Flores, Holloway families await van der Sloot's trial
1/13/2012

<snipped>

Stephany Flores’ family is still holding out hope they can convince the court to increase the charges to include a possible life sentence. Stephany’s father, Ricardo Flores, claims Van der Sloot has lived “like a king” while the Flores family mourns.

Prosecutor Miriam Castellares is asking for 30 years in prison, on charges of murder and simple theft; however, Flores’ family is asking the public prosecutor to amend the charges to “robbery followed by murder.”

According to Edwar Alvarez, the Flores family’s lawyer, with different charges Van der Sloot could receive life imprisonment.

"We aim to present evidence during the trial that will lead the prosecutor to change the classification of the crime, so that it becomes robbery followed by murder. This will not be 30 years in prison, but life imprisonment,” he told the Lima newspaper El Comercio.

Was Joran van der Sloot's guilty plea all about preventing the attorney of Stephany Flores' family from putting forth a case during a trial to raise the bar in regards to the prosecutor's charges ... the prosecutor's charges that implied a 28 year sentence rather than a life sentence ... a 28 year sentence that translated into less than 10 years.

Was appealing the sentence part of the plan prior to the the judge's ruling ... appealing the sentence with the anticipation of lowering the bar even further?

ISSUES WITH JANE VELEZ-MITCHELL
Joran Van Der Sloot Pleads Guilty to Murder
Aired January 11, 2012 - 19:00   ET

<snipped>

VELEZ-MITCHELL: I think he should get life, as does the family of Stephany Flores. But why does this all seem contrived and orchestrated to me? Why does this all feel like some kind of play where everybody knew what their role was today?

JON LEIBERMAN, INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER: Because it was, Jane. I mean, I`ve been doing this a long time and I`ve never seen somebody confess to a murder and manage to re-victimize another family while they`re confessing to the murder of another woman. It was sickening.

I mean, to use the words that he was persecuted and -- you know, by the Natalee Holloway attention that he got and that he was triggered to kill somebody because of the intense media scrutiny from Natalee Holloway in that case? That was absolutely sickening.

<snipped.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: All right. Last Friday Joran got in trouble for his courtroom antics and the judge had to tell him cut it out. Listen to this.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE (through translator): Will the defendant please stand up? Stand up. You are in a court of law. You have to behave appropriately. You have to sit appropriately.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Look at this guy. He is smiling, grinning from ear to ear today. And this is him last Friday yawning. He fell asleep at one point. There he is. Take a look at that. Yes, he`s having a nap in court. His future at stake. And he`s napping.

You`re charged with murder, Joran, and you can`t stay awake? And then the giggling, the laughing.

Yes, it was discussed prior to trial by many, including the defense, that Joran pleading guilty would prevent a trial and thus prevent the possibility that the prosecution could introduce evidence that would lead to greater charges.  Joran knew in advance that he could appeal the sentence but not his conviction if he plead guilty.  It was stated again during the trial by Joran and/or the defense attorney.

An oxymoron!

When the Peruvian Supreme Court's ruling is considered ... how would  a successful appeal of Joran's sentence result in an immediate extradiction?

Could it be the final decision of Peruvian Justice Minister and Cabinet is known but has not been revealed?.  In other words ... the Monkey Justice Train may be rolling into Birmingham sooner than later.

Van der Sloot's Extradition to US Must Wait
Mon Jun 4, 2012 9:46pm EDT

<snipped>

Joran van der Sloot's extradition to the United States will not happen until after he serves his sentence for murder in Peru, the country's highest court has ruled. That could be as long as 28 years.

But the decision by Peru's Supreme Court is not final, as Peru's justice minister and Cabinet must also approve it, van der Sloot's lawyer told the Associated Press.

Those rusty Dutch buggers just can`t keep their hands off that boy, can they?

It`s built in to their DNA.

As was learned, the Dutchman would have the advice of a private lawyer had been hired by diplomats from the embassy.

Joran van der Sloot - Peru makes evidence public
Published on : 7 June 2010 - 5:33pm

<snipped>

The foreign ministry is still considering whether it will give an official reaction to how the case is being handled. A spokesperson for the ministry told Radio Netherlands Worldwide: "I have asked at the ministry how we should deal with this."

Generally, the Netherlands never interferes with legal processes in other countries, but there may well be reason to protest in this case.

Van der Sloot remains jailed as murder investigation continues
June 6, 2010 9:39 p.m. EDT

<snipped>

Carlos Neyra, an official with the Peruvian National Police criminal investigation division, said van der Sloot, the sole suspect named in the case, has not been formally charged

Neyra added that van der Sloot now has a lawyer. The Netherlands Embassy says it is working with local authorities in the case, but it is not paying for a defense attorney.

The Embassy has told Peruvian authorities that it is not comfortable with the way van der Sloot has been presented to the media, Neyra said. The Peruvian interior minister is asking authorities not to talk about the case without his authorization.

Van der Sloot arrived Saturday at the Lima police headquarters. Handcuffed and wearing a protective vest, he was escorted through a news conference held by Peruvian authorities as photographers snapped photo after photo.

Yuck on Anita's comment, " and in a relationship with me".

I always thought the girl in the graduation photo was not the cousin.  Though similar in coloring and facial features, the cousin's face is too "old" looking.

I'm hoping the girl knows of the depravity in the vdS family and that Val has but a trace if any of it.  Val seems to have risen above the stigma of his famous family.  Maybe he is their "black sheep" if you know what I mean (like Marilyn was to the Herman Munster family ...LOL)
