I've been following this since it was reported last week. Not sure what to think. I hope she is found safe.

Miramar—
Volunteers, friends and family members launched a massive search Sunday for a Miramar teenager who has been missing since Wednesday afternoon.

Naketa Leiba, 17, was last seen getting off her school bus near the 6800 block of Southwest 34th Street in Miramar.

More than 50 people, including volunteers from the Guardian Angels organization, showed up Sunday morning at Annabel C. Perry Elementary School, at 6850 SW 34th St., where Leiba went missing.

The day she vanished, Naketa Leiba called her mother, a substitute teacher in Broward County, for a ride home. But Sharon Leiba said her school was on a security lockdown and she couldn't leave. Naketa Leiba said she would probably walk home.

"When I got home at 4:25 and she wasn't there I called her. She answered and said, 'I'm on my way,'" Leiba said. "But then there was a crack on the phone, as if the phone was dropped. I called her again and nothing."

Naketa Leiba told her parents that between August and November, a man who appeared to be in his 60s would call out to her from an older-model Toyota Camry as she got off the school bus. He followed her, asking for her name and offering a ride.

The family told police and the episodes stopped after a male friend began walking home with Leiba, her mother said. She worries that the man might have something to do with her daughter's disappearance.

This girl was being stalked.  Did LE ever make contact with the perp?  Did anyone get his tag number or a cell phone photo?  You find that guy, I'd bet you find Naketa.

FOUND SAFE

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/broward/miramar/fl-naketa-leiba-found-safe-20120208,0,6661642.story

Sun Sentinel

4:24 a.m. EST, February 8, 2012
Naketa Leiba, the Miramar teen who has been the subject of a massive search led by family, friends and others since she went missing seven days ago, was found unharmed, police announced early Wednesday.

She had run away, authorities said.

According to police, the investigation led detectives to an apartment near the 8400 block of Sherman Circle in Miramar where Leiba, 17, had been staying with a friend.

She voluntarily gave a sworn statement to police saying that she ran away from home, was not coerced or held against her will, police said.

Since being located, Leiba has been reunited with her parents, according to police.

Leiba's worried parents had repeatedly expressed their belief that Naketa was not a runaway and was likely being held against her will.

As recently as Tuesday, her parents continued their effort to find Naketa – leading a prayer circle before distributing fliers and making another broadcast appeal for the safe return of their daughter.

Police said they tracked Naketa to the apartment Tuesday night after obtaining an address linked to a cellphone Naketa used after her disappearance.

She had used the cellphone the day after she disappeared to phone her mother and tell her that she left home, police said. Don't go searching for me, the girl told her mother, according to police.

Her mother told police about her daughter's call, Rues said.

But police at the time still hadn't confirmed she was runaway, Rues said. What if the girl was being held against her will and forced to make such a call? Police told Naketa's parents not to discuss such investigative details publicly, Rues said.

"There was information that we couldn't release at the time, because we feared it would jeopardize the investigation and cause her to go deeper into hiding," Rues said. "A lot of runaways end up in the wrong hands."

During their inquiry, police found several things that led them to suspect Naketa ran away: A domestic incident at the home last year, Naketa discussing her life through her Twitter account, and no one reporting any suspicious activity around the time she disappeared.

Also, certain details weren't disclosed to police by the parents, Rues said. Broward court records show that the parents divorced in late January.

"There are a lot of things that we were unaware of that could have potentially changed the scope of the investigation," Rues said.

Still, no charge was pending against the parents, Rues said. They all along had the same goal as police, which was "to bring her back safely," Rues said.

Detectives said they found three guns and 211 rounds of ammunition in the apartment where Naketa Leiba was found, and they said the items belonged to McCurvin. Convicted felons cannot possess guns because it is a violation of their probation, police said.

Mother of teen who vanished defends use of public money

MIRAMAR — The family of a 17-year-old girl who disappeared for six days found themselves facing public criticism on Thursday over whether they should pick up the tab for the extensive police investigation — its cost was estimated in the tens of thousands of dollars.

The girl's mother, Sharon Leiba, said she, too, is a taxpayer and that such public funds should go toward ensuring the safety of all endangered children. She said she still believes her child, Naketa Leiba, was held against her will, and she accused police of coercing the girl to say she was a runaway after she was found.

In addition, at least four detectives hunted for the 17-year-old. Rues said, "A tremendous amount of effort went into this case. We're talking about hundreds and hundreds of staff hours, numerous detectives, IT staff, crime analysts." It appears as though Naketa Leiba was not the child her mother made her out to be.

The 17-year-old had skipped school repeatedly, and police were called to her home on Feb. 13 last year, when she broke out of her bedroom window and came back home drunk. The teen reportedly kept company with 29-year-old Mario McCurvin at the apartment where she was found. McKurvin is a former cocaine trafficker who was recently charged with illegal possession of three guns and 211 rounds of ammunition. (Copyright 2012 by Sunbeam Television Corp. All Rights Reserved. Okay.  Those parents need to face charges.  Then, LE needs to sit all three of them down and review every missing child case that the state of Florida ever had.  Show them autopsy photos, court proceedings, all documents, everything.  Let them see what a REAL missing child case looks like.  Then make them sit while the parents of Adam Walsh, Carlie Brucia, & Jessica Lunsford.  They wasted valuable resources that real missing people need.  Shame on them.

I agree with you Kitty Mom!

Can you imagine, LE found her Twitter account?  NL's twitter posts, cleared the up the mystery for LE.

The detectives should have looked into socal networks, before putting in tens of thousand of dollars, in a search.

Mom's "story" distracted four detectives (from other valuable cases) so she could win a power-struggle, over her daughter.

This is just in such bad taste, scewing around with people, for her own personal power, over her teenager.

My opinions.

And the mother is a substitute teacher.  I wouldn't want her anywhere near my kids. Heck, I don't want her anywhere around me  .  TPTB in Florida should consider revoking her teaching license.
