Facebook Page Looks for Those Who've Met Accused Barista Killer Israel Keyes
Also notes other unsolved murders in vicinity of Keyes's locations

August 15, 2012

ANCHORAGE - Family and friends of murdered teenager Samantha Koenig are turning to the internet to link the man police say killed her – Israel Keyes – to other crimes around the country.

But law enforcement fears a new Facebook page maybe doing more harm than good.

This Facebook page was set up late last month asking, “Have you ever met Israel Keyes?”

On it you'll find pictures – some released by police, some never seen before publicly – of the man police say kidnapped and killed Samantha Koenig on February first of this year.

And while the site does not accuse Keyes outright of other murders, it lists unsolved cases around the country, and puts Keyes’s whereabouts close to the scene of the crime.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said they are aware of the site. They wouldn't comment on camera, but did warn the group to be careful before accusing Keyes of crimes they have no evidence he committed.
 ::snipping2::
Keyes has been linked by law enforcement sources in Vermont to the murder of a couple there a year earlier, but he has not yet been charged in that case.

Koenig's alleged slayer, Keyes, is target of additional investigations
October 4, 2012

A court filing this week in the federal case against Israel Keyes, charged with abducting and killing 18-year-old Samantha Koenig in February, indicates Keyes is the subject of other criminal investigations.

Keyes' lawyers complained in the Wednesday status report to a federal judge that, against their objections, prosecutors have had repeated contact with Keyes, 34. They also wrote that the prosecutors have failed to talk to them about additional criminal allegations, apparently not filed yet.

"The defense understands from the government that Mr. Keyes is being investigated on other matters," the court-appointed defense lawyers wrote. "Because of this, the defense must be made fully aware of other criminal investigations and allegations in order to properly advise Mr. Keyes; however, the government has yet to provide defense counsel with discovery (evidence) related to these matters."

Keyes' lawyers declined to comment on the status report Thursday.

Citing anonymous sources, Vermont TV station WCAX in July said Keyes is the "prime suspect" in the 2011 disappearance of a husband and wife living in Essex, Vermont.

After months of uncertainty about what happened to the couple, Bill and Lorraine Currier, federal prosecutors said in July that a person "in custody in another state" forced the Curriers from their home and killed them. The Vermont authorities refused to tell reporters the suspect's name or the state in which he or she is held.

There have been no new charges filed against Keyes since he was indicted for Koenig's kidnapping and murder, a crime punishable by death.

Anchorage police spent $413,186 investigating Koenig homicide
October 19, 2012

Anchorage Police said Thursday the cost to investigate the kidnapping and killing of Samantha Koenig cost the department more than $400,000.

KTUU reports that the department spent $413,186 in overtime to investigate the disappearance of the 19-year-old Anchorage barista who was abducted Feb. 1. That's dozens of times more expensive than the average homicide, which generally costs between $8,000 and $10,000 in overtime.

Police Chief Mark Mew told KTUU the case was more expensive because police believed Koenig could be alive. “We thought it was a homicide that could occur if we didn’t act quickly and work the case hard,” Mew told KTUU.

Mew also noted there was an additional $300,000 loss in ticket revenue because the traffic unit also worked on the case.

For months, friends and family remained hopeful Koenig would be found alive, posting flyers around town and offering a generous reward for any information on her disappearance. Two months after being abducted from the coffee stand she worked, Koenig's body was found in Matanuska Lake outside of Wasilla.

Israel Keyes, a 34-year-old Anchorage carpenter, has been charged in her kidnapping, resulting in death. A jury trial is scheduled to begin in March.

Police, FBI revisit Israel Keyes house
October 23, 2012

ANCHORAGE — Federal agents and city crime scene investigators on Tuesday closed the quiet dead-end street in West Anchorage where Israel Keyes lived prior to his alleged February abduction and slaying of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig, scouring the home and property for nearly 12 hours.

