What an insult to the victims!

Perhaps  proceeds from the book could be a source of income for the victims if and when they bring suits against the Captain. And maybe what he writes will be used against him in court. JMHO

Costa Concordia: Five more bodies found
March 22, 2012

More than two months after the cruise ship Costa Concordia capsized off the Italian coast, a team searching the wreck has found five more bodies.
Italian authorities say they were found outside the ship, in a small space between the wreck and the sea bed.

Altogether 30 bodies have now been found since the vessel ran aground off the island of Giglio on 13 January.
 ::snipping2::
Eight more bodies were found in late February, but forensic authorities are still working on formally identifying them.

A crew member from India and passengers from the US, Italy and Germany are reported to be among those as yet unaccounted for.
 ::snipping2::
Salvage experts say they are close to completing the operation to remove all the oil from the ship's 17 tanks. Work began on 12 February and the team involved said they would stop on Friday night.

Although they said that some fuel remained in the bulkheads of the tanks, the oil involved was in "such small quantities as to pose no significant environment risk".

The next stage of the salvage operation will involve cleaning up the sea bed and the area around the ship's hull before work begins to lift the wreck. Removing the Costa Concordia is expected to take up to a year.

Five more bodies found in wrecked Italian ship
March 22, 2012

(Reuters) - Five more bodies have been found in the half-submerged wreck of the Costa Concordia cruise liner, bringing the number of confirmed dead to 30, Italy's Civil Protection agency said on Thursday.

The giant vessel capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio after hitting rocks on January 13. Two people are still unaccounted for.

A spokeswoman for the agency said all the bodies were discovered at the rear of the vessel. It would probably be several days before they could be removed as it would be a complicated operation using robots, she said.

Costa Concordia raises doubts over ECDIS data quality
March 22, 2012

The tragic sinking of cruise ship Costa Concordia has raised questions over the data quality of the electronic chart display information system (ECDIS).

The ECDIS is a database of information that includes data from radar about other ships in the area, as well as water hazards that have been documented over many years to help avoid collisions. This is mandatory equipment on all vessels, but the data it holds has recently been called into question by trade union Nautilus International.

According to the union, the data validation could be very outdated and out of touch with current hazards. Maxim van Norden, who spent 36 years in the Naval Oceanographic Office and now works in the department of marine science at the University of Southern Mississippi, says approximately 50 per cent of the chart data provided by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration used by ECDIS was collected before 1940.

This brings up a point of contention in relation to the calculated risks businesses take, and shows that outdated information can lead to traffic consequences. Taking risks is often a necessity in business, but they must be calculated risks based on sound data management.

Fuel cleared from Costa Concordia wreck
March 26, 2012

Authorities say they have removed all the fuel that was left aboard the Costa Concordia cruise ship that capsized off Italy.

The process of getting more than 2000 tonnes of fuel and sewage was completed on Saturday.

There had been fears that any fuel leaking from the ship would pollute the pristine waters off the Tuscan island of Giglio, where the ship rammed a reef on January 13. But authorities say no significant pollution has been detected.

Carnival Triumph ordered held in Galveston
By Laura Elder, The Daily News
March 31, 2012

GALVESTON — Officials with Florida-based Carnival Cruise Lines are meeting with attorneys this morning and scrambling to ensure that the 2,758-passenger vessel Carnival Triumph can sail from Galveston as planned today.

Meanwhile, Port Director Mike Mierzwa recommends that passengers continue on with plans to sail today in the event Carnival can resolve legal issues.

On Friday, a U.S. judge ordered the cruise ship held in Galveston as part a $10 million lawsuit filed by the family of a German tourist who died aboard the Costa Concordia shipwreck off the Italian coast, according to Bloomberg news service.

“The court finds that the conditions for an attachment of defendants’ joint and collective property within this district, mainly the MS Carnival Triumph, appear to exist upon an admiralty and maritime claim,” U.S. Magistrate Judge John Froeschner of Galveston said in the warrant, Bloomberg reports.

The Carnival Triumph would be allowed to unload passengers and cargo and move between berths within the port until a “prompt hearing” can be scheduled, at which “the plaintiff shall be required to show why the attachment and garnishment should not be vacated,” according to the order, Bloomberg reports.

The Triumph was scheduled to sail today for a five-day cruise to Yucatan and Cozumel, according to a Carnival website.

Mierzwa said he hoped by early afternoon to know more about whether Triumph would sail from the island.

This is a developing story. Check back fore more information this afternoon.

