Police search for remains near Monroe County airport based on information from William Clyde Gibson

Investigators are searching for human remains near the Monroe County Airport based on information supplied by murder suspect William Clyde Gibson III, police officials said Friday.

Police investigating the New Albany man have “ given us information that there might be human remains up here,” said Sgt. Brad Swain of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. “And we’re just giving it a good faith effort to try and find if this guy is providing an accurate statement.”

Swain said a cornfield adjacent to the Monroe airport began Thursday and continued Friday. “We’re doing some probing into the soil and taking soil samples” along with using cadaver dogs to determine whether digging is necessary, he said.

Bloomington man says investigators might search his property in Gibson case

BLOOMINGTON, IN (WAVE) – William Clyde Gibson's house has been cleared as a crime scene on Woodbourne Drive in New Albany, and now efforts have shifted to track down new leads more than one hundred miles away.

For Ryan Stringer, it was quite a shock, when a Monroe County detective showed up at his door on Thursday.

"He had told me that there had been the possibility of a body buried somewhere on our property," said Stringer.

Stringer lives on a farm on Airport Road and he signed a warrant allowing law enforcement to search his property in the future.

"He said that a suspect that they caught had told them and described our barn and the small out building, we have in the field there," said Stringer.

Gibson is a suspected serial killer, already linked to three dead women. On Thursday, sources tell WAVE 3, Gibson was out of jail with investigators in Bloomington.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says the area was being prepped for a possible future dig.

They also say that a tip led New Albany Police to a secluded area, in search of a woman's remains.

"We've been here for eight years and he said it would have been done about two years ago," said Stringer.

New Albany, NY (WAVE/CNN) - Suspected serial killer William Clyde Gibson has now been charged with three counts of murder.

Prosecutors to seek death penalty against accused serial killer

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- "...if these two cases are not candidates for the death penalty, then I don't think any case would be."

That was prosecutor Keith Henderson's comment as he announced he will seek the death penalty against William Clyde Gibson in the cases of two out of three murders he's accused of.

Gibson is accused of killing 75-year-old Christine Whitis, 53-year-old Karen Hodella, and 35-year-old Stephanie Kirk. Kirk's remains were found buried in the backyard of Gibson's New Albany home last month. Gibson wasn't formally charged with Kirk's murder until a court appearance on Wednesday.

Henderson said he is asking for the death penalty in the cases of Whitis and Kirk.

As proceedings began, Gibson was shuffled into the courtroom. He was wearing an orange jumpsuit, wore shackles on his hands and feet, and appeared emotionless.

This reporter counted 12 uniformed law enforcement officers in the room, most of whom were with the Floyd County Sheriff's Office. Two of those officers guarded the front of the courtroom, while one stood directly behind Gibson at all times. The rest lined the back wall.

When asked whether there could be more victims discovered eventually, Henderson said, "I wouldn't rule out that possibility as we move forward."

Accused killer: Tattoo marks date of 1st killing

William Clyde Gibson III reportedly killed a woman on his birthday 10 years ago and then memorialized the slaying with a tattoo on his right arm, according to newly unsealed court recordings.

According to the recordings of testimony in Floyd Superior Court, Gibson fatally stabbed Florida beautician Karen Hodella and had a drawing of a knife tattooed on his arm with the date — 10-10-02.
The recordings of two separate probable-cause hearings reveal other previously undisclosed details about the killings of Hodella, as well as Stephanie Kirk of Charlestown and Christine Whitis of Clarksville, for which Gibson faces the death penalty if convicted.

Records show new details in deaths of 3 Ind. women

 ::snipping2::

Henderson is seeking the death penalty for Gibson in the Kirk and Whitis killings. He said both women were sexually assaulted before their deaths.

Gibson, 54, has been jailed without bond since his arrest.

Court records show Gibson has had a crime-filled adult life, including a 1992 sexual abuse conviction in Kentucky involving an attack on a woman. He was released from a Kentucky prison in 1999 after serving that sentence. Most recently, he served a four-year sentence for auto theft in Indiana and was released from an Indiana prison in 2009, according to state records.

Court records reveal prosecutor's plan to try William Gibson

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Confessing to three murders will not be enough to put accused serial killer William Clyde Gibson to death.

Prosecutor Keith Henderson tells WDRB News he's going to great lengths to make sure that happens:  "General cases, there's talk of whether things can be solved or offers made, but in a capital case that will not be the case. We are preparing for trial."

Gibson could face separate trials for each of the three alleged victims. Habitual offender charges could pile up an extra 30 years, in essence making it life behind bars.  It's all uncovered in audio and court records just released by the judge.  Henderson says, "We look forward to that methodical preparation and getting things in line to ultimately get to a trial."

 ::snipping2::

Gibson's record shows ten felony convictions over 20 years.  Those include a sexual assault conviction in Louisville, theft charges in Floyd County, and similar charges in both Clark and Floyd counties.

"We've dealt with our share of appeals here," Henderson says, "and we want to do everything we can to have a clean record here and to seek a conviction, and if we do get a conviction, that that's upheld."

Gibson's first trial is set for August 27th
