Pompano company to refloat capsized Costa Concordia
By Mike Clary, Sun Sentinel
April 23, 2012

 ::snipping2::
Costa Cruises, which is owned by Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines, said in a statement that the contract went to Titan after a review of six qualified bids "of a very high standard."

Among other companies submitting bids was Fort Lauderdale's Resolve Marine Group.

Joseph Farrell, Resolve's founder and CEO, said in a news release Sunday, "Rolling and refloating the ship in one piece rather than dismantling it piece-by-piece will be quite a feat. The main concern will be to not further compromise the ship's structural integrity, so that it can be maneuvered off the coast and to another port."

The plan calls for Titan Salvage, working with the Italian company Micoperi, to refloat the ship, and then tow it to an Italian port.

The job is expected to take about a year, the company said.
 ::snipping2::
Among the objectives stated by Costa when the contract was put out for bid were removal of the wreck in one piece, minimal risk and minimal environmental impact, the company said.

Costa said environmental protection will be a "top priority" during the ship's removal. The island of Giglio is in fishing grounds and a dolphin sanctuary.

Once the main work is complete, the sea bottom will be cleaned and marine flora replanted, according to the company.

Costa Cruises CEO to retire, Carnival says

The chief executive officer of Costa Cruises, set to retire in July, will be replaced by the president of Germany-based AIDA Cruises. Both are owned by Carnival Corp.

By Hannah Sampson
hsampson@MiamiHerald.com

After a disastrous start to the year, the head of Costa Cruises will retire on July 1, parent company Carnival Corp. announced Monday.

Pier Luigi Foschi’s exit from the CEO job is unrelated to the fatal crash of the Costa Concordia in January, according to Carnival spokeswoman Jennifer de la Cruz, who said he had been in talks about the retirement for more than a year.

“Pier has made it known for some time that he intended to retire once he turned 65 and today’s announcement is part of our longtime succession plan that allows us to tap into our talented management team to find qualified individuals to oversee our brands,” said Carnival Corp. Chairman and CEO Micky Arison in a statement.

Michael Thamm, who is president of Carnival Corp.’s German cruise operator AIDA Cruises, will move to Genoa, Italy and replace Foschi as CEO of the Costa group. That includes Costa Cruises, AIDA Cruises and the Spanish Ibero Cruises line.

Gianni Onorato will continue to serve as president of Costa Cruises. Michael Ungerer, a longtime senior executive at AIDA Cruises, will become president.

Foschi, who turned 65 last fall, will stay on as chairman and a managing director of the Costa group and remain on Carnival’s board of directors. He joined Costa as CEO in October 1997 and became chairman in January of 2000.

Cool Social Networking Turns Consumers Into Brand Fans
By BRIAN DEAGON, INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY

BD Special Report: Social Media

When the Carnival Cruise ship Costa Concordia struck a rock and sank in shallow water off Italy on Jan. 13, killing 32, critical comments exploded on social media sites such as Facebook (FB) and Twitter.

Carnival had no apparent plan to respond to the wave of negative comments. For six days its Facebook page looked as though Carnival didn't know the shipwreck existed. The cruise firm continued to post typical updates on travel, special deals and features.
All the while more negative comments flooded in.

It took six days for Carnival to reverse course and react to the comments, helping calm the uproar.

Unlike times past when companies could control the flow of information, the Internet has turned that concept on its head.

Social media sites create a two-way street where consumers post views — good and bad — to a potential audience of millions.

Search for missing bodies at stricken cruise ship goes on
April 29, 2012

(AGI) Florence - Rain and a choppy sea didn't stop operations to recover items that fell out of cruise ship Costa Concordia.
Today, the staff of companies Smit Salvage and Neri have continued recovering materials and items that fell out of the capsized cruise liner. The search for 2 bodies that are still missing in the sunken side of the ship will resume in the next few days.

Final 2 bodies from Costa Concordia may soon be recovered
By Marcus Hondro
April 29, 2012

When the Costa Concordia, the massive Italian cruise liner that sunk Jan. 13, went down, over 4,200 passengers and crew were aboard. Thirty-two did not survive the tragedy but only 30 bodies have been recovered.
There is hope the two bodies still missing will be found, and found soon. The Italian news agency, Agenzia Italia (AGI) has been filing ongoing reports on the tragedy off the island of Giglio, and their latest suggests an area of the ship not yet searched may contain the missing bodies. Some areas of the ship, which lies half-submerged in the water, have not been easy, or safe, to access because they rest up against the rocky ledge the ship leans upon.
Costa Concordia balconies being checked for bodies
AGI reported that "targeted" checks of balconies on ship levels 6, 7 and 8 were done in the past few days but the bodies were not found. However, AGI adds that "the fire brigade and the state police will now have to check, from inside the ship, some cabins whose balconies can't be accessed, as they are located near the rock ledge the hull is resting on."