Judge Orders Carnival Triumph Held in Galveston
March 31, 2012

(12:45 p.m. EDT) -- Questions are swirling around today's scheduled departure of the 2,758-passenger Carnival Triumph after a judge ordered the ship held in Galveston, according to the Bloomberg news service. The move comes as part of a $10 million lawsuit filed in federal court in Galveston by relatives of a German tourist who died in the Costa Concordia disaster.

The ship is scheduled to leave at 6 p.m. EDT for a five day Western Caribbean voyage. The Galveston Daily News is reporting that the port director is advising passengers on the next cruise to carry on with their plans, and at this time, Carnival cruise director John Heald says on his Facebook page that embarkation has begun.

According to a statement provided to Cruise Critic by Carnival, "We are aware of the situation and are working through the appropriate legal channels to resolve it. The litigation in question relates to a matter that involved a European-based cruise line that is a sister line to Carnival Cruise Lines. We are optimistic that the issues regarding the Carnival Triumph will be resolved and the ship will depart on its scheduled voyage later today."

Bloomberg reports that the warrant ordering the ship held in port states that the “court finds that the conditions for an attachment of defendants' joint and collective property within this district, mainly the MS Carnival Triumph, appear to exist upon an admiralty and maritime claim.”

Furthermore, Bloomberg says,Triumph would be allowed to unload passengers and cargo and move between berths until a “prompt hearing” can be scheduled.

I wondered how the seizure order originated.  This article gives some information.

Carnival Ship Released to Sail From Port as Deal Is Struck

 ::snipping2::
U.S. Magistrate Judge John Froeschner released the MS Carnival Triumph today from a seizure order holding the cruise liner in its home port of Galveston, said John Eaves Jr., a lawyer for the victim’s family.

The Triumph, which is owned by the same company that owns the Costa Concordia, was sought as security in a lawsuit (CCL) that was also filed March 30 in Galveston federal court by the family of Siglinde Stumpf, a German tourist who died in the shipwreck.

 ::snipping2::
Shot Over the Bow

Eaves said in a telephone interview earlier today that the Triumph could be freed from the seizure order if the cruise line agreed to post a $10 million security bond in the German tourist’s lawsuit. Details of the resolution, which was reached about 30 minutes before departure time, are confidential, Eaves said in an e-mailed statement.

Eaves, based in Jackson, Mississippi, said he’s part of an international consumer movement lobbying for increased oversight and safety standards in the global cruise industry. He said 16 cruise ships have sunk worldwide in the past 20 years. At least 25 people died after the Costa Concordia ran aground off Italy in January.

Eaves said he filed Stumpf’s lawsuit in Galveston to target the Triumph, which he said has “the same inadequate safety standards as the Costa Concordia, exactly the same.”

“We’ve not been able to get Carnival’s attention, so this is our shot over the bow to let them know we’re serious about changing the law and maritime standards,” Eaves said. “We want a uniform set of safety standards, and we won’t stop until we get it.”

Huge Operation To Refloat Costa Concordia
April 2, 2012

 ::snipping2::
The method used to refloat the 114,000 tonne Costa will involve sealing up the holes in the structure of the hull, as well as the huge gash and sealing off sections into airtight compartments.

From there huge pontoons and cranes will be brought in, while pipelines are fixed to the Costa and air will be pumped into the compartments to give it buoyancy before it is straightened and then towed away to a dock, most likely its home port of Genoa where it was launched in 2006.

This option is expected to cost around $300m (£187m) - about half of what the ship is worth - and the insurers will then have to decide whether to scrap the vessel or refit it and put it back into service, although the most likely option is for it to be sold on.
 ::snipping2::
The other possibility was for the Concordia to be cut into sections of 100 to 500 tonnes and carried away on huge barges but this plan was opposed by locals and the Italian authorities as it carried the most risk of environmental pollution.

John Noble of the International Salvage Union, said: "This will be one of the biggest ever removal jobs in maritime history. Removing a ship of this size and weight intact will be very expensive and it also could be very dangerous.

"The companies involved will have had to carry out underwater surveys to check out the ship and the area around where it is resting - in essence the holes will all be sealed up and water pumped out and air pumped in to the compartments to get her buoyant again."

Cristiano Pellegrini, spokesman for Giglio council, said: "The removal intact of the ship was always the solution that we and the regional authorities wanted because it ensured the least impact on the environment.

"It also respects the memory of those who died - to have the ship cut up into pieces with two people still missing would have not seemed correct. We do still have plans for a permanent memorial and among those being considered but it is still premature."
