There were rumours of this last Sept....hoping it isn't true this time.  Also rumours spread not long ago that Cher had died/not true

updated tonight

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, has died. She was 48.

Publicist Kristen Foster said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unclear.

 ::snipping2::

Among her hits were "How Will I Know," "Saving All My Love for You" and "I Will Always Love You." She won multiple Grammys including album and record of the year.

Her success carried her beyond music to movies like "The Bodyguard."

But by the end of her career, drug use took its toll as her record sales plummeted and her voice became raspy and hoarse.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Whitney Houston, who ruled as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died. She was 48.

I can't say I'm surprised but I'm sad.  She was such a wonderful singer before the drugs.  So sad.

She was suppose to perform tonight for Clive Davis' party at the Hilton in Los Angeles.  Such a shame.

Nut also started a thread for Whitney in "Music".  Klaas, do you want to merge the two threads?

Whitney Houston was to attend Clive Davis' party tonight
February 11, 2012

Whitney Houston was among the A-list performers planning to attend veteran music mogul Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party Saturday at the Beverly Hilton hotel, the see-and-be-seen event of the year.

Earlier this week, the 79-year-old Davis perused page after page of guest lists in a bungalow at the Beverly Hills Hotel, where he conducts business when he’s in the Los Angeles area. Among those Houston was expected to rub elbows with: Quincy Jones, Tony Bennett, Akon, Cee Lo Green, Miley Cyrus, Sean "Puffy" Combs, Jennifer Hudson, Jackson Browne, Elvis Costello and Diana Krall.

Whitney Houston
One of the most celebrated female singers of all time until her image as America's sweetheart was ravaged by drug use

guardian.co.uk, Saturday 11 February 2012 21.03 EST

 ::snipping2::
Houston was gospel-trained, but her voice also lent itself to R&B, pop and ballads, and she was adept at each style. It was a ballad that provided her biggest hit, a 1992 cover version of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You. Her melodramatic rendition, featuring one of her most powerful vocals, sold 12 million copies worldwide, making it one of the biggest singles of all time.

Her total record sales topped 170 million, putting her in an elite group of female superstars that included Mariah Carey and Celine Dion, both of whom were heavily influenced by her emotional, vibrato-laden style.

Houston often gravitated to dramatic songs with lyrics about triumphing over the odds, and has been credited with inventing the "pop diva" genre that has inspired singers to the present day. She was also the first black woman to break through the colour bar at the all-important MTV, which hitherto had played white artists almost exclusively. The station's heavy rotation of her videos made her a familiar face to Middle America, and her mix of glamour, talent and approachability made her an aspirational figure for millions of teenage girls, both black and white. A US magazine editor dubbed her "the first black America's sweetheart".

Whitney Houston's posthumous turn: As star of 'Sparkle'
February 11, 2012

The death of Whitney Houston at the age of 48 is a deep loss for the music world. But it also has reverberations in another artistic realm--the movies.

Houston had recently finished shooting "Sparkle," the remake of the 1976 Irene Cara film that, eerily, focuses on talented young musicians whose lives are ruined by addiction. Houston also served as an executive producer on the movie, acquiring rights to the original film more than a decade ago. The movie, shot this past fall and currently in post-production, is scheduled to be released in August. No word yet on any release-date changes; we're awaiting word from a producer.

Whitney Houston's death: 'No signs of foul play,' police say
February 11, 2012

Whitney Houston was found unresponsive in a room at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Saturday afternoon by paramedics who performed CPR for about 20 minutes before declaring the pop star dead.

Authorities said they don't have a cause of death.

"Nothing obvious at this time," Beverly Hills police Lt. Mark Rosen told reporters at a news conference. "No signs of foul play."

The Beverly Hills Fire Department said it was called to the hotel about 3:30 p.m. and Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m.

Houston, 48, was in the Los Angeles area for a musical tribute for music executive Clive Davis and had performed earlier this week.

Houston was planning to attend Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party Saturday at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

Sure sad to hear this...unfortunately it doesn't surprise me.  So much more for her if not for addiction.