Take up issue with MEA: Rebello family to CM
May 1, 2012

The family of missing Indian national Russell Rebello (32) has written to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan urging him to take up the issue with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Rebello had gone missing when Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia had run aground near the island of Giglio in Italy on January 13 this year.

Rebello’s elder brother Kevin submitted a letter to the Chief Minister’s office in this regard. “I have urged the CM to ensure that he takes up the issue with New Delhi. It has been more than three months since the incident took place and we are yet to hear from the Italian authorities on my brother’s whereabouts,” said Kevin.
 ::snipping2::
“They conducted search operations, but did not find him. I am afraid they may call off the search,” he said. Russell worked as a waiter aboard the ill-fated cruise liner. He had joined the liner in October last year, after initially working with leading hotels in the city.

“He is married and has a four-year-old son. We are waiting for some news about him,” said Kevin.

Here's another viewpoint about what to do with the ship:

http://www.wellandtribune.ca/2012/05/04/scuba-diver-concordia-should-be-sunk
Scuba diver: Concordia should be sunk
May 4, 2012

The Costa Concordia, the wrecked liner which has been half-submerged near the Italian island of Giglio since it hit a rock in January, could be a paradise for recreational scuba divers from around the world - if sunk instead of salvaged.

"Every night I light a candle and say a prayer for it to sink," Aldo Baffigi, a Giglio native, says of the 290-metre-long ship with its towering smokestack and four swimming pools.

Most of the Tuscan island's 1,500 residents want the modern-day Titanic to be hauled away as soon as possible, but Baffigi is an underwater guide and owner of Deep Blue Diving College, and he knows the fascination shipwrecks have for scuba divers.

"It would be the most popular shipwreck in the world. We wouldn't know what to do with all the divers. It would be like manna from heaven."

With the salvage set to begin this month, Baffigi's prayers have not yet had the desired effect.

But he has not lost hope because such a massive ship has never been salvaged in one piece, and a strong storm could still send the cruise liner, precariously perched on an undersea ledge, sliding down into deeper waters

Costa Concordia payout offer 'an insult', says dancer

A dancer who was caught up in the Costa Concordia cruise disaster has said the amount of compensation offered by the ship's owners is "insulting".

Rose Metcalf, of Dorset, was performing on the ship when it ran aground off Italy, resulting in 32 deaths.

She has been offered 6,000 euros, which she believes to be a third of the value of the possessions she lost.

Miss Metcalf, 23, has joined a class action lawsuit in the US against the ship's operators, Carnival Group.

Carnival Group said Miss Metcalf had not been directly employed by the firm.

A spokesman said because she was a concessionaire, it was not up to Carnival to decide how much she was given in compensation.
 ::snipping2::
Carnival also suspended Miss Metcalf's salary on 16 January, despite her contract running for a further two months, she said.

She returned to London to audition for West End shows but was hindered by a torn tricep she said she suffered when she was airlifted.

Miss Metcalf said: "I'd been left penniless so was sofa-surfing with friends, but was unable to contribute to bills.

"I'd no intention of suing Carnival until I received the compensation offer from Lloyds of London, on behalf of Carnival.

Costa cruise lines announces safety changes, new ship Fascinosa

By Robert Jenkins

Venice, Italy -- -- Even as it christened its new flagship Saturday, May 5, the venerable Costa Crociere line announced several changes in its safety procedures. The impetus for those changes was hardly noted during the christening, yet the tragic crash of Costa Concordia less than four months earlier had to be on most everyone's mind.

Indeed, Costa Chairman and CEO Pier Luigi Foschii alluded to the Concordia obliquely, never by name:

"The delivery of the Costa Fascinosa is an important stepping stone on our company's road to recovery ...After the recent incident, despite the economic downtown and the impact on consumption (of cruises), Costa has bounced back and booking volumes are back to the same levels recorded this time last year."

It sounds like a lot of money until we see it's $11,700.00 to each survivor.

Costa Concordia owner doles out 2 million euros to French survivors
May 8, 2012

PARIS - The owner of the Costa Concordia cruise liner that ran aground off northwest Italy in January has paid more than two million euros to French survivors in a settlement, their lawyer said Tuesday.

Costa Crociere, owned by U.S. giant Carnival Corp., paid 9,000 euros ($11,700) each to 235 survivors, their lawyer Bernard Courtois told AFP.

