Costa Concordia: cruise ship rep's clothing found in captain's cabin
John Hooper in Rome
February 2, 2012
Items of clothing belonging to a former passenger representative who was allegedly at the captain's side when the Costa Concordia hit a rock off the island of Giglio last month have been found in his cabin, according to Italian news agency reports.
Domnica Cemortan, 25, from Chisinau, Moldova, has become a central figure in the investigation, which is trying to establish why the captain, Francesco Schettino, took the 114,500-tonne cruise liner so close to the jagged shoreline. Up to 32 people died after the ship listed first one way and then another before capsizing on a rocky ledge further up the coast.
::snipping2::
Cemortan, a former dancer, also appeared to contradict statements by members of the crew that she had been invited on to the bridge by Schettino on the night of 13 January to watch him execute a sail-past in honour of a retired liner captain. She has denied being his lover.
::snipping2::
Cemortan first entered the tangled story of the wrecking of the Costa Concordia when a retired Italian couple told their local newspaper they had watched from a nearby table as the captain entertained a young woman at dinner. They claimed Schettino had drunk copious amounts of wine before heading back to the bridge. The captain and his employers have said he is teetotal.
Cemortan's contract with Costa Cruises, the operators of the liner, had just ended but she bought a ticket to spend a week on board the ship as a tourist. A source close to the investigation said at an early stage that she appeared not to have been assigned a cabin.

From shipwreck in Italy, a treasure now beckons
By Vanessa Gera
February 2, 2012
ROME—In the chaotic evacuation of the Costa Concordia, passengers and crew abandoned almost everything on board the cruise ship: jewels, cash, champagne, antiques, 19th century Bohemian crystal glassware, thousands of art objects including 300-year-old woodblock prints by a Japanese master.
In other words, a veritable treasure now lies beneath the pristine Italian waters where the luxury liner ran aground last month.
Though some objects are bound to disintegrate, there is still hoard enough to tempt treasure seekers -- just as the Titanic and countless shipwrecks before have lured seekers of gold, armaments and other riches for as far back as mankind can remember.
It may be just a matter of time before treasure hunters set their sights on the sunken spoils of the Costa Concordia, which had more than 4,200 people on board.
"As long as there are bodies in there, it's considered off base to everybody because it's a grave," said Robert Marx, a veteran diver and the author of numerous books on maritime history and underwater archaeology and treasure hunting. "But when all the bodies are out, there will be a mad dash for the valuables."
The Mafia, he said, even has underwater teams that specialize in going after sunken booty.

Validus: May Pay Up To $65 Million For Costa Concordia Shipwreck
February 2, 2012
NEW YORK – Insurer Validus Holdings Ltd. (VR) said it may be on the hook for $50 million to $65 million because of the Costa Concordia shipwreck, a loss that could eclipse its payout from the widespread flooding that crippled Thailand late last year.
Validus's estimate of its own losses are based on its prediction that the total insured payout on the shipwreck will be $845 million to $950 million, meaning the Bermuda-based company expects to shoulder about 15% of the industrywide loss.

I hope the losses in the Costa Concordia weren't all for nothing. There are valuable lessons to be learned.
I would like to see this studied and some across the board changes made in safety for the passengers and crews.
It's sad that sometimes it takes something like the Concordia grounding for some to realize changes must be made. But I believe this is being taken seriously and if changes can be made and are implemented in a
consistent
fashion, it will be better for the passengers and crews and for the cruise industry overall.
Agree MuffyBee. What you are asking for is happening from several different angles, jurisdictions and governing arms. It will take awhile
There currently is standardization and consistency -- there will be more as a result of this tragedy.
For me, the issue is governance and compliance and enforcement.
I have still not stopped shaking my head about the captain's admission that he was 'navigating by sight'. In the DARK. In ROCKY waters.

Cruise Ship Capt. Admits Navigating By Sight
Judge Says Captain Claimed He Knew Waters Well

GIGLIO, Italy (CNN) -- An interrogation of the cruise ship Captain Francesco Schettino has yielded a startling admission: The captain says he was navigating by sight when the ship ran aground.
Prosecutor Francesco Verusio has accused the captain of piloting the ship too fast to allow him to react to dangers, causing the shipwreck, according to legal papers.
Judge Valeria Montesarchio's initial ruling found Schettino changed the ship's course, steering too close to shore and causing the ship to hit a rock.
The judge said the captain admitted to making a mistake and that, at the time of the collision, he was navigating by sight.