It is the third search at the light-blue home on Spurr Lane, in the Turnagain neighborhood, since Texas authorities arrested Keyes, 34, in March. An FBI spokesman and a federal prosecutor on the Keyes case both refused to say what triggered Tuesday's flurry of activity at the home. Neither would comment on what agents were looking for, or what they found.

"All I can say is the APD and FBI are executing a federal search warrant," said FBI spokesman Eric Gonzalez.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Feldis said the warrant was sealed. Feldis would not say when prosecutors filed for the warrant. Such warrants must be executed within 10 days of a judge approving them, Feldis said.
 ::snipping2::
Neighbors said Keyes lived at the home with his girlfriend, Kimberly Anderson, who is listed in property records as its owner. The couple mostly kept to themselves. Anderson has continued to live in the home, but Keyes' 10- or 11-year-old daughter hasn't been seen there since her father's arrest, neighbors said.

Keyes has been jailed since March 15.
 ::snipping2::

On March 13, six weeks after Koenig's disappearance, the authorities caught up with Keyes in Lufkin, Texas. He was arrested after a traffic stop for speeding -- though federal investigators were already on his trail, according to a charging document -- and he was soon brought back to Alaska.

Just after the arrest in Texas, police wearing helmets and body armor and carrying shotguns swarmed the Spurr Lane house, serving their first search warrant there. Among other evidence hauled away, the investigators took a trailer used for Keyes' one-man carpentry business, Keyes Construction.

Two weeks later, on March 30, police and federal agents again executed a search warrant at the house and property. With a rented forklift and flat-bed truck, they seized a shed and drove it to FBI headquarters downtown.

A dive team recovered Koenig's body April 2.

 ::snipping2::

Many details of the investigation of Koenig's abduction and death -- including any connection of the shed with the case and what led the authorities to Matanuska Lake -- have never been made public.

Earlier this month, a court filing by prosecutors in the federal case against Keyes suggested he is the subject of other criminal investigations. No details were disclosed. Citing anonymous sources, a Vermont TV station reported in July that Keyes was the "prime suspect" in the 2011 disappearance of a husband and wife in Essex, Vermont.

Israel Keyes’ New York Property Searched While Authorities Executed Search Warrant in Anchorage
Accused killer of Samantha Koenig may be suspect in Lower 48 murders

October 25, 2012

CONSTABLE, N.Y. - As FBI and Anchorage police armed with metal detectors searched around the home Israel Keyes lived in before his arrest, another search was going on thousands of miles away.
CBS 11 News has learned New York state police and the FBI were also searching a piece of property Keyes owns in upstate New York.
 ::snipping2::
The search in New York took place at the same time FBI and Anchorage police were executing a search warrant at the Turnagain home Keyes lived in.
That warrant is sealed and the U.S. Attorney's office will not say what they were looking for or whether they found anything.
KTVA also asked Kevin Feldis of the U.S. Attorney’s Alaska office about the New York search, but Feldis said he couldn’t comment.
Keyes is facing a number of charges, including kidnapping resulting in death, for Samantha Koenig's murder, and prosecutors have to decide by the end of the year if they will seek the death penalty.
Right now Keyes is still behind bars here in Anchorage.
He is scheduled to go on trial March 11 of next year.

Jury trial set for Alaska man accused of killing coffee barista
November 13, 2012

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -
The jury trial for the Alaska man accused of kidnapping and killing an 18-year-old Anchorage coffee barista in February has been set for March 11, 2013 in the U.S. District Court's Alaska District. Samantha Koenig's body was recovered in a lake north of Anchorage on April 2.

Israel Keyes, the prime suspect in the case, was arrested in Lufkin near the Cotton Patch Cafe on U.S. Highway 59 on 13 March. He was indicted and charged with kidnapping that led to the death of Koenig, who was last seen being led away from the coffee stand by an armed man on Feb. 1. Keyes was also charged with receipt and possession of ransom money and fraud with an access device.

