Joran Van Der Sloot’s Lawyer Says U.S. Extradition Inevitable

ABC News’ Joe Goldman in Lima, Peru, reports:

The extradition of Joran van der Sloot to the U.S. on charges of wire fraud and extortion in connection with the death of Natalee Holloway will likely take place this summer, his lawyer told ABC News today.

“The power of the United States will assure that Joran has to face a U.S. judge and I think the extradition will happen probably in two or three months,” Maximo Altez  said in an exclusve interview with ABC News.

7 years.  Who would have thought?  No justice for Natalee yet but at least he is in prison and there is hope he'll be forced to visit Birmingham.

Happy 7th anniversary monkey friends.

"That's where he belongs and now I'm able to focus and move onward in the help that I can do for others who have missing loved ones -- maybe they don't have recovery of their loved one's remains or they don't have a perpetrator in prison, so my hope is to shed enough light and to help them."

At least Joran is now behind bars.  He is terrified of coming to this country because we have the death penalty and he is afraid that some how some way he might end up facing something like that.  He is afraid of something being done to him like he as done to others.

Joran is in one of the worst prisons in the world, living in dread and fear.  Paulus is dead and in an early grave.  It feels like a kind of justice to me.

Oh, Anna...

How I always love to see that in writing. I have seen some pretty surly nappy bastards in my time on this earth. Paul made most of them look like Little League coaches and Boy Scout troop leaders. That lousy sob was one wormy rotten egg.

May Joran follow him. A coward dies 1,000 deaths - it's like dying nine hundred and ninety nine times, you are so miserable & tired by the end, that a little fuzzy tennis ball can knock you right over.

See ya - would not want to be ya, Van der sloot. ::justice2NJ::

I agree, with a slight exception.

Joran's greatest fear is Beth Holloway.  She has already proven many times just what she is capable of.

Loving Natalee
A Mother’s Testament of Hope and Faith
By Beth Holloway with Sunny Tillman

Excerpts

Page 30 -39:
The students say Natalee got into a silver or gray Honda with a young man who had befriended some of her classmates.  One of Jug’s nephews, Thomas, says he actually met the guy Natalee was seen leaving Carlos ‘n Charlie’s with.  Thomas says this young man’s name is “Gerran or Juran or something like that.”  The last information communicated from the students before they board their plane is that this Joran guy is a tourist from Holland.  And he is staying at the Holiday Inn.

It's around eleven o'clock on Memorial Monday night when the island comes into full view.

We land and the door opens.

We arrive at the Holiday Inn, get out of the van, and go inside the open-air lobby of the hotel.  The coach and DEA agent are to our left, and we turn to walk toward them.

Following our brief conversation, we all walk immediately to the front desk to ask about someone named Joran who is staying in the hotel and plays in the casino here.  The Holiday Inn night manager, Brenda, knows him by name.  "Oh! yes ... yes ... Joran.  He gambles in the Excelsior Casino here.  He likes to prey on young female tourists.  Especially the blonds.   He is tall.  Good-looking boy.  Like a Dutch marine."   My mouth drops wide open.  "Where is he from?" I ask her.  She replies.  "He lives in Aruba."  I stutter.  "He's ... he's not a tourist just here for the summer?"  "Non, non," she says.  It takes a few moments to absorb this information.  The supposed tourist who befriended some of Natalee's classmates and who told them he was staying at their hotel lied to them.  He isn't a tourist.  He isn't staying here.

Loving Natalee
A Mother’s Testament of Hope and Faith
By Beth Holloway with Sunny Tillman

Excerpts

Page 44 - 47:
Alberto and Claudio went to the location, looked over the fence, and there it was.  A silver-gray Honda with big tailpipes and fancy features, just as the students had described.  They wrote down the license plate number and address.

At Noord it takes almost half an hour to get uniformed officers to accompany us to the van der Sloot home.

The silver Honda is not there anymore.

The officers sound their horns and sirens for about five minutes before a man answers the door.  He is Joran’s father, Paulus van der Sloot.  He has his cell phone in his hand.  The police ask to see Joran.  Paulus responds that he isn’t home and calls his son to find out where he is.  He tells the police that Joran says he is in a poker tournament at the back of the casino at the Wyndham Hotel.

Again we load up, adding Paulus to this madcap possee riding in convoy with the police to the Wyndham.  The police lead the pack.

We arrive at the Wyndham, and the car barely stops rolling before I jump out …

I run to to the back where Joran told his father he would be and return to the front.  There is no sign of him.

I turn around to see Paulus on his cell phone again.  He tells us that his son is back at their house now.

Everybody is running and running to the cars.  Few Words are spoken.  We arrive to see people standing in front of the house.  They are Deepak Kalpoe and Joran van der Sloot.

Joran and Deepak have supposedly returned from a night of gambling at the Wyndham.  It’s about three o’clock in the morning.  It’s a school night.  They aren’t dressed as if they have been to a casino.  They are in grubby T-shirts and shorts.  I make a mental note that I will ask to see the casino footage from the Wyndham later on.  Just to see if they were really there tonight or, rather, this morning.

Page 121:  And finally we learn from the Wyndham Hotel manager that Joran and Deepak do not appear on their security videos at the time the two claimed to be at the poker tournament there – the same time we were stand in the van der Sloots’ front yard in the wee hours of May, 31.

There was a time I was under the impression that "intuition" and "hinky feelings" emerged out of a vacuum.  Now I am convinced otherwise.  There are clues ... clues that the mind may not immediately reveal but then a light bulb shines.

