Costa Concordia: Stowaways the latest uncertainty
Unregistered passengers – stowaways – may have been aboard the Costa Concordia cruise ship that wrecked off the coast of Italy, meaning the final death toll could go higher.
By Frances D'Emilio and Trisha Thomas
January 22, 2012

GIGLIO, Italy

Unregistered passengers might have been aboard the stricken cruise liner that capsized off this Tuscan island, a top rescue official said Sunday, raising the possibility that the number of missing might be higher than the 20 previously announced.
Rescuers, meanwhile, resumed searching the above-water section of the Costa Concordia but choppy seas kept divers from exploring the submerged part, where officials have said there could be bodies.

"There could have been X persons who we don't know about who were inside, who were clandestine" passengers aboard the ship, Franco Gabrielli, the national civil protection official in charge of the rescue effort, told reporters at a briefing on the island of Giglio, where the ship, with 4,200 people aboard rammed a reef and sliced open its hull on Jan. 13 before turning over on its side.
Gabrielli said that relatives of a Hungarian woman have told Italian authorities that she had telephoned them from aboard the ship and that they haven't heard from her since the accident. He said it was possible that a woman's body pulled from the wreckage by divers on Saturday might be that of the unregistered passenger.

But the identity of that body and of three male bodies, all badly decomposed after days in the water, have yet to be established. Gabrielli said they have identified the other eight bodies: four French, an Italian, a Hungarian, a German and a Spanish national.

Until Sunday, authorities had said that 20 people are still missing.

Confrontation grows between Italy captain and ship group
January 22, 2012

(Reuters) - The captain of the cruise liner that capsized off Italy's coast has told prosecutors the vessel's operators, Costa Cruises, instructed him to perform a maneuver that brought it too close to shore, according to leaked transcripts of his questioning.
 ::snipping2::
Costa Cruises have said they were not aware of the dangerous practice of bringing the ship so close to the shore and have suspended the captain, saying he was responsible for the disaster.

But in a sign of the growing confrontation between Schettino and the ship owners, the captain told investigating magistrates Costa had instructed him to do the salute, according to transcripts of his hearing published by Italian media.

"It was planned, we should have done it a week earlier but it was not possible because of bad weather," Schettino said.

"They insisted. They said: 'We do tourist navigation, we have to be seen, get publicity and greet the island'."

He also said that the black box on board had been broken for two weeks, and that he had asked for it to be repaired, in vain.
In the hearing, Schettino insisted he had informed Costa's headquarters of the accident straight away, and his line of conduct had been approved by the company's marine operations director throughout a series of phone conversations.

He acknowledged, however, not raising the alarm with the coast guard promptly and delaying the evacuation order.

"You can't evacuate people on lifeboats and then, if the ship doesn't sink, say it was a joke. I don't want to create panic and have people die for nothing," he said.
 ::snipping2::
Taped conversations have revealed the ship's bridge told coast guards who were alerted by passengers that the vessel had only suffered a black-out even after those on board donned life vests.

Italy cruise ship rescuers find 13th body
January 22, 2012

Giglio, Italy (CNN) -- Italian search-and-rescue teams have found another body aboard the partly sunken cruise ship Costa Concordia, civil protection office spokeswoman Francesca Maffini said Sunday.

The woman is the 13th confirmed victim of the wreck on January 13.

Divers are working to recover the body, which was found underwater on bridge number 7, Maffini said. The victim was wearing a life jacket, she said.

The discovery leaves about 19 people still missing since the ship hit rocks in the shallow waters off the coast of Tuscany, according to CNN count.
 ::snipping2::

A committee comprising the parties involved in the rescue told a briefing for reporters and residents on the island that search and rescue efforts will continue -- but that the environmental risk is also becoming urgent.

Two more bodies found at Italy shipwreck
January 23, 2012

GIGLIO, Italy (AP) – Italian officials said two more bodies have been pulled from the wreckage of a cruise liner capsized off the Tuscan coast, bringing the number of confirmed dead to 15.

The national civil protection agency official in charge of the search said Monday that divers recovered the bodies of two women from the ship's internet cafe.

The recovery of the two brings to 17 the number of known missing. However, officials over the weekend said it appeared unregistered guests were on board at the time of the accident, meaning the number of officially missing could increase.

Costa Concordia: Bodies found as fuel pumping to start
January 23, 2012

 ::snipping2::
The BBC's Luisa Baldini, on the Tuscan island of Giglio, says the bodies of the two women were found near the internet cafe, on the fourth deck.

There is no decision yet on when fuel pumping will begin but the civil protection agency has said it is likely to start within the next 24 hours.

Civil protection official Franco Gabrielli told reporters on Giglio there was no risk the Costa Concordia would drop down to a lower seabed.

"We are ready to go," an official from the Dutch salvage company Smit told the BBC. "As soon as we get the green light, we start the work".

