Costa Concordia captain says he'll 'certainly' command another ship
January 30, 2013

 ::snipping2::
Francesco Schettino is challenging Costa Crociere SpA's decision to fire him after the Concordia ran aground off Tuscany Jan. 13, 2012, and capsized, killing 32 people. Court-appointed experts have blamed Schettino for the disaster, saying he took the ship off course in a stunt.
 ::snipping2::
As he arrived Wednesday for the closed-door hearing in Torre Annunziata, near Naples, Schettino was asked if he thought he'd command a ship again. He replied: "Yes, certainly."
A separate court is deciding whether to indict Schettino on manslaughter and other charges.

'Costa Concordia': Italy's Casualty Report Still Overdue
February 7, 2013

(press release)
The Board of Directors of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) regret Italy has not submitted its findings to IMO.
ICS, representing all sectors and trades and over 80% of the world's merchant fleet recently met in London.

The issues that ICS members considered included: frustration with the failure of Italy to submit a full maritime casualty report to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) following the ‘Costa Concordia’ cruise ship tragedy which occurred over a year ago; the continuing discussions at IMO and elsewhere on the best means of achieving further carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions reduction from ships; and serious concerns that the IMO Convention on Ship Recycling, adopted to improve standards throughout the world’s ship recycling yards, is in danger of being undermined by regional measures being discussed by the European Union.

The ICS Board reviewed the continuing response at IMO to the ‘Costa Concordia’ cruise ship tragedy, and welcomed the measures that have so far been taken forward relating to passenger safety and evacuation procedures.

“The response of IMO so far has been measured and reasonable and we have been impressed by the commitment amongst governments to avoid knee jerk reactions” said ICS Chairman, Masamichi Morooka. “But IMO is under increasing pressure to take forward far more radical steps in advance of Italy publishing the complete results of its accident investigation, which it has still singularly failed to do.  Given the seriousness of the disaster, which happened over a year ago, this failure by Italy is simply unacceptable.  We still have no official understanding of what the underlying causes were with respect to an accident that really should never have happened.”

Crane replaces rock that hit Costa Concordia cruise ship
February 7, 2013

One year after the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia wreckage, victims' relatives watched as a crane lowered part of a rock that was removed from the hull of the ship into the water.
Two Effer marine cranes 200000 on the Voe Earl platform have been nearby the shores of the Giglio island, Tuscany, for months for the removal of the shipwrecks. The cranes put the rock into the sea during the one-year anniversary ceremony. The rock had been torn from the ship during the collision and remained stuck in the hull for almost one year.

Catlin annoyed at Costa Concordia costs
February 8, 2013

The insurer Catlin has criticised Italian authorities for insisting the wreck of the Costa Concordia be removed in one piece, a complex operation that has pushed up its expected costs of the disaster by almost half.
Speaking as Catlin missed annual earnings expectations, Paul Jardine, chief operating officer, warned the bigger than expected expenses threatened to increase insurance premiums for other cruise ship owners.

No central agency oversees, inspects cruise ships,
February 16, 2013

MIAMI -- A byzantine maze of maritime rules and regulations, fragmented oversight and a patchwork quilt of nations that do business with cruise lines make it tough for consumers to assess the health and safety record of the ship they're about to board in what for many is the vacation of a lifetime.
Want to know about a ship's track record for being clean? Want to assess how sanitary the food is? It's not that easy to find, in part because there's no one entity or country that oversees or regulates the industry with its fleet of ships that are like mini cities floating at sea.
In the case of Carnival Cruise Lines, the owner of the Carnival Triumph that spent days in the Gulf of Mexico disabled after an engine fire, the company is incorporated in Panama, its offices are based in Miami and its ships fly under the Bahamian flag - a matrix that is not unusual in the cruise line industry.
For potential passengers seeking ship information, there's no central database that can be viewed to determine a track record of safety or health inspections. No one agency regulates everything from the cruise line's mechanical worthiness to the sanitation of its kitchens.
 ::snipping2::
And when something goes wrong, as it did on Triumph, there are limits to how much the Coast Guard can investigate.
These are not new issues - they had been raised by members of Congress before the Triumph incident.
"This horrible situation involving the Carnival Triumph is just the latest example in a long string of serious and troubling incidents involving cruise ships," said Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., who led a committee hearing on cruise safety last year.
Last year, after the Costa Concordia ran aground off the coast of Giglio, Italy, Rockefeller held a Commerce Committee hearing to examine deficiencies in the cruise line industry's compliance with federal safety, security, and environmental standards and review industry regulations.
"As I remarked then, they seem to have two lives: One is at port, where the Coast Guard can monitor their operations; the other is at sea where, it appears once they are beyond three nautical miles from shore, the world is theirs," Rockefeller said in letter he wrote this week to Admiral Robert J. Papp Jr., the commandant of the Coast Guard. "The Carnival Triumph incident only serves to further validate this view."

BLAST FROM THE PAST: COSTA CONCORDIA CRUISE SHIP WRECK VISIBLE ON GOOGLE MAPS
February 14, 2013 at 1:23 pm in Science & Tech

On January 12, 2012, the Costa Concordia cruise ship (also owned by Carnival) hit a reef and ran aground at Isola del Giglio, Tuscany, leaving 32 people dead.

Interestingly enough, the ship — which was declared a “constructive total loss” — is still laying upon it’s side just off the coast of Isola del Giglio. Plans call for the Costa Concordia to be re-floated in the summer of 2013 and towed away to a shipyard where it will be cut up for scrap.

