The authorities in the Turkish border town of Hatay said the suspect, identified only by his initials and a nickname, had been taken into custody on Sunday close to the southern border with Syria.

‘'Z.T., who is publicly known with his nickname ‘Laz Ziya’ and wanted as the murder suspect of the U.S. citizen Sarai Sierra, was caught by our security forces around 12:00 in Reyhanli township,” said a statement issued by the governor’s office in Hatay. “The person was handed over to legal authorities after his initial interrogation.”

After weeks of investigation, the Istanbul police focused on a homeless man who lived around the Old City wall ruins where Ms. Sierra’s body had been found as a possible suspect.

The police said a brother had provided a DNA sample that enabled them to link the homeless man to the killing.

By that point, the suspect, who collected used paper for a living, had left for Karabuk, a Black Sea town where his sister lived, the authorities said.

Ziya T. narrowly evaded a police raid of his family home in Karabuk and was later seen in Hatay, which has been the hub of Syrian opposition activities since the beginning of the conflict in Syria.

According to some reports in the Turkish media, the man had sought refuge from prosecution in Syria, and the Turkish police worked with rebel forces inside Syria to capture him. Those reports could not be immediately confirmed.

The authorities declined to provide details on how or precisely where Ziya T. had been captured.
