith Police Department.

Cotta's husband, Brent Cotta, is in custody and charges are pending, according to police.

With the help of Brent, deputies with the Crawford and Sebastian County Sheriff's Offices found Cotta’s body about 50 to 60 feet off of Gun Club Road in Crawford County around 3:30 p.m., Cpt. Jarrard Copeland says.

"We called him in today and confronted him with some of the discrepancies that we found and ultimately we were led to the body out here," Cpt. Copeland says.

Investigators also searched the couple’s home and vehicle. Sgt. Grubbs says evidence found there lead them to the location in Crawford County. He would not say what the evidence was. ::snipping2::

Cotta Arraigned; Bond Set At Half-Million
Affidavit: Husband Confessed To Slaying

January 4, 2012

The husband accused of first-degree murder in the death of his wife pleaded not guilty Wednesday morning in Sebastian County Circuit Court.

Brent Dan Cotta, 33, of Fort Smith was arraigned via video from the Sebastian County Adult Detention Center.

According to an affidavit for probable cause, Cotta admitted killing his wife 24-year-old Cassie Cotta.

Cotta was arrested Tuesday night after the body of Cassie Cotta. was found near Gun Club Road in rural Crawford County. Cassie Cotta had been missing since Friday night.

Circuit Court Judge Michael Fitzhugh set Cotta’s bond at a $500,000, cash only.

Cassie Cotta’s body has been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory for an autopsy, but there were no signs of “obvious trauma” on her body, Fort Smith police Sgt. Daniel Grubbs previously said.

Fort Smith police Jarrard Copeland said Tuesday night that officers “feel confident that we have the person responsible for her death in custody.”
