Loving Natalee
A Mother’s Testament of Hope and Faith
By Beth Holloway

Page 145-146:
French Philosopher Pierre Teilhard De Chardin is quoted as saying, "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience." This intuitive and deep reflection of who we are and why we're here on this earth stays with me throughout the course of this tragedy. And it helps me make some sense out of the madness in this world. 9/11. War. The death and loss of children. A lot of people have a lot of pain to endure. And one person's life is no more important than another's. The philosopher's statement reminds me that we're just passing through on this human journey, that that is the hard part, and that there is a promise of more to come.
I think about the sermon delivered by Rabbi Jonathan Miller at Temple Emanu-El in Burmingham regarding Natalee's disappearance. He said,
"Hope is the belief that things can be made right again."
I agree. It may not be in this lifetime, but one day things will be made right. And my pain and the pain suffered by all people will end. I'd have no hope at all if I believed that this human existence was all there was.

ABC News’ Joe Goldman in Lima, Peru, reports:
The extradition of Joran van der Sloot to the U.S. on charges of wire fraud and extortion in connection with the death of Natalee Holloway will likely take place this summer, his lawyer told ABC News today.
“The power of the United States will assure that Joran has to face a U.S. judge and I think the extradition will happen probably in two or three months,” Maximo Altez said in an exclusve interview with ABC News.

Peru’s top court OKs Joran extradition to US
Published on 2 June 2012 - 5:21pm
Joran van der Sloot may, in due course, be extradited to the United States, Peru’s Supreme Court has ruled.
Mr Van der Sloot is currently serving a 28-year prison sentence in Peru for the murder of Stephany Flores, though an appeal against the ruling is still pending. He is wanted in the United States in connection with the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, who went missing in Aruba in 2005, and alleged attempts by the Dutchman to extort her mother.
Peru’s Supreme Court stipulated, however, that Mr Van der Sloot can only be extradited to the United States after serving his sentence. Peru’s government has yet to make a decision on the matter.

Excerpts
Page 35 - 36:
We land, and the door opens. The heat and the humidity hit me hard in the face even at this hour. Like opening the oven door and getting that big hot blast. The wind is whipping. My hair is all over the place. I can hardly see the steps to go down. I soon learn this is how it always is here: very hot and very windy. “Hellish” is the only word that comes to mind.
We walk a few feet into the processing area to show our passports and go through customs. It's a small unimportant looking structure with a porch connected to the front of it. The owner of the plane has arranged for "handlers" to meet us here to assist with customs and ground transportation, common practice when private planes arrive in Aruba.
An official-looking American woman in the processing area draws my attention. Her badge identifies her as a U.S. Homeland Security Office representative, and I hone in on her like radar. The sight of her is our fist real sign of hope. I walk over to her and have to restrain myself from grabbing her by her lapels and pulling her into a hug to thank her for being here for us. All the calls made to the FBI and the U.S. Embassy by Natalee's brother and our friends must have paid off. That's why this official person is here to help us. I get very close to her and begin to tell her about Natalee and what has happened. Talking a mile a minute, I explain about Natalee's disappearance and our desperate situation. I ask for her help in figuring out where to start and what to do.
She never changes her stance, remaining in an "at ease" position with her hands behind her back. She has very little to say; volunteers no information. The encouraging thoughts that lifted me when I first laid eyes on her are quickly extinuished as I learn that she is always here. The Aruba airport is her post. She isn't here for us. She can't do a single thing to help Natalee. She has no special powers. No authority.
This is the first of hundreds of times along this impending tragic journey that hope would dissolve almost as quickly as it would appear. It would wash over us like the tide, then ebb.
Hope comes, then goes
.
But it's the constant waiting for the next wave to roll in, and reaching for each new sign of hope that will keep us going, as it brings with it the energy and encouragement needed to presson in our search for Natalee, even if only for a few moments at a time.

If I understand correctly, if Joran is transferred now to the U. S. and is convicted of the crimes he's charged with; he would more than likely have to serve his entire sentence in Peru. He wouldn't be eligible to be released in the approximate 9 years that's been talked about in relation to his conviction for Stephany's murder. That's why IMO they don't want him transferred until he's "completed" his sentence in Peru.
But from what I understand from the article...maybe it's not over yet?
Can the government decide to extradite him now despite what the Supreme Court stipulated?

