Mother of missing child arrested, charged with unlawful conduct
Posted: Dec 31, 2011 9:51 AM PST Updated: Dec 31, 2011 11:08 AM PST

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The mother of a missing child has been arrested and charged unlawful conduct towards a child after police say she gave false and inconsistent information to investigators on the child's whereabouts.

Authorities say 18-month-old Amir Jennings was last seen by his family members during the Thanksgiving holiday.

The mother, 22-year-old Zinah Demaris Jennings, is currently at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center following a hearing where bond was set at $150,000 surety.

Initially, police say, Zinah's family members were worried that Zinah and the child had gone missing after being unable to get in touch with the pair earlier in December. A missing persons report was then filed on both Amir and Zinah.

On Christmas Eve, according to police, Zinah was involved in a car crash on Millwood Avenue. The responding officer found Zinah in the missing persons directory and immediately asked her about her son.

Investigators say Zinah gave false and inconsistent information to the officer.

Amir remains missing and police are looking for any leads that might help them locate the child.

Missing child's mother once said she had no child
Posted: Jan 04, 2012 3:04 PM PST Updated: Jan 04, 2012 6:25 PM PST

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott says they're still getting very little help from the mother of a missing toddler about that child's whereabouts.

Scott says that started the night police say they caught up with Zinah Jennings. At one point, Zinah told Columbia police she didn't even have a child.

Police say this is definitely not typical behavior for a mother.

"I don't like the way this case is going," said Scott. "I'm staying optimistic, but right now, we're not getting any information, anything concrete that is telling us that Amir's safe and the last location that Amir is at and who he is with."

Zinah faced a judge Saturday with her family by her side.

Her mother, Jocelyn, filed a missing persons report Dec. 8 after seeing her daughter and getting no answers as to where her grandson was.

"Zinah was not necessarily reported as missing," said Jocelyn, "It was the child that I was concerned with because I had actually seen her the night before."

Agencies from Georgia, South Carolina search for missing child

Boy last seen around Thanksgiving in Atlanta

ATLANTA —

Authorities in South Carolina said they are growing more and more concerned about the whereabouts of an 18-month-old boy last seen around Thanksgiving in the Atlanta area.

Amir Jennings and mother, Zinah Jennings, disappeared with the toddler, police said. She was found after she was involved in a minor car accident in Columbia, S.C., on Christmas Eve.

Authorities said she is giving conflicting stories about where her son might be. Columbia police have charged her with cruelty to children as they continue the search for the child.

"She is still giving us inconsistent stories, and that is unfortunate. Our main concern is the whereabouts and the safety of this child right now and that we just really don't have any idea," Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott said. "She said at one hand the baby was in Atlanta, and another hand the baby was in Charlotte. We are researching both of those ideas. This is a child, so I didn't want to take anything to chance."

Police on Missing Toddler: 'We Have Not Ruled Out Foul Play'

Quote
"Right now we have not ruled out foul play, but obviously we don't know where Amir is and we are not getting any solid answers... I am very concerned about his safety at this point," said Chief Scott.

Lack of communication, coordination slow search for missing toddler

Quote
A spokesperson for the Atlanta Police Department conceded they are not actively searching for 18-month-old Amir Jennings because they have yet to be contacted by the Columbia, S.C. Police Department who is leading the investigation into the toddler's disappearance.

Point #1 - Where do they start looking exactly?  Atl is not a small area to just start searching.
Point #2 - If the FBI is running point in Atl, what can the APD possibility do that FBI can't?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2082360/Zinah-Jennings-wont-tell-police-missing-18-month-old-son-Amir-is.html

Mother making 'cryptic calls to family members about her depression' won't tell police where her 18-month-old son is after he's been missing more than a month

Quote
That sort of behaviour wasn't unusual for the young mother, according to relatives, who told investigators the one-time college student had begun disappearing for days on end, with her son, since his birth.

That doesn't sound like depression, that sounds like drug use.

Missing child's mother once said she had no child

Quote
"During an interview with her, when I mentioned she would be going to jail, she said, 'That's the place I need to be,'" said Scott.

As for what that cryptic statement means for Amir, Scott says police still haven't pieced everything together.

The FBI in Atlanta is tracking Zinah's life for the past six weeks. Investigators are going through bank records and digging through weeks of security camera footage in hopes to put a timeline together, or at least a place to start looking for Amir.

Not looking good at all, imo.

If you watch the video, her mother is speaking to the judge.  She seems like a really nice lady just worried about her grandchild.

I saw that registry.  Not sure if it's real or a feed off of search engines.

SC police in Atlanta tracking down leads in missing toddler case

Quote
Investigators said they have used cadaver dogs when they executed search warrants at the family's home in Columbia and on Jennings's car.

Investigators said they have discovered possible leads, but won't go into detail.

FBI agents at the Atlanta region headquarters told Thomas they are working on "good leads" both in Atlanta and in the Augusta area.

Jennings' relatives had said they would release a statement at some point Thursday but did not, and police said they weren't able to get a hold of them, either.

hmmm...strange.  These folks seemed pretty eager to find the child.  Now even LE can't get in touch with them????
