Jessica Funk-Haslam murder case update
March 15, 2012

 ::snipping2::
According to sheriff's detective Tony Turnbull, 13-year-old Jessica Funk-Haslam was slain near the dugout of a baseball field at Rosemont Community Park where she was found and there was no other crime scene. A woman, who was walking through the park on March 6, found the teen's body and called police.

The Sacramento County coroner said the cause of death was a combination of blunt force trauma to the head, asphyxia and a stab wound to the neck.

Investigators did not find a weapon at the crime scene, but it appears the killer used an edged weapon, Turnbull said.

Detectives believe Jessica was murdered sometime between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Monday, March 5 and they learned Funk-Haslam took a light rail train and bus to get to the park, according to Turnbull.

We think she was there at least for some period of time with somebody that she knew or somebody she was comfortable with."

A neighbor reported hearing screams between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. the night Jessica went missing.

"(The neighbor) had talked about it just being a very short duration scream, two to three seconds, that was unlike any other playful scream," Turnbull said.

In addition, detectives received surveillance video from a home near the park, which shows a person running very fast near the intersection of Rosemont Drive and Contempo Drive. The person was seen on video during the same time frame that detectives believe Jessica was murdered.

Turnbull said the person has not been identified and is not a suspect, but detectives would like to talk to him or her to find out if the individual has any information abut the crime

Screams heard in park where Sacramento girl was killed
March 2012

During a news conference Thursday afternoon, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department released new information about their investigation into the death of Jessica Funk-Haslam and some surveillance video.

The 13-year-old girl had trauma to her head, a stab wound to her neck, and had been asphyxiated. Officials brought in criminalists to help analysis the evidence gathered at Rosemont Park to narrow down the suspect search.

Investigators say once Jessica left her house after an argument with her mother that Monday night, she boarded at least two light rail trains, then transferred to a bus and got off at Rosemont Park. She attends Albert Einstein Middle School, which is next to the park.

They believe she got to the park about 6:30 p.m., and that she spent the next few hours with someone  she knew. She was killed between 8 and 9 p.m., and investigators say she was killed where her body was found the following morning near the baseball dugout.

New details emerge in search for 13-year-old California girl's killer
March 16, 2012

Investigators are looking to question a suspicious man seen on surveillance video near the California park where a 13-year-old girl was killed last week.
 ::snipping2::
Police said during a press conference Thursday that they believe the child spent several hours in the park with someone she knew before being killed, Fox 40 reported.

"I think she was there for some period of time with somebody she knew and was comfortable with," said Det. Tony Turnbull of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.

Turnbull also said investigators want to question an unidentified male seen running from the park at about the time the girl was killed.

The grainy surveillance video shows the individual ducking into a side street when a car approaches and then reemerging after the vehicle passes him.

Sweet Jessica from her memorial FB page.  Such a sad case.  I pray that are able to identify the man on the video and bring justice.

DNA Samples Taken from Students in Case of Murdered 8th Grader
April 17, 2012

SACRAMENTO—

FOX40 has learned last Thursday, Sacramento County detectives showed up at Albert Einstein Middle School to talk to three or four students and to take DNA cheek swabs from them.

It's the latest development in the frustratingly slow investigation into the murder of 13-year-old Jessica Funk Haslam. While surveillance video was taken from Rosemont Park the night of Jessica's murder, this is the first mention of a possible DNA link to the case.

Man sentenced in dugout slaying of 13-year-old Jessica Funk-Haslam
By Darrell Smith on MARCH 18, 2016

Ryan Douglas Roberts will serve 26 years to life in state prison for the murder of 13-year-old Jessica Funk-Haslam, a Sacramento Superior Court judge ruled Friday as Roberts’ family continued to assert his innocence, levying new claims of perjury against Sacramento County sheriff’s detectives who initially investigated the girl’s death.

Jurors convicted Roberts in September of the killing nearly four years after Jessica’s body was found March 6, 2012 inside a baseball diamond’s dugout at Rosemont Community Park in the shadow of her middle school. She had been beaten, stabbed and asphyxiated, the shocking death prompting a massive manhunt that ended with Douglas’ arrest in August 2013.

Investigators never recovered a weapon and prosecutors had no motive, but DNA gleaned from discarded cigarette butts found at the scene and the girl’s belt were key building blocks in the case against Roberts.
