UPDATE 1-Tornadoes kill at least 28 in U.S. Midwest, South
By Susan Guyett
March 3, 2012

(Reuters) - Powerful tornadoes raked across a wide swath of the U.S. Midwest and South on Friday, killing at least 28 people in four states and bringing the death toll to at least 41 from a week of deadly late-winter storms.

The twisters splintered homes, damaged a prison and tossed around vehicles across the region, leaving at least 13 people dead in southern Indiana, another 12 in neighboring Kentucky, two more in Ohio, and one in Alabama, officials said. In all, the latest line of storms battered a band of states from Ohio and Indiana on southward to Alabama and Georgia.

Another possible storm-related death occurred in Henryville, Indiana, where television images showed homes and a school blown apart.

Violent storms spawn twisters in several states, killing 29; officials fear toll could rise
March 1, 2012

HENRYVILLE, Ind. — A string of violent storms scratched away small towns in Indiana and cut off rural communities in Kentucky as an early-season tornado outbreak killed nearly 30 people, and authorities feared the already ugly death toll would rise as daylight broke on Saturday’s search for survivors.

Massive thunderstorms, predicted by forecasters for days, threw off dozens of tornadoes as they raced Friday from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes. Twisters that crushed entire blocks of homes knocked out cellphones and landlines alike, ripped power lines from broken poles and tossed cars, school buses and tractor-trailers onto roadways made impassable by debris.

Indiana tornado destroys Marysville, Ind.
At least 27 dead across 3 states; Ky. governor declares state of emergency

March 3, 2012

At least 27 people were killed in Southern Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio on Friday when a series of fierce storms carved a path of destruction through the Midwest.

The National Weather Service estimated there could have been 10 or more tornadoes touch down in Indiana and Kentucky.

Kentucky declared a state of emergency, and Indiana officials said they were discussing that late Friday night. The weather service planned to survey parts of the Ohio today to determine the extent of the damage.

In Marysville, 10 miles north of Charlestown along Ind. 3, most of the several dozen homes that make up the town were destroyed.

"Marysville is completely gone," Clark County Sheriff's Maj. Chuck Adams said.

Last night was a nail biter.  I kept listening for the tornado sirens.  I hope this stuff clears on out and people can start clearing up neighborhoods and burying the victims.

We didn't have tornadoes in my area, but it was very hard to watch and read about folks that were waiting it out and then to hear about the loss of lives and the destruction.     Some of the stories and pictures are heartbreaking.  I don't know how else to describe it.  The four year old child sucked from the arms of her mother as they  huddled in the basement, with the grandparents that were upstairs also dead and found in a field, to the two year old found critically injured and alone in a field. Link to one of the articles with the stories:

And sadly, there will be more before the day is through.  Bless all those that have lost a friend, neighbor or loved one, and bless those that are giving aid and helping those affected by the storms.   an angelic monkey

There's a good US map in this article, indicating the locations of the deadly tornadoes and tornado reports.

Crews search for survivors after storms leave at least 37 people dead in Midwest, South
March 3, 2012

HENRYVILLE, Ind. — Emergency crews desperately search for survivors Saturday after a violent wave of Midwest and Southern storms flattened some rural communities and left behind a trail of destruction: shredded homes, downed power lines and streets littered with tossed cars.
 ::snipping2::
The tornado outbreak, predicted by forecasters for days, killed at least 37 people in four states — Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio — but the death toll was expected to rise as state troopers, the National Guard and rescue teams made their way through counties cutoff by debris-littered roads and knocked down cellphone towers.

Toddler Found Alone In Field 10 Miles From Family’s Home After Tornado
March 3, 2012

INDIANAPOLIS (CBS/AP) — A hospital spokeswoman says a 2-year-old girl found alive in an Indiana field after violent storms is the sole survivor of her immediate family.

Cis Gruebbel is a spokeswoman for Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Ky. She said Saturday that the girl’s mother, father, 2-month-old sister and 3-year-old brother all died Friday when the storms devastated southern Indiana.

Gruebbel says the toddler is in critical condition.

She would not identify the child and says she could not provide details on the child’s ordeal. She says extended family members are at the hospital with the child.

Toddler found after twister dies in hospital
March 4, 2012

The 14-month-old girl found in a field after Friday's tornadoes passed away after being taken off life support on Sunday, her grandparents told NBC News.

The grandparents and doctors had earlier decided to remove Angel Babcock from life support due to the severity of her injuries.

Angel was found alive about 150 yards from where her family's home had stood. Her parents, Joe and Moriah Babcock, died instantly; so too did her brother Jaydon, 2 years, and sister Kendall, 2 months.