France opens inquiry into Costa Concordia shipwreck
February 2, 2012
(Reuters) - The Paris prosecutor's office opened a preliminary inquiry on Thursday into the causes of the Costa Concordia cruise ship disaster in Italy last month, following a decision to group together legal complaints by relatives of French victims.
The prosecutor's office said survivors of the shipwreck off the Tuscan coast would be questioned in the investigation, as it seeks to establish whether there are criminal liabilities in the case and assess psychological damage caused by the accident.
Four French nationals were among the 17 casualties whose bodies were recovered after the 114,500-tonne Costa Concordia hit a rock.
Some 15 people, two of them French, are still unaccounted for and a criminal investigation is under way in Italy, with the cruise ship's captain, Francesco Schettino, facing charges of multiple manslaughter and abandoning ship before the evacuation of more than 4,200 passengers and crew was complete.
::snipping2::
There were 462 French people on board the cruise. After meeting last week with representatives of a victims' association based near the city of Bordeaux, the French justice ministry took a decision to group all the French complaints together.
The French inquiry could run in parallel with the Italian inquiry or be used to complement it.

These were the 'rumours' circulating early on.......she denied them. The rescue workers found her lingerie in the captains cabin....she admitted the truth. That is what the story says at the link provided.
A little distracted...perhaps a little inebriated?
And of course, the captain is married
I don't remember reading if there are children involved as well.

If the captain has engaged in extra-marital relations during a cruise, that reflects on his and the cruise lines image. It has an ugly side to it. If if he was drinking alcohol while on the ship,
particularly the night he of the grounding,
that would be really, really bad imo and could have clouded his judgement, akin to driving while intoxicated, but multiplied by many times, at least the number of passengers and crew = 4,000 + he endangered, not to mention the at least 32 missing and/or dead.
Looks like if he was seen drinking alcohol, he should be in line for come criminal negligence charges at least or more. JMHO

'Fifth Estate' looks at 'Costa Concordia' sinking
By Alex Strachan, Postmedia News
February 4, 2012
::snipping2:: CBC News Network is repeating fifth estate reporter Bob McKeown's minutebyminute account of last month's capsizing - on Friday the 13th, no less - of the cruise ship Costa Concordia, after it struck a rock in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the western coast of Italy.
The ABC newsmagazine 20/20 aired a similar program Jan. 21, a week after the disaster, but McKeown's account for the fifth estate has the benefit of more time and, inevitably, hindsight.
The Costa Concordia ship's captain has already had his day of infamy, and will no doubt be the focus of many investigative programs in the months, and possibly, years, to come. What's more interesting about the fifth estate's account are the testi-monials of those people who haven't been in the news headlines, but probably deserve to be:
the ship's doctor, for example, who was frantically treating injured passengers, even as many of his ship's colleagues put their lives ahead of the passengers; or the local Italian politician who boarded the stricken ship against his better judgment and stayed to the end, even as many others fled.
The fifth estate program raises important questions, in the aftermath of a wreck that, by all accounts, should never have happened in the first place. (CBC News Network, 8 p.m.)

A woman who miscarried after the Costa Concordia crash will sue the ship's parent company
February 5, 2012
A PREGNANT woman who miscarried after the cruise ship wreck off the coast of Italy last month is set to sue the vessel's owners for $A1.2 million in damages, Italian media says.
The 30-year-old Italian, identified only as Cristina M, was four months pregnant when she set off on the Costa Concordia cruise on January 13. Though she escaped the sinking ship in a lifeboat, she was admitted to hospital last week with a miscarriage.
Her doctors said she likely lost her baby because of the intense psychological stress suffered both during the night-time evacuation and when her lifeboat smashed up against rocks as it headed for the nearby shore.
Christina M's lawyers will add her to a class action against Costa Crociere and seek $A1.2 million in damages for the miscarriage.

PROSECUTORS are investigating claims that underage crew were employed on doomed liner Costa Concordia.
A tip-off to Italian coastguards told them to search for youngsters aged between 13 and 16 who slept in the hold and worked as porters.

Last night owners Costa Cruises strongly denied any of the crew were employed illegally.

Costa Concordia to be re-floated
February 6, 2012
The stricken Costa Concordia will be re-floated whole and hauled away the Genoa-based cruise line has confirmed.
The announcement quashes suggestions the vessel could be cut up for scrap at its present location.
Residents on the Isle of Giglio had voiced concerns the scrapping of the vessel could damage tourism in the region during the bust summer months.
Costa confirmed ten leading salvage companies had been invited to submit bids, with a decision expected at the end of March.
The operation to move the vessel is then likely to be completed in the first quarter of 2012.
