Fears of disruption as solar storm strikes the Earth
March 8, 2012

The Earth is being battered by a storm of charged particles from the Sun, which could disrupt power grids, satellite navigation and plane routes.

This solar storm is the largest in five years - and will bombard the Earth's magnetic field throughout Thursday.

It was triggered by a pair of strong solar flares earlier this week.

The storm was predicted to peak in the afternoon UK time, but experts warn that the Sun's surface is still active and could trigger further storms.

Activity near the Sun's surface rises and falls through an 11-year cycle that is due to peak in 2013 or 2014.

Sunstorm Watch: Planes rerouted as massive solar storm brushes by Earth
March 8, 2012

The largest solar storm in five years -- spawned by a double whammy of flares from the sun -- has engulfed the Earth, but scientists say the planet has lucked out, largely missing the predicted dangers.

The storm arrived more peacefully Thursday morning than it could have. Scientists say that could change as the storm spends the day shaking the planet's magnetic field. Airlines and power grid operators were warned of potential issues from the storm -- and some reported taking precautionary steps just in case.

“We are flying alternate routes for seven flights,” Anthony Black, a spokesman for Delta Airlines, told FoxNews.com. Polar flights -- those with paths that cross over the North Pole -- can suffer from communications issues and pilots and passengers can be exposed to radiation.

To avoid that, Delta switched to preplanned alternate routes for several westbound flights between U.S. cities such as Atlanta, Minneapolis and New York City and Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Nagoya.

“It may be 15 to 20 minutes of additional time,” Black said.

Earth Dodges Major Major Solar Storm, But More to Come?
Chloe Albanesius By Chloe Albanesius
March 8, 2012

A solar radiation storm prompted by two major solar flares is causing quite the storm on the Internet, but it seems that our electronics and other gadgets are largely safe from magnetic disruptions, for now.

"All told, it's not a terribly strong event," physicist Joe Kunches of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told USA Today.

Still, there might be more to come. The storm is "not done and we may yet get the magnetic field needed to cause higher levels of geomagnetic storming," NOAA said on its Facebook page today.