Joran Van der Sloot to Fight US Extradition from Peru
Published May 09, 2012
The prime suspect in the unsolved 2005 disappearance of American Natalee Holloway, Joran Van der Sloot, told a judge on Tuesday that he will fight extradition from Peru to the United States, where he faces extortion and wire fraud charges in connection with Holloway's disappearance
.
Van der Sloot faces an indictment in the U.S. for allegedly accepting $25,000 in early 2010 in exchange for an unfulfilled promise to lead Holloway's mother's lawyer to the body after her disappearance in Aruba.
Judge Zenaida Vilca informed Van der Sloot of the U.S. extradition request during a closed door meeting at Piedras Gordas prison just north of Lima. The 24-year-old Dutchman told the judge he would fight extradition, his lawyer, Maximo Altez, said.
If he stays put, Van der Sloot could be released on parole after serving a third of his 28-year sentence for killing a Lima woman he met at a casino in May 2010, said Altez. But if he were convicted in the U.S. he likely wouldn't qualify for early parole in Peru.
Under the U.S.-Peru extradition treaty he would be returned to Peru to finish out his sentence. Then, if he were convicted in the U.S., he would be sent there to serve the second sentence.
<snipped>
In an interview with ABC news, Altez stated his belief that in the end Van der Sloot will lose his fight to stay in Peru.
“The power of the United States will assure that Joran has to face a U.S. judge and I think the extradition will happen probably in two or three months,” he said

I am thinking that it would be prudent to extradite him here to Alabama to stand trial for extortion sooner, rather than later, due to time constraints involving all witnesses, etc. How the legal technicalities of the exchange process will evolve remains to be seen.
Best wait for an
official
announcement ... ?

The Tapes Play Out
Loving Natalee
A Mother’s Testament of Hope and Faith
By Beth Holloway with Sunny Tillman
Excerpts
Page 96 - 97:
Jug and I are in the hotel room only a few minutes when there is a knock on the door. A hotel employee says they have the video footage of the lobby from the night Natalee disappeared ready for me to look at downstairs. Immediately a second wind comes with this four o'clock news. We rush downstairs to a small room near the main front desk. There's no sign on the door, very nondescript. We're advised to go inside. Slowly I open the door. As it widens, the opening reveals police officials, one after the other after the other, a dozen or more of them standing around in this small room. At four o'clock in the morning. Waiting for us. There's a desk and computer screen. It's the security room.
The tapes play out.
The night passes, and Natalee never appears at the hotel where Joran and Deepak so elaborately demonstrated they left her. She never came back. She never got out of that car and stumbled and bumped her head like they told me.
There is silence in the little crowded room. Eventually the quiet is broken as police officers and detectives who witness the same evidence we do in the wee hours of Thursday morning begin to speak very softly, almost whispering to one another in Dutch and Papiamento. I don't know what they're saying, but they are very subdued.
The all see for themselves that Joran, Deepak, and Satish never brought Natalee back to the Holiday Inn
.

If Joran van der Sloot were not to qualify for credit reduction for good behavior which some believe would never happen ... then 28 years later implies many involved in the happenings encompassing the happenings leading up to the "sting" may not be available for testifying.
How old is John Kelly?
It appears the Peruvian justice system has given Joran van der Sloot a free pass in regards to standing trial for the extortion of Beth Holloway. Why? What happened to the U.S.-Peru extradition treaty?

I thought it was if he was convicted of a felonious crime in another country it would nullify the credit reduction and he would have to serve the full term in Peru.
Maybe the US can try him in absentia??!!
It's been done before!

I think you may be on to something..................................... or maybe the early interpretation of the Peruvian Supreme Court's statement is incorrect. Perhaps the US CAN try Joran now, but not actually serve any sentence until he has finished serving for his Peruvian crimes.

Could it be that Joran van der Sloot will qualify for for extradition to the Netherlands to serve his Peruvian sentence? Does the extradition agreement between the Netherlands and Holland include extortion charges? In other words ... would the Netherlands be compelled to extradite Joran to the US at the end of his Peruvian sentence?
The family of Natalee Holloway must be experiencing so many emotions in regards the underlying implications regarding unanswered questions encompassing todays decision by the Peruvian Supreme Court. It has been an ongoing roller coaster of hope and despair since May 30, 2005.

Hope comes, then goes. But it's the constant waiting for the next wave to roll in, and reaching for each new sign of hope that will keep us going, as it brings with it the energy and encouragement needed to press on in our search for Natalee, even if only for a few moments at a time.
Peru, Netherlands Agree Extradition Treaty
THE HAGUE, 14/05/11 - The Netherlands and Peru have agreed an extradition treaty. As a result, Joran van der Sloot may be able to serve his sentence in his own country.
Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal and his Peruvian opposite number Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde signed a treaty on the transfer of sentenced persons and the enforcement of criminal judgments on Thursday.
"The treaty allows residents of the Kingdom of the Netherlands who have been sentenced to prison by final and irrevocable judgment in Peru" to serve their sentence in the Netherlands, said Rosenthal
.
Peruvians who are in prison in the Netherlands are also entitled to invoke the treaty.
Both countries are under obligation to grant a detainee's request.
The treaty will enter into force as soon as both parliaments have approved it.
The two ministers discussed, among other things, human rights, cooperation in efforts to stop drug trafficking, promotion of mutual investment and knowledge exchange in the areas of water management and cooperation in judicial and defence matters.
The foreign ministry says there are currently 117 Dutch nationals in Peruvian prisons. In 113 cases, they have been convicted of a drugs offence. The most well-known Dutch prisoner is Joran van der Sloot, in jail for the murder of a Peruvian girl.
Van der Sloot's case is not yet concluded. Depending on the sentence his client receives, his lawyer Maximo Altez does plan to make use of the new regulation.