Thirty-two people were killed when Costa Concordia capsised on January 13 with some 3,200 passengers aboard.
Out of these, 456 were French and  ::snipping2:: some 20 joined a class-action suit in the United States and another 20 are pursuing legal action independently, Courtois said.

The settlement agreed by the 235 remaining survivors was paid by the company on May 4, he said, adding that the settlement did not preclude further legal action.

Removal of Capsized Costa Concordia to Begin in Italy

So it’s good news for residents that the American company Titan Salvage will team with Italian contractor Micoperi to tow away the ship in one piece. The two companies will work together to tug the 114,000-ton ship upright onto an underwater platform, where they’ll repair the gash on its side.

They’ll then attach two air-filled flotation devices to keep the vessel buoyant as it’s towed to a nearby port. The year-long, $300 million removal project is set to start this month.

Mayor Ortilli says the plans respects the community’s wishes. “It respects the environment,” says Ortilli. “It won’t interfere with tourism, and it will keep the ship whole, so any contaminated liquids will not be spilled.”

Those liquids include paint, cleaners and cooking oil normally used on the cruise ship. They’re still held in plastic and metal containers aboard the ship.

Marcello Mossa Verre, the head of Tuscany’s Environmental Protection Agency, is worried that those containers which could begin to degrade in the corrosive sea water.

“If they can remove the ship quickly, and by quickly, I mean months or a year at the most,” says Mossa Verre, “then the containers can hold. But they can’t hold indefinitely. We’ve analyzed the plastics and know that if the ship stays there longer, it will be a problem.”

Come closer again, we love you, tourism chiefs tell cruise lines
NICK PISA
May 8, 2012

ROME: Tourism chiefs and hotel bosses have asked for cruise ship ''sail-by salutes'' - which became infamous following the Costa Concordia tragedy - to resume.

Officials said the practice should be allowed ''safely and securely'' as it was fundamental to the tourist trade which Italy relies upon, especially in the summer, when it has more than 40 million visitors a year.

In January the cruise liner Costa Concordia capsized after it struck rocks while carrying out a salute. Thirty-two people died, and the captain, Francesco Schettino, is under house arrest charged with multiple manslaughter and causing a shipwreck.

At the time there was outrage when it emerged that cruise ships regularly carried out sail-by salutes, or inchinos as they are known in Italian, for publicity, coming dangerously close to the shoreline in order to promote tourism and cruise holidays.

In the days after the disaster off the island of Giglio, footage emerged of ships sailing close not only to that island but also Procida near Naples and the coast of Sicily - their huge superstructures dwarfing holidaymakers watching from harbour walls and the beach.

Ermando Mennella, the president of the federation of hotel owners of Ischia, a popular holiday island close to Naples, said: ''The inchino should be allowed to continue but obviously with safety and security guaranteed for all.

Musical troupe sues for $200M over Costa Concordia disaster
May 11, 2012

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Four performers who entertained passengers on the doomed Costa Concordia are suing the luxury liner's owners and operators for $200 million.

The musicians and dancers -- all from Hungary -- accuse operator Carnival Corp. and the Italian Costa Crociere cruise line of "gross negligence" in the deadly Jan. 13 crash off the coast of Italy.

Court papers allege that the crew was not properly trained to operate and evacuate the ship, which capsized after ramming a reef, killing 32 people.

The White Plains, N.Y., federal court filing seeks $50 million per plaintiff for physical injuries, "mental anguish" and lost wages, along with punitive damages.

A fifth member of the troupe, musician Sandor Feher, did not make it off the boat alive.

Initial reports said Feher drowned after returning to his room to retrieve his violin, but plaintiff lawyer Peter Ronai said Thursday that Feher died of blunt trauma to the head after apparently slipping during a heroic rescue effort.

Plans to refloat the Costa Concordia cruise ship given approval
By Marcus Hondro
May 15, 2012

The plans to remove the cruise ship the Costa Concordia were approved by Italian civil authorities Tues., May 15. The two companies undertaking the project, Titan Salvage of the U.S. and Micoperi of Italy, intend to refloat the entire ship.
 ::snipping2::
There was a conference about the plans in Rome at the Civil Defence Department Tuesday, the AGI news agency of Italy reports, chaired by Franco Gabrielli, the Commissioner for Emergencies. Others attending included officials from the environment, health care, cultural heritage and infrastructure and transport ministries.
Parameters around the removal were drawn up and approved and the two salvage companies now have the green light to begin operations. Refloating the Costa Concordia is expected to take up to a year and once completed the ship will be sailed to a port and scrapped.
