Hikers find human head in LA's Hollywood Hills
Associated Press – 13 hrs ago....Email

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hikers in the Hollywood Hills found a human head in a plastic bag Tuesday when two of their dogs began playing with the object, Los Angeles police said

The women made the discovery on a popular trail below the Hollywood sign at about 3:45 p.m., police said.

"Two of the dogs began to play with the bag and what appeared to be an object. While the dogs were playing with it, at some point the object came out of the bag and they discovered that it was a head — a severed head," Sgt. Mitzi Fierro told KCAL-TV. The bag was visible from the trail, she said.

The head was believed to be a male, Fierro said, and didn't appear to have been in the area for long.

"There's not a lot of signs of decomposition yet," she said.

LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles police looked for more human body parts Wednesday after searchers discovered two hands and two feet in the same area of a park where dog walkers found a severed human head inside a plastic bag.

The first hand was found as dozens of officers and homicide investigators combed the brush along a winding trail in the Hollywood Hills. A coroner's cadaver dog came upon it about 50 yards from where the head was discovered on Tuesday afternoon, the Los Angeles Times () reported. http://lat.ms/xWFSjT

The second hand and both feet were found nearby later Wednesday afternoon. No details were immediately available on the condition of the body parts.

The remains were believed to belong to the same man, but police were working to confirm that through testing.

Victim IDed In Hollywood Body Parts Case
January 21, 2012

NewsCore) - The man whose head, hands and feet were found this week under the famed Hollywood sign has been identified, with police sources confirming to the Los Angeles Times the dead man was 66-year-old Hervey Medellin.

Medellin was a Los Angeles resident who lived close to where his remains were found and was formerly an employee of Mexicana Airlines, a friend told the Times.

Earlier Friday police said they had ended a search for more body parts in Bronson Canyon, a popular hiking trail in the Hollywood Hills.

No arrests have been made in the grim case, though a person of interest was detained and questioned Thursday in connection with the investigation, KTTV reported. Police were looking to talk to at least one other man, sources close to the investigation told the Times.

According to the sources, Medellin lived with another person in a third-floor apartment in Hollywood.

Andrew Hill, who lives on the second floor of the apartment building, told the newspaper he heard a commotion on the floor above him in the early morning about three weeks ago. He said he heard furniture moving as well as screaming and yelling.

Investigators believe Medellin was killed elsewhere before his remains were dropped in Bronson Canyon.

Los Angeles County coroner officials said they were able to identify Medellin through fingerprints on one of his hands, which were found 50 yards away from the head on Wednesday by investigators and a cadaver-sniffing dog.

Friends told KCBS-TV that the Bronson Canyon area of Griffith Park where the body parts were found was one Medellin's favorite hiking spots.

Neighbor Andrew Hill, who lived in the apartment below Medellin, told the Los Angeles Times that he heard an angry, late-night scuffle in the victim’s apartment about three weeks ago.

Police are questioning at least one person in connection with the case, the Times said. No arrests have been made.

Hollywood severed head mystery solved with arrest, police say
March 10, 2014

Los Angeles (CNN) -- The discovery two years ago of a man's decapitated head near the Hollywood sign began a murder mystery that police now believed is solved.
Gabriel Campos-Martinez, 38, was charged Monday in the death of 66-year-old Hervey Medellin, whose head and several other body parts were found by a woman walking her dog in Hollywood's Griffith Park on January 17, 2012, according to the Los Angeles district attorney.
Campos-Martinez and Medellin shared a Hollywood apartment for about six months, Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Bobby Grace said.
A coroner concluded that Medellin had died as a result of asphyxiation and ruled the death a homicide, Grace said.
Investigators have not revealed a motive for the gruesome killing, which police believe occurred around December 27, 2011.
A murder charge was filed on Monday against Campos-Martinez, who was arrested in San Antonio, Texas, Sunday. He is being held on $1 million bail and awaiting an extradition hearing.
The dog walker whose golden retriever, Ollie, discovered the head near a trail below the Hollywood sign said she at first thought the head was a movie prop.
"Our assumption was that there was always people filming up there, and it was a prop," Lauren Kornberg said in 2012. "We walked down the ravine and got closer and realized it was a freshly severed human head."
Cadaver dogs eventually found several hands and feet -- but no torso -- in the wooded area, which is near the home of actor Brad Pitt.