But our correspondent says the salvagers must first attach steel moorings to the front of the ship. They will not want to start pumping in the dark, she says, so work is likely to begin on Tuesday.

Costa Concordia: two more bodies pulled from ship
The death toll from the disaster rises to 15, with the discovery of two more bodies, both believed to be women.
By Nick Squires, Giglio
January 23, 2012
 ::snipping2::
Franco Gabrielli, who is in charge of the massive search and salvage operation, said a scientific committee had determined that it is possible to continue searching for bodies while at the same time starting the fuel extraction operation.
 ::snipping2::
The 2,400 tonnes of heavy oil and diesel are to be pumped out by a Dutch salvage firm, Smit, which has extensive experience of working on such wrecks.

Mr Gabrielli, the head of Italy's respected Civil Protection Authority, said the number of missing could be as high as 24 or 25.

They include Americans, French, Italians, a Peruvian and an Indian.
Ennio Aquilino, a spokesman for the Italian fire service, said his men faced increasingly unsanitary conditions as they searched the parts of the ship which remain above water.

The huge amounts of food that the vessel was carrying – it was at the start of a week-long Mediterranean cruise and had on board more than 4,000 passengers and crew – was rotting and creating a terrible smell.

Concordia Insurance Claims May Reach $1 Billion, Moody’s Says
By Alessandra Migliaccio
January 23, 2012

Jan. 23 (Bloomberg) -- The insurance costs related to the sinking of Carnival Corp.’s Costa Concordia off the coast of Italy may reach $1 billion once environmental damage and injuries are added to the count, Moody’s Investors Service said.

The shipwreck “marks the first major insured loss of 2012 and will result in a drag on first-quarter 2012 earnings for affected firms,” Moody’s Senior Credit Officer James Eck wrote in a note published today.

While damage to the ship will cost around $500 million, other items like personal injury and liability and environmental losses may bring up the final bill, the report said. Reinsurers will likely take on most of the burden, Moody’s said.

In a separate report, Jefferies International Ltd. estimated the total cost at 650 million euros ($850 million).
 ::snipping2::
Most of the losses will be incurred by reinsurers, Moody’s said.

Munich Re, the world’s biggest reinsurer, said Jan. 18 its estimated claims would be in the “mid double-digit-million-euro range,” while Hannover Re said today it estimates total losses of about 30 million euros. Specialty insurer Lancashire Holdings will likely face between $20 million and $30 million in claims, according to Jefferies.

“The earnings drag from this loss event will impede capital growth for affected firms and contribute to the perception among investors that the reinsurance sector cannot earn its cost of capital,” Moody’s said.

The Costa Concordia was also insured by companies such as Assicurazioni Generali SpA, RSA Insurance Group Plc and XL Group Plc, according to Jefferies.

There are a number of images here that I hadn't seen before.  Some give an indication of the conditions the rescue divers are facing.

I've been watching the articles alleging "rich Russians ", and I'm going to consider it a rumor unless it can be supported/proven. I find it interesting the story about the missing Hungarian woman reportedly on board but not heard from, nor on the ship's manifest has turned out to be false.  The lady had been dead for three years.  It sounds to me like someone was trying their hand at a false claim/fraud.  No telling what kind of stuff is going to come out of the woodwork.

http://www.news.com.au/travel/news/rich-russians-allegedly-bought-spots-on-lifeboats-as-costa-concordia-ship-sank/story-e6frfq80-1226252252706
Rich Russians allegedly bought spots on lifeboats as Costa Concordia ship sank
January 23, 2012

WEALTHY Russian passengers allegedly bribed Costa Concordia crew members to let them skip the queue for spots on lifeboats, it has been claimed.

Authorities are investigating reports from eyewitnesses who told Italian prosecutors that well-dressed Russians from first-class cabins stuffed wads of cash into the hands of crew members in a bid to be some of the first to board the lifeboats, the UK's Sun reported.

The disabled were also left to fend for themselves as the ship listed and began to sink, according to statements given to Italian officials.

Franca Anichini, 52, who lives nearby the shipwreck in Giglio, told German media that she was surprised to see so many men being brought to shore early on.

“I went to the boats as I saw them coming in expecting to see women, children and the injured but all I saw were healthy men and elegant women in evening gowns who were speaking Russian," Mr Anichini said.
 ::snipping2::
Meanwhile it has been discovered that a woman reported missing by a Hungarian family in the Costa Concordia disaster in fact died three years ago.

"The person who made the claim about the missing person turned out to be abusing the personal data of a person who had died three years ago," the Hungarian foreign ministry said.

it is kindof scary to me that they are saying that stowaways could have been on board...when checking in on a cruise, we have security checks to go through..with the possibility of stowaways, there is no telling what kind of unsavory characters are onboard that one would not be expecting to be there..know what I mean? I had not even entertained the idea of stowaways on a cruise liner!

Yes, it does sound scarey.  Especially since the new laws that were put into effect since 9/11.
