Rough seas shut down cruise ship search, salvage efforts
January 29, 2012

GIGLIO, Italy -- Inclement weather on Sunday has shut down search and salvage efforts at the site of the Costa Concordia cruise ship wreck off the island of Giglio near the Tuscan coast.

The ship shifted more than one inch overnight, and rescue divers were pulled from the water and are waiting for better conditions, NBC News has learned.

On Saturday, divers searching the submerged sixth floor deck found a woman’s body – the 17th body found since the ship ran aground on Jan. 13. Sixteen people are still unaccounted for.
Separately, a body found on the ship’s deck on Jan. 28 was identified as Erika Soria Molina, 25, of Peru. Molina was wearing a service uniform, and studied tourism in Peru and was born in the Andean city of Cuzco, southeast of Lima, the Associated Press reported.

A waitress who guided passengers to safety and gave away her life vest before perishing on the Costa Concordia has been hailed as a hero.

The body of Peruvian woman Erika Fani Soriamolina was identified on Sunday after being found the day before by divers on the sixth deck of the ill-fated Italian cruise ship, CNN reports.

She was wearing the ship's uniform but did not have a life vest.

Witnesses said Soriamolina helped dozens of terrified passengers into lifeboats before giving the vest to an elderly man who survived.

Carnival alters forecast after cruise ship tragedy
By Aaron Smith @CNNMoney
January 30, 2012

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Carnival Corp. reversed its 2012 forecast to a loss Monday, blaming the fatal accident of a cruise ship off the coast of Italy earlier this month.

Carnival is now forecasting a loss, in the range of $375 million to $395 million, for the full year 2012. The company said that's equal to a loss of 48 to 51 cents in fully diluted earnings per share.

The revised forecast reverses one from December that expected Carnival's earnings for the full year would be in the range of $2.55 to $2.85 per share.

The turnaround is the result of the accident on Jan. 13 of the Costa Concordia, which ran aground off the coast of Isola del Giglio, Italy. The ship was severely damaged and capsized in the shallow waters. Seventeen people died in the crash, according to the latest death toll.

A very, very sad day for the family and friends of the missing.  Edit to add in the next article I've posted, it's explained the searches have been called off for the submerged areas, but searches will continue  "in other sections of the half-submerged ship and in waters up to 18 square kilometers around the vessel, where a number of objects have been spotted which investigators believe could turn out to be bodies."  Link to Reuters article in my next post:  http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/01/31/us-italy-ship-idUSTRE80U0YC20120131

Rescuers permanently call off search for bodies on Costa Concordia
January 31, 2012

GIGLIO, Italy -- Italian rescuers Tuesday permanently called off the search for bodies in the stricken Costa Concordia cruise ship, after conditions inside the semi-submerged vessel became too dangerous for the divers.

"We have definitively stopped the underwater search inside the ship," a spokesman for the fire brigade on the island of Giglio was quoted as saying by AFP, citing the difficult conditions.
Italy's ANSA news agency also reported that the search operation came to an end.

A total of 17 bodies were recovered, and 15 people remain missing.

It appears there will still be some searching continuing, just not in the submerged portions of the ship.

Italian authorities end search for cruise ship bodies
January 30, 3012

(Reuters) - Italian authorities have ended the search for bodies on the submerged sections of the capsized Costa Concordia, more than two weeks after the giant cruise liner capsized off the Tuscan coast, officials said on Tuesday.

A statement from the civil protection authority said conditions on the wreck had made it impossible for divers to continue working safely in the underwater sections of the 290-metre long vessel.

It said the decision had been finalized after the families of the 15 people still unaccounted for had been informed.
 ::snipping2::
The search will continue in other sections of the half-submerged ship and in waters up to 18 square kilometers around the vessel, where a number of objects have been spotted which investigators believe could turn out to be bodies.

Yours for just $900! Casino token among macabre Costa Concordia souvenirs up for auction on eBay
January 31, 2012

Costa Concordia passengers are trying to cash in on the disaster by auctioning items from the doomed cruise liner on eBay.

Bidding for a one euro casino token, pictured alongside a cabin key to prove its authenticity, are being taken from a starting point of $900 (£573.94).

U.S. user gkaac, from Brighton, Massachusetts, is also offering buyers the chance to purchase the 'genuine' object for $1,800 (£1,147.89).

Bidding ends on February 6 and, although hundreds have looked at the multi-coloured item, an offer has not yet been submitted.

