Good to see you again akmom!  Thank you for the update. I got chills reading about Keyes's abduction of Samantha.  She must have been so scared!  Keyes was one bold, evil dude to break back into the coffee stand to get Samantha's cell, and to go to the house she shared with her boyfriend and broke into the truck there to get her debit card.

I wonder how long Keyes could have gone on killing people if he hadn't gotten caught this time?  The article indicates he broke his own rule by murdering someone in the town he lived in.  It was to be his undoing.

Alaska Serial Killer Committed Suicide With Hidden Razor and Bedding

Serial killer Israel Keyes committed suicide in his Alaska jail cell by embedding a disposable razor blade into a pencil and slitting his wrist and using bedding material to strangle himself, the FBI said today.

Keyes, 34, left behind "crumpled, blood soaked paper" with writing on the pages.

Keyes' death came as he was slowly confessing to a string of methodically planned murders that spanned the country. He had admitted to eight murders at the time of his suicide, but had yet to tell investigators the identities of all his victims and left police wondering how many more victims there may have been.

The suicide occurred while Keyes was locked alone in a cell after 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 1. His body was discovered the next morning at 5:57 a.m., the FBI said.

He used a weapon he had apparently constructed by embedding a blade from a disposable razor into a pencil. He slashed his left wrist with the razor, and then used a strip of bedding to strangle himself.

"There is no indication of any criminal involvement from other persons," according to the FBI in Anchorage. "Pages of crumpled, blood soaked paper that appeared to have writing on them were recovered from the cell."

The papers have been handed over to the FBI for laboratory processing.

The serial killer whose victims included Bill and Lorraine Currier of Essex buried a murder kit in the woods on the banks of the Winooski River in spring 2009, then dug up the cache two years later and used the weapons in the Vermont slayings, the FBI says.

After Israel Keyes, 34, was arrested in March on charges related to an Alaska woman’s murder, he confessed to killing the Curriers and used an online map to give the FBI precise coordinates of the spot in Essex where he hid a trove of weapons and supplies, including ammunition, investigators in Anchorage told the Burlington Free Press on Thursday.

Serial killer Israel Keyes' capture was his own undoing. It was the meticulous murderer's loss of control and violation of his own careful rules of murder that ended years of traveling to kill for fun.

When Keyes, 34, approached an Anchorage coffee stand Feb. 1, he told himself that if the person working inside did not have her own car, he would only rob the place and leave.

But when he approached and found teenage barista Samantha Koenig by herself, he couldn't help himself, Keyes told police. He dragged her out, into his own car, raped her, strangled her and was eventually arrested for her murder.

"In prior cases, he had enough self-control to walk away from it, to not commit the kidnapping, to not commit the abduction and with Samantha he didn't," Anchorage homicide Det. Monique Doll said Monday. "He broke his own rule. He had drawn his line in the sand and he couldn't help himself, he said. He took her anyway."

Authorities also released new audio from interrogations with Keyes. In both clips, he described failed plans to kill other Alaskans from April and May 2011.

In one case, he had staked out a park where a young couple were in a car. The assassination was interrupted by an Anchorage police officer who showed up to tell the couple the park was closed.
It could have got ugly, but fortunately for the cop guy..." Keyes said before chuckling, "his backup showed up. I mean, APD is really good. They're really good, like all by the book and stuff. That's about the time I decided to get a scanner because I almost got myself into a lot of trouble on that one."

That would not be Keyes' last close call.

After he abducted, raped and dismembered Koenig, he took off to the southern U.S. with her debit card, which he used at several ATMs before being caught in Texas. Authorities said Keyes knew the risk he was running, but wanted to fulfill a fantasy of executing a ransom where the money was deposited into a debit account he would use.

"Using her debit card was part of his fantasy and it was something that he had thought about for a long time," Doll said. "He had also thought about how he was going to cloak it, how he was going to escape law enforcement. He wasn't a stupid man."

"He had understood that a debit card and a debit card usage is a very easy way for us to track somebody's movement, but...that was part of his fantasy that he wanted to fulfill," she said.

Anchorage homicide Detective Monique Doll says Keyes abducted 18-year-old Samantha Koenig at the coffee stand where she worked and waited in the dark structure for the arrival of Koenig's boyfriend, who was picking her up.

Doll says Keyes changed his mind for some reason and left with Koenig.

The FBI also released details about the death of an Alaska barista that Keyes was about to be tried for.

Investigators said Keyes sexually assaulted and killed 18-year-old Samantha Koenig the day after he abducted her in February.

Keyes told authorities he then left the woman's body in toolshed for two weeks while he went on a cruise.

Keyes dismembered the woman's body after he returned from the cruise, and disposed of it in a frozen lake north of Anchorage, the FBI said in a release.

Keyes, 34, was arrested in Koenig's death in March in Texas.

His body was found in his Anchorage jail cell Sunday after he apparently killed himself.

Also Tuesday, authorities released video footage of Keyes abducting Koenig, caught by a surveillance camera.

In the video, a man identified as Keyes wears a black mask with eye holes as he climbs through the window of an Anchorage coffee kiosk.

Koenig is seen putting her hands up several times before Keyes leads her out. Police say Koenig was killed hours later. Her body was recovered from the lake in April.

Keyes had faced a March trial in the killing.

A serial killer's recent suicide has prompted federal prosecutors to seek dismissal of charges in the slaying of an Alaska barista.

Prosecutors in Anchorage said in a motion filed this week that the indictment against Israel Keyes "is abated by his death" by law.

A federal magistrate recommends granting the motion and has forwarded it to the judge assigned to the case against Keyes, who confessed to the February murder of 18-year-old barista Samantha Koenig in Anchorage, as well as others across the country.

SEATTLE – The FBI on Tuesday released a video clip of an Alaska jail interview with serial killer Israel Keyes, who said he had randomly chosen and killed as many as eight people across the country. In it, he explained how he found his victims.

In a 40-second video clip recorded July 10, Keyes explains that he preferred to let his victims come to him in an isolated area far away from where he lived.

“If I was smart, I would do it, I would let them come to me in a remote area,” Keyes said. “I would go to a remote area that’s not anywhere near where you live but that other people go to, as well. You might not get exactly what you’re (looking for in a victim) … there’s not much to choose from, in a matter of speaking, but there’s also no witnesses, really. There’s nobody else around.”
 
Details about the kidnapping and slaying of Anchorage barista Samantha Koenig were also released in the hope the additional information will help investigations of other murders committed by Keyes
