Mystery surrounds disappearance of Virginia college student on trip to New York City

By Cristina Corbin

Published January 11, 2012

The father of a missing Virginia college student is asking for the public's help in finding his son, who disappeared almost two weeks ago while on a trip to New York City.

Ian Burnet, a 22-year-old student on full scholarship at Virginia Commonwealth University, was last heard from on Dec. 30 while touring Manhattan.

"This is not something we'd expect from Ian, to just drop off the map," his father, Mark Burnet, told FoxNews.com by phone from his home in Richmond, Va. "We’re mystified."

Burnet said he last heard from his son when he received a text message from him on Dec. 28. His son left by bus for New York City on Dec. 26 and was staying with friends in a subletted apartment on 139th St. and Riverside Drive.

Map of 139th and Riverside....the area where Ian was supposed to be staying while in NY.
You can take a walk through the area.  I see a bus stop on the corner and some busy streets.  I pray that he is found safe....and soon.

Such a handsome young guy. It makes no sense that we are just hearing about this now from the media, two weeks after the fact.....

Praying for a happy outcome. an angelic monkey

"There has been no activity on Burnet's credit card or bank accounts since his disappearance, according to his father. His cellphone was left at the apartment -- which his father noted was typical of Ian, an Eagle Scout, who he said enjoys running and walking through parks."

I'd like to think that this young man just left, wanted to get away for awhile, etc.  But, unfortunately, that's not generally the case.  The above statement that the cellphone was left, makes me think he probably took a run or walk around and ran into trouble and without a cellphone he couldn't call for help.  But again, if he wanted to "bug out", leaving your cellphone would insure no one could reach you or track you.  So.....he's hoping he's out there somewhere safe.

Police searching for a missing 22-year-old college student from Virginia have tracked his MetroCard to the 145th Street station on the northbound No. 1 line the day he disappeared, law enforcement sources tell NBC New York.

Investigators are pursuing video footage from cameras at the station, in hopes of learning more about what happened to Ian Burnet.

They have also learned that Burnet, of Richmond, Va., has attempted suicide at least three times previously. One of those attempts included drinking alcohol and taking prescription pills.  an angelic monkey

On Wednesday, police searched the boiler room, three empty apartments and an elevator shaft in the building where Burnet had been staying. Such searches are routine in missing persons cases.

No new evidence was found.

Burnet's family has said the boy has no history of drug or alcohol abuse and comes from a loving home. The engineering student is scheduled to graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2013.

Ugh, not good news, cartfly.  Im still hoping he just took off for a mental break, but the suicide attempts are obviously disturbing. Unfortunately, a lot of young people, especially those who have the bar raised high - he was valedictorian of his high school and received a full scholarship and an eagle scout - get overwhelmed in college - so many suicide reports at universities. I do hope they find him safe but previous suicide attempts and no use of cards after hes been missing 2 weeks doesn't look good. Plus that apartment and sub station are a short walk to the water.  Hate to say that.

I agree Festa. Hopefully, he just needed to get away from all of the pressure and regroup. But what disturbs me is that there hasn't been any use on his credit cards.
I can not imagine what his parents are going through right now.

Facebook and Reddit assist search for missing 22-year-old Ian Burnet

CBS) NEW YORK - Friends and family searching for a missing Virginia man are using Facebook and Reddit to track down clues that could help them find 22-year-old Ian Burnet, who has not been seen since Dec. 30 in New York City.

Burnet came to New York the day after Christmas to celebrate the New Year with friends, but he disappeared after leaving the apartment where he was staying, leaving behind his cell phone, wallet, laptop and iPod.

Hundreds of volunteers have been posting flyers across New York City, Richmond and New Kent County, Va.

A Facebook page, which so far has more than 2,000 members, has dozens of photos and organizing documents for those looking to help, including tips for media and government outreach.

New York Maganize reports Burnet's family has also appealed for help on the popular online community Reddit, where Burnet spent most of his internet time.

Burnet's older brother Jamie, also a Reddit user, posted in the "NYC" and "Assistance" sections of the website. He wrote, "His last credit card transactions were for a $20 Metro card on the 30th and a Burger King transaction we believe was on the 31st. For all we know he got out of town somehow...he could be broke and hitchhiking back down the East Coast to Virginia. I don't know."