The federal charge of kidnapping resulting in death carries a possible death sentence. In the first pretrial scheduling order, the U.S. Attorney indicated that the length of time between Keyes' indictment and his jury trial is designed to give the Department of Justice time to decide whether or not to seek the death penalty in the case.

"The court believes that this schedule allows reasonable time for counsel for the parties to discharge their respective duties with regard to the question of whether the death penalty should be sought, given due regard to the factual complexity of the case," the motion stated.

According to the Anchorage Police Department, Keyes was the only person of interest in Koenig's disappearance. Keyes was accused of using a bank card that didn't belong to Koenig, and he has been held in jail since pleading not guilty to the fraud charge on March 27.

Investigators believe Samantha died within hours of her abduction," Anchorage Police Chief Mark Mew told the Associated Press at the time.

Police released few details of the investigation or Keyes' connection to the case.

"Investigators further believe the person responsible for Samantha's death acted alone, and we are confident that we have that person in custody," Mew said at the time, not even mentioning Keyes by name.

Well, my only regret with Israel Keyes's passing is, now we may never find out if there were other victims, beyond Samantha Koenig and possibly Bill and Lorraine Currier.

Man Charged in Barista Death Linked to 7 Killings
December 3, 2012

A man charged in the death of an Alaska barista has killed himself, and authorities said Sunday they had linked him to at least seven other possible slayings in three other states.

Israel Keyes was found dead in his Anchorage jail cell Sunday morning. He died of an apparent suicide, U.S. Attorney Karen Loeffler told reporters.

Keyes was facing a March trial in federal court for the murder of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig, who was abducted from an Anchorage coffee kiosk last February. He was later arrested in Texas after using the victim's debit card.

Keyes confessed to killing Koenig, as well as killing Bill and Lorraine Currier of Essex, Vt., Anchorage police chief Mark Mew said.

The bodies of the Curriers have never been found. They were last seen leaving their jobs on June 8, 2011. Co-workers reported them missing the next day.

Keyes also indicated he killed four others in Washington state and one person in New York state, but did not give the victims' names, authorities said.
 ::snipping2::
Koenig's family said there was no apparent previous connection between the teen and the suspect. Reached by phone Sunday, Koenig's father, James Koenig declined to comment on Keyes' death.

Authorities in Vermont have been working with investigators in Alaska since April on the Currier case, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Vermont said in statement Sunday.

Investigators have determined that the couple's home was entered forcibly, and that there was evidence of a possible struggle.

Their car was stolen and was recovered several days after their disappearance at an apartment complex about three-quarters of a mile away from their home.

Keyes was thorough and methodical in disposing victims, authorities said Sunday at a hastily assembled press conference that included the FBI, U.S. Attorney's office and Anchorage police. Only Koenig's body has been recovered.

He didn't have a clear pattern in victims, who ranged widely in age, authorities said. Money appeared to be just a partial motive.

Authorities say they may never know the full extent of Keyes' crimes because he parsed out only a little information at a time, withholding names and locations of most of his victims.

There may be victims in other states as well besides the four states noted by Keyes, FBI Special Agent in Charge Mary Rook said.

 ..FBI: Murder suspect commits suicide in Alaska after confessing to East Coast killings

Israel Keyes charged with kidnapping, killing Anchorage barista Israel Keyes is dead.

The 34-year-old contractor who'd been indicted for kidnapping and murdering an 18-year-old Anchorage barista, killed himself Sunday morning, according to Alaska officials, who announced his death at a press conference hastily arranged by the U.S. Attorneys Office for Alaska.

Keyes committed suicide after he'd admitted to killing a Vermont couple who disappeared in June 2011.

But at the press conference Sunday afternoon, an official with the FBI said that based on a federal investigation there was reason to believe Keyes had been a serial killer and bank robber, with murder victims in New York and Washington state along with the Vermont couple, Bill and Lorraine Currier.