Beth's clues?  Natalee's mother shares in her book that she authored with Sunny Tillman ... the book entitled "Loving Natalee: A Mother’s Testament of Hope and Fait.".

"Tell me what's going on," I say in a voice much firmer than the one I usually hear coming from my mouth.

She simply says, "Natalee didn't show up this morning to get on the plane."

And instantly I know.  It's more than a mother's intuition.  It's certainty.  Something terrible has happened.  I have just answered the proverbial dreaded phone call that no mother or father every wants to receive.  The one we fear from the moment our children are born.  The one that changes a parent's life forever.

I wonder if Jason is related to Rene van Heyningen, the guy who was beheaded in the cemetery on the day Paulus was first interviewed as a witness.

HEYNINGEN, Rene Michel van   – partially decapitated man found at cemetery on 6-18-05. Rumored to run the incinerator at the Refinery. It is also reported that he ran the incinerator at Oduber Hospital.  Yesenia Castillo, his wife(?) is reportedly being held in KIA in conjunction with his murder.

Memorial Day - May 30, 2005

Hope Comes and Then Goes

Loving Natalee
A Mother’s Testament of Hope and Faith
By Beth Holloway with Sunny Tillman

Excerpts

Page 35 - 36:  We land, and the door opens.  The heat and the humidity hit me hard in the face even at this hour.  Like opening the oven door and getting that big hot blast.  The wind is whipping.  My hair is all over the place.  I can hardly see the steps to go down.  I soon learn this is how it always is here: very hot and very windy.  “Hellish” is the only word that comes to mind.

We walk a few feet into the processing area to show our passports and go through customs.  It's a small unimportant looking structure with a porch connected to the front of it.  The owner of the plane has arranged for "handlers" to meet us here to assist with customs and ground transportation, common practice when private planes arrive in Aruba.

An official-looking American woman in the processing area draws my attention.  Her badge identifies her as a U.S. Homeland Security Office representative, and I hone in on her like radar.  The sight of her is our fist real sign of hope.  I walk over to her and have to restrain myself from grabbing her by her lapels and pulling her into a hug to thank her for being here for us.  All the calls made to the FBI and the U.S. Embassy by Natalee's brother and our friends must have paid off.  That's why this official person is here to help us.  I get very close to her and begin to tell her about Natalee and what has happened.  Talking a mile a minute, I explain about Natalee's disappearance and our desperate situation.  I ask for her help in figuring out where to start and what to do.

She never changes her stance, remaining in an "at ease" position with her hands behind her back.  She has very little to say; volunteers no information.  The encouraging thoughts that lifted me when I first laid eyes on her are quickly extinuished as I learn that she is always here.  The Aruba airport is her post.  She isn't here for us.  She can't do a single thing to help Natalee.  She has no special powers.  No authority.

This is the first of hundreds of times along this impending tragic journey that hope would dissolve almost as quickly as it would appear.  It would wash over us like the tide, then ebb.  Hope comes, then goes.  But it's the constant waiting for the next wave to roll in, and reaching for each new sign of hope that will keep us going, as it brings with it the energy and encouragement needed to presson in our search for Natalee, even if only for a few moments at a time.

Prisons in Peru are ugly places, Alabama must have better conditions.
His friend Mary could visit him, Joe T could be the lawyer and visit him, Mary pays Taco.
But then, he wouldn't be able to have a big screen tv or be able to gamble and pay people to be his friends.

Hi Kat_Gram

The following article reveals why it would be beneficial for Joran to fight extradition to the States.

Janet

+++++

Joran Van der Sloot to Fight US Extradition from Peru
Published May 09, 2012

The prime suspect in the unsolved 2005 disappearance of American Natalee Holloway, Joran Van der Sloot, told a judge on Tuesday that he will fight extradition from Peru to the United States, where he faces extortion and wire fraud charges in connection with Holloway's disappearance.

Van der Sloot faces an indictment in the U.S. for allegedly accepting $25,000 in early 2010 in exchange for an unfulfilled promise to lead Holloway's mother's lawyer to the body after her disappearance in Aruba.

Judge Zenaida Vilca informed Van der Sloot of the U.S. extradition request during a closed door meeting at Piedras Gordas prison just north of Lima. The 24-year-old Dutchman told the judge he would fight extradition, his lawyer, Maximo Altez, said.

If he stays put, Van der Sloot could be released on parole after serving a third of his 28-year sentence for killing a Lima woman he met at a casino in May 2010, said Altez.  But if he were convicted in the U.S. he likely wouldn't qualify for early parole in Peru.

Under the U.S.-Peru extradition treaty he would be returned to Peru to finish out his sentence. Then, if he were convicted in the U.S., he would be sent there to serve the second sentence.

<snipped>

In an interview with ABC news, Altez stated his belief that in the end Van der Sloot will lose his fight to stay in Peru.

“The power of the United States will assure that Joran has to face a U.S. judge and I think the extradition will happen probably in two or three months,” he said

In my view, his most intense fear from the very beginning moments seven years ago, has been the thought of answering to a court in Alabama.   All else, has emanated from this ...   Sad

I agree, with a slight exception.

Joran's greatest fear is Beth Holloway.  She has already proven many times just what she is capable of.

And Bubba's a whole lot bigger and 'way tougher than Joran!

Yes, the death penalty in this country scares those born into countries without it terribly.  Since 9/11 there have been laws passed concerning U.S. citizens abroad that have not really been tested so much internationally.  They are still sort of murky as to how and when they apply.  Joran is right to be scared.  Extortion alone carries 25 years so there is no way he is going to see the outside again maybe ever in this lifetime.  Hard to live that long with his personality.