But until then, you can check out some amazing images on Google Maps. Take a look:

Can you spot the Costa Concordia? From far away, the ship looks like an extension of the island:

Costa Concordia victims have jurisdiction victory In Florida
February 26, 2013

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Survivors of the Costa Concordia grounding off the Tuscan coast of Italy in January 2012 won a huge victory in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida last week, when the District Judge ordered the claims of 104 survivors remanded to the Florida State Court for continued litigation. The court's February 15, 2013 order concerned two cases, Denise Abeid-Saba, et al., v. Carnival Corporation et al., (USDC-SDFla Docket No.: 12-CV-23513) and Scimone v. Carnival Corp., (USDC-S.D.Fla Docket No.: 12-CV-23505), together representing the claims of 104 plaintiffs injured when the huge ship capsized after grounding on rocks just off the shore of Isola del Giglio.

Costa Concordia: prosecutors request indictment of captain for manslaughter
Italian prosecutors seek trial of Francesco Schettino and five other crew members after shipwreck killed 32 people

February 25, 2013

Italian prosecutors have officially requested an indictment of the Costa Concordia's captain on manslaughter charges after the grounding of the cruise liner killed 32 people off the Tuscan coast last year.

Prosecutors in Grosseto, Tuscany, are also seeking the trial of Francesco Schettino on charges of causing a shipwreck and abandoning the vessel during the frantic and confused evacuation of passengers and crew.

The prosecutors said the Costa Concordia was conducting a publicity stunt off the coast of tiny Giglio island on the night of 13 January when it ran into a jagged reef, which left a 70-metre-long gash in the hull. The cruise liner quickly took on water and capsized, ending up on its side near the island's port.

Prosecutors also requested the indictment of five other crew members, including two officers who were on the bridge that night. The proposed charges against them vary, but all are accused of manslaughter.

Prosecutors Request Indictments for Cruise Ship Captain in Concordia Case
February 27, 2013

 ::snipping2::
Costa Crociere, the Italian subsidiary of Carnival Corp. and owner of Concordia, has asked for a plea bargain agreement in the case. If accepted, the plea bargain could see Costa pay a (euro) 1 million ($1.35 million) fine, according to the AP.

Costa declined Cruise Critic's request for more information regarding the plea bargain.

In other Costa-related news, Travel Weekly U.K. reported that Pier Luigi Foschi, former Costa Crociere's CEO, donated his company bonus for the 2011-12 year to the Costa Foundation. The charity, which was set up following the Costa Concordia disaster, received $969,000 from Foschi.

Prosecutors release dossier detailing how Costa Concordia victims died
Captain of cruise liner that crashed into rocks could face charges of manslaughter and abandoning ship

March 5, 2013

The youngest victim of the Costa Concordia sinking died shortly after being told there was no space for her or her father in a lifeboat, Italian prosecutors have said.

Five-year-old Dayana Arlotti and her father Williams Arlotti were two of the 32 people who lost their lives when the cruise liner crashed into rocks off the island of Giglio in January last year.

In a 60-page dossier detailing how the victims died, prosecutors in the Italian town of Grosseto called for the captain of the Concordia, Francesco Schettino, to face trial on charges of manslaughter and abandoning ship.

They documented how Dayana and her father had tried and failed to find seats in a lifeboat on the port side of deck number four, and had been directed by staff to the starboard side instead. On the way over, though, Dayana fell into a flooded area and drowned.

Giuseppe Girolamo, a musician who had been working on the ship, gave up his seat in a lifeboat for someone else, only to die himself when he fell into the water.
 ::snipping2::
An investigating judge is expected to announce within weeks that 52-year-old Schettino and several other people, including representatives of Costa Crociere, the company that owned the Concordia, should stand trial.

Costa Concordia Victims 'Doomed by Titanic-Style Lifeboat Chaos'
March 5, 2013

 ::snipping2::
Documents filed by Italian prosecutors against captain Francesco Schettino, who abandoned the cruise liner as it sank, recount chaotic scenes in which some victims died after slipping on the flooded deck, while others drowned in the freezing waters because they were unable to swim.

The documents show that five-year-old Dayana Arlotti, the youngest of the 32 people killed in the tragedy, died along with her father, William, after they were turned away from a lifeboat.

"Having not found places in a lifeboat on deck four on the port side, they were directed by members of the crew to the starboard side," the 60-page dossier reads.

Dayana and her father met their death falling "in a flooded area of the deck, as the ship capsized on its starboard side." William Arlotti tried frantically to pull his daughter to safety, but to no avail.
 ::snipping2::

A similar fate awaited Jeanne Yvonne Gannard and her brother Pierre André Emile Gregoire, as well as Josef Werp and his wife Brunhild.

Maria D'Intorno did not know how to swim. She had found a spot aboard a lifeboat but was forced to get back on the cruise, as this was going down with a tilt angle that prevented the launch.

As waters flooded the area, the woman "was forced to jump into the water" in a desperate attempt to reach the shore. She died along with a further 26 passengers and five crew members.

Prosecutors alleged Schettino's orders caused a shortage of lifeboats.

The captain initially ordered evacuation to take place from the starboard side only. Several lifeboats on the port side were left unused and their launch was later made impossible by the Costa Concordia's sinking.

Costa Concordia Wreck To Be Moved To Port Of Piombino
March 8, 2013

ROME -- Italy's caretaker government has authorized authorities to move the wrecked Costa Concordia cruise ship to the nearest port, Piombino in Tuscany, to be disassembled.

Tuscan President Enrico Rossi welcomed Friday's decision, saying Piombino is the most economical and environmentally sound choice because of its proximity.

However, a center-left lawmaker said the choice could delay the removal of the wreck until next year because of needed port upgrades.
 ::snipping2::
Italy's civil protection agency is looking at September as the likely date to move the wreck.
