Hearing on extradition Van der Sloot

BACKGROUND - Many Peruvians still find that 28 years in prison is far too low for Joran van der Sloot, who in January was sentenced for the murder of Stephany Flores.

They would sometimes be at their beck and call, because the case Van der Sloot seems again to get a sequel. Today, in Piedras Gordas prison in Lima the hearing on the possible extradition of the 24-year-old Dutchman to the United States.

 ::snipping2::

Extradition to U.S.
The U.S. authorities have never made a secret of Van der Sloot that they want to try on our own soil. According to lawyer Jose Luis Jimenez, who stood by the Dutch during his trial, chances are it comes to extradition. "There is an initial agreement, although there are still a few elements of the application to be negotiated," says Jimenez, "but I consider it likely that the extradition is coming."

Complicated process
In the meantime, will there be a complicated process. Van der Sloot is appealing against his imprisonment, and this procedure must first be settled. The Peruvian Supreme Court probably affords more definite about this month. Only then can the American request to consider, first by the Supreme Court and a number of committees, and the final decision lies with the Peruvian Cabinet.

If the born Arnhem extradited, he will travel to the U.S. temporarily for trial in Alabama, which may take several months. Then he must first return to Peru to serve his sentence to sit for him in the U.S. ends up behind bars again. If he is in the extortion trial is convicted, he can get up to 25 years.

Holloway
In the most extreme case, Van der Sloot so only very old at liberty to come. Even then, his problems have not yet be over. The investigation into the disappearance of Natalee Holloway may still, Van der Sloot is also in that case is still the prime suspect.

What are the odds Joran is in the USA at the same time the kalpoe- Dr Phil case possibly starts????? How delicious!!

Joran and his lawyer sound a lot like Ber Rabbit...."Please, don't throw me in the
briar patch."   I think Joran is just itching for a nice vacation in a Alabamy jail.

Oh and a nice HOT Alabamy summer, at that.

You know the kind, mosquitoes, gnats, cicadas playing so loud that it is deafening, sun so high in the sky it burns your face.

Oh wait...he will be in a cell block.  Never mind.

I hope he does get slapped with a murder charge.  Mr. Poopy Pants all over again.

De Telegraaf reports that a Peruvian judge has visited Van der Sloot in prison. The paper says the Dutchman has no faith in the US justice system. According to de Volkskrant, the extradition request could take some months to process. The judge will make his recommendation to the Supreme Court. In the final analysis it will be the Justice Ministry in Lima which decides his fate.

I haven't heard where he would be kept while waiting for trial in the US but I hope it's here;

JORAN VAN DER SLOOT'S U.S. INDICTMENT at link

Joran van der Sloot Extradition: Once Peru Gets Rid Of Convicted Killer, U.S. Wants To Try Him For Murder, Expert Says
First Posted: 05/09/2012 5:10 pm Updated: 05/09/2012 5:19 pm

A Peruvian court will soon issue a decision on whether to allow convicted killer Joran van der Sloot to be extradited to the United States on charges of extortion in the case of Natalee Holloway.

The Dutchman may have far worse charges to fear, however, according to an international defense expert who said the extortion extradition is a ruse.

"With all the bad guys running around -- Al Qaeda and other international terrorists -- do you really think the U.S. is going to go after every guy who tries to extort money from a U.S. citizen? Absolutely not. The U.S. wants to get ahold of him and charge him with Holloway's murder," said Michael Griffith, senior partner at the International Legal Defense Counsel.
 ::snipping2::
While the confessions alone might not be enough, Griffith said authorities in the U.S. could target the Kalpoe brothers -- even though neither is considered a suspect or person of interest in the case.

"They could put pressure on them -- say to their lawyers, 'we want to serve you with a subpoena and we want their cooperation and we'll give them immunity from any charges. If you don't, we'll give their names to Interpol and have them added to the stop list.'"

Griffith added, "They could be the weak link in the chain. They were with him that night."

According to Peruvian media outlets, a decision on the indictment could take several weeks.

That Eric Robert Rudolph was tried in Birmingham by the US Dept of Justice for the abortion clinic bombing.  He was held somewhere in the Jefferson County Courthouse and then immediately transferred to that supermaxx prison.