Alaska slaying suspect kills himself; officials link him to more
December 2, 2012

A man suspected of kidnapping and killing an Anchorage barista committed suicide in jail Sunday, according to police, who said he could be linked to seven other slayings.

Israel Keyes, 34, an Anchorage construction worker, had been accused of kidnapping, killing and hiding the body of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig in a frozen lake in February. Authorities did not say how he killed himself.

According to a federal indictment, Keyes killed Koenig but tried to make it appear that she was still alive. He used her phone to send text messages demanding that ransom be sent to the account of a stolen debit card, which he had taken from a vehicle used by Koenig, the indictment said. He obtained the PIN number from her, scratched it onto the card, and made withdrawals across the U.S. Southwest, the indictment said. He was arrested in Texas on March 13.

During a hearing in Anchorage in May, Koenig tried to escape from the courtroom, breaking out of his restraints and jumping a rail leading to a spectator gallery. Officers shocked him with a stun gun and restrained him.

Even after the brazen escape attempt, Keyes still spoke with investigators, officials revealed at a news conference Sunday.

Officials said that they had spent dozens of hours interviewing Keyes since his arrest and that he had disclosed information in increments. Investigators said they had spoken with him as recently as Thursday, the Anchorage Daily News reported.
 ::snipping2::
Michelle Tasker, a spokeswoman for the Koenig family, told KTUU Channel 2 News on Sunday that the family was disappointed by Keyes' suicide. "We would've obviously liked for him to have gone in front of a jury of his peers and answer for what he's been accused of doing," Tasker said. "He did an injustice again to Samantha."

I agree KittyMom and goodnmad, COWARD.

Israel Keyes was a serial killer, so I'm not surprised he didn't have much of a conscience in regard to giving consideration to the family and friends of his murdered victims.  I've read how he murdered Bill and Lorraine Currier, which included chasing Lorraine down after she tried to escape, and then raping and strangling her and shooting her husband Bill who also tried to escape.  Israel Keyes was evil and calculating.  He held a gun to Samantha Koenig, made her walk out to her truck and he got her debit card and pin, killed her, cut a hole in the ice and disposed of her.  And then he used her debit card.  He tried to let her Dad think she was still alive and tried to exact ransom money for her to be put into her bank account.  Cold, calculating and evil.  And we don't and may never know how many other victims there are or their names.  I just don't think he cared at all about his victims or their families.

I wonder about the lady he lived with, Kimberly Anderson. I haven't seen anything yet in the media to indicate she knew anything about what Israel was doing.  It must be really frightening for her to know she lived with a serial killer.   And I wonder about his daughter, an innocent child.  I haven't read anything about where she is etc., but it has to be just terrible for her.  JMHO

Alleged serial killer’s claim of 4 Washington state victims is being investigated
December 3, 2012

Before killing himself in an Anchorage jail cell over the weekend, suspected murderer Israel Keyes claimed he had killed four people in Washington and others around the country.

Frank Harrill, the FBI’s senior supervisory agent in Spokane, said this morning that there is a “very active” investigation into Keyes’ statements to Anchorage authorities.

Drivers license and other data show Keyes, 34, had addresses in Colville in Stevens County and Neah Bay in Clallam County. A Neah Bay post-office box was in Keyes’ name as recently as 2008, according to records.

According to military records, Keyes served in the Army from July 1998 to July 2001. He was stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord beginning in 1998.

It doesn’t appear that Keyes had a felony record in Washington state, but was cited for driving with a suspended license in Thurston County in January 2002.

Harrill, however, said at this point the investigation has not focused on specific victims, but rather is looking at known homicides and missing persons and comparing them to the information Keyes has given investigators in Alaska.

“We are working very closely with Anchorage and with our local partners here,” said Harrill, who declined to offer specifics.

Ayn Dietrich, the spokeswoman for the FBI’s Seattle office, said agents here have been looking into information from Keyes “for the past several months.

“We are pursuing all leads on possible victims,” she said.