A model of the ship is also being sold by German user manlux1, from Heidelberg, for $199 (£126.91) and several members are trying to sell postcards of the ship in its heyday.

News of the auctions come as it was revealed by the ship's doctor that Captain Coward Francesco Schettino changed out of his uniform, grabbed his laptop and then abandoned the stricken cruise liner as hundreds of passengers and crew were still onboard.

Lt Gianluca Marino Cosentino's recollection of events backed up prosecution claims the skipper saved his own skin, fled the holed ship and left those remaining onboard to their own fate, almost four hours before the last person was safely rescued.

The medic's story came as officials in charge of the rescue operation announced that they would no longer be searching the submerged sections of the Concordia for the bodies of 15 people still missing, among them a five-year-old girl and her father.

Oil spreading from Italy shipwreck
February 1, 2012

GIGLIO, Italy (AP) – A thin film of oil spread from the Costa Concordia cruise ship as waves battered its wreckage off Italy's coast Wednesday, adding to fears of an environmental disaster in the area's sensitive, pristine waters. Authorities were trying to assess how serious and extensive the spread was
.
Italian authorities also identified a German woman, Siglinde Stumpf, as being among those killed in the Jan. 13 capsizing of the vessel. Stumpf is the 17th person whose body has been identified. Fifteen others are listed as missing.
 ::snipping2::
A crack also appeared Wednesday between two large glass panels that formed part of the roof of the massive ship. The film of oil was spreading from a separate part of the ship, apparently the stern.
 ::snipping2::
Floating barriers placed around the ship to protect the water were lifted by winds Wednesday, allowing oils from the engine to spread throughout the bay.

Hopefully, the cruise line will be Johnny on the spot about this oil leaking.  It seems that it should be able to be contained, unlike the forever flowing of the BP spill in the gulf.

Sometimes a community might have to take matters into their own hands, like many did on the gulf coast.  Hopefully not-

Prayers to all those affected by this horrible tragedy.

Manrico Giampedroni, the ship's purser, leaves the Grosseto hospital in Italy Photo: AP

Manrico Giampedroni spent 36 hours partly submerged in the water with a broken leg after slipping and falling down a hatchway while trying to help passengers escape.

He said he began to suffer from hypothermia and alerted rescuers to his presence in the bowels of the ship by banging a saucepan against the wall.

Mr Giampedroni, 56, the ship's purser, was the last person to be found alive on the giant liner, which smashed into rocks off the Tuscan island of Giglio on the night of Jan 13.

He was located by Italian divers and winched aboard a helicopter, which flew him straight to hospital in Grosseto on the mainland.

Speaking after being released from hospital on Wednesday, he said he was helping dozens of passengers evacuate the listing ship when he slipped and fell about 20ft through a doorway, landing in a flooded restaurant area and breaking his left leg in two places.
He said he found himself trapped in a jumbled heap of tables and chairs.

He climbed onto a table, above the water line, and had to balance on his good leg "like a flamingo".

"I managed to find a panino and a Coca-Cola that were floating in the water. I grabbed them, so I had something to eat at least. I also sipped from a bottle of Cognac, for the first time in my life."

Through the windows of the ship he saw the sun come up on the morning of Sat 14 Jan, the day after the disaster, and then the sunset a few hours later.

"I used a saucepan to make a noise to attract rescuers. Through a window I could see all the emergency vessels around the ship and I tried to shout out. There were moments in which I felt desperate."

Concordia leak is not heavy fuel oil, salvager says

According to a spokesman for Boskalis, parent company of SMIT, which has the contract to remove some 2,400 tons of heavy fuel oil from the beached cruise ship: ‘It is apparently a light film of hydraulic fuel that might have come from the lifeboat winches or the engine room. Thankfully, it is not heavy fuel oil that is leaking out.’

I hope the losses in the Costa Concordia weren't all for nothing.  There are valuable  lessons to be learned.  I would like to see this studied and some across the board changes made in safety for the passengers and crews. It's sad that sometimes it takes something like the Concordia grounding for some to realize changes must be made.  But I believe this is being taken seriously and if changes can be made and are implemented in a consistent fashion, it will be better for the passengers and crews and for the cruise industry overall.

I know two couples that are going on a cruise this month that got MAJOR discounts with Carnival.  Seems the company is going all out to keep customers.  Neither couple has ever gone on a cruise before.
