Trayvon Martin case: George Zimmerman waives right to speedy trial

George Zimmerman has waived his right to a speedy trial, arguing to a Florida court that he needs more time to prepare. The move means it could be October at the earliest -- and likely much later -- before the start of his second-degree murder trial.

Zimmerman's intentions were outlined in two brief documents that Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara, filed Tuesday in Seminole County, Fla., circuit court. The actions did not come as a surprise to legal experts, who said such moves are common even in less-complex and lower-profile felony cases.

Florida's rules of criminal procedure require that suspects charged with a felony be brought to trial within 175 days of their arrest, unless those defendants ask that the right be waived. Zimmerman turned himself in to authorities on April 11, charged with the murder of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager who was walking in Zimmerman's neighborhood, and whom Zimmerman considered to be suspicious.

Zimmerman, 28, was released from jail after posting $150,000 bond. He admits he shot Martin, 17, but claims he did so in self-defense. He has pleaded not guilty in court documents, making his appearance unnecessary at a Tuesday arraignment hearing

House to vote on Trayvon amendment

House Democrats said Tuesday they will offer an amendment to push to overturn stand-your-ground self-defense laws in states like Florida.

The amendment, which would withhold some grants from states that have such laws, will come as part of the House's debate on the Commerce Department spending bill.

"'Shoot-first' laws have already cost too many lives. In Florida alone, deaths due to self-defense have tripled since the law was enacted. Federal money shouldn't be spent supporting states with laws that endanger their own people," said Reps. Raul Grijalva of Arizona and Keith Ellison of Minnesota, the two Democrats who are offering the legislation. "This is no different than withholding transportation funds from states that don't enforce seat-belt laws."   ::snipping2::

Trayvon Martin family to visit Stephen Lawrence memorial

Trayvon Martin's family will visit the memorial to Stephen Lawrence later today. Stephen's mother Doreen wrote to the family after their 17 year old son was shot and killed in Florida, in what many campaigners have called a racist murder.

Trayvon's mother Sybrina Fulton, his father Tracy Martin and older brother Jahvaris will tour the Stephen Lawrence centre in Deptford which provides education and training for disadvantaged young people. They'll also visit the bus stop where Stephen was murdered.

Why did Mark O'Mara take George Zimmerman case for free?

Orlando attorney Mark O'Mara jumped into the George Zimmerman murder case, agreeing to defend one of the most reviled men in America for free.

Why did he do it? Why have other lawyers agreed to represent social pariahs — at no charge?

Orlando attorney J. Cheney Mason took on the case of child-murder suspect Casey Anthony, eventually donating more than 1,200 hours, which he estimates was more than $600,000 worth of his time.

I took that case," Mason said, "because I saw a desperate need for that defendant to have experience on that team that she didn't have, and I'm opposed to the death penalty.

"I've done it before. I don't know if I'm going to do it again," Mason admitted. "...I did not anticipate the case was going to be as long and involved as it was."

O'Mara says that, in the Zimmerman case, he is ready for a long, difficult slog.

It took him just two hours to say yes when he took the case in mid-April. By then, he told the Orlando Sentinel, Zimmerman had been in hiding for several weeks and had become one of the most hated men in America. A radical black militia group had placed a bounty on his head.

O'Mara is no longer working for free. Late last month, he discovered $150,000 was remaining from $200,000 that Zimmerman had raised via a homemade website and PayPal account. Zimmerman already had used some of the money for living expenses, O'Mara said.
 ::snipping2::
"I can't deny the fact that everyone out there seems to think this is going to have future benefits for me," he said. "I'll deal with it when it comes, if it comes."

O'Mara said he took the case because it seemed tailor-made for him: He's a criminal-trial specialist who has handled high-profile Central Florida cases and murder defendants.

By his estimation, several Central Florida lawyers were qualified to defend Zimmerman, but "I really felt I had a skill set to address this case better than most people I know," he said. "That sounds really egotistical."
He now expects to be paid.

 "I'm a businessman," O'Mara said.

I'm sorry they lost their son but you don't see GZ's family traveling the country asking for donations for George.

George and Cindy never did the world tour.

What ticks me off more than anything is that they are SO thirsty for justice, they want to risk putting a possibly innocent man behind bars for the rest of his life.

And I will say this:

If it turns out that George was not acting in self defense or anything then he needs to be punished and if it turns out that he was acting in self defense people need to leave him the hell alone and let him move on with his life.

This is turning into the Duke Lacrosse case.

So what happens if GZ is convicted and they (jury) find him guilty but all the evidence backs up what he, LE and eye witnesses say?

Would he eventually be released?

I really feel as if this is going to end up like Casey's case but instead of convicting a guilty person they will convict a person who is possibly innocent and send him to jail.

It's terribly sad that anyone ever loses their life, but this is absolutely an idealogical/politicized agenda driven campaign....what about every other victim? what about the two ppl that had the crap beat out of them by a mob of 20 but the MSM buried it?? also, even teenagers can be vicious and capable of horrific acts of violence and if I see a strange teen on my street and yes even in a hoodie I am going to check out what is up...Just about 10 days ago I came home around 2am and there was a girl - well late teens and maybe early 20's stumbling in my driveway. I figured she had been at a wedding on the beach due to her cocktail dress and the fact we have non-stop weddings from March-October....I let her pass by but kept watching her since she was looking towards the Gulf....finally I got in my car to try and find her as I was worried she was going to go out to the water or beach and pass out, and being that drunk when the tide came in she could have drowned. does that make me a profiler? Maybe, but I knew she didn't live out there and was worried for her. I finally found her parents out by the gulf with her so she was in safe hands but it's not something I was going to shrug my shoulders and hope she woud be ok, and I wouldn't do it if someone out there that I knew didn't live there was acting in a suspicious manner.....and again evreyone out there is the same way. We are such a small area and all know who lives there and watch out for everyone, prolly why we can keep our doors unlocked and I even keep my keys in the car

It doesn't help either when just about every morning my local news is,,,,robbery....suspect black male with a dark hoodie on...news....home invasion..suspect black male wearing a dark hoodie...news...drive by shooting...suspect...black males wearing hoodies...
This is daily! So, forgive me if I would see a stranger in my neighborhood who does not look familiar who might be black wearing a dark hoodie...I am going to be cautious ...
Does this make me racist or profiling? Geez I hope not, but if our news is conveying this info to us, you can bet that I am going to be on the lookout for people with that description.

Democrats withdraw Trayvon amendment

Democrats backed off of their effort Tuesday to offer a "Trayvon amendment" to pressure states to drop their stand-your-ground laws after learning it was likely to be ruled out of order under the evening's rules for debate on the House floor.

Rep. Keith Ellison, Minnesota Democrat, said he will still try to force a debate at a more "appropriate" time in the future, saying action is demanded by the case of Trayvon Martin, the Florida teenager who police said was shot dead in a street encounter with a neighborhood watch volunteer.

The Ellison amendment would have docked federal criminal justice grants to states that have stand-your-ground laws, which allow residents to use deadly force to respond to an attack without first having to retreat.

Florida's version of the law has come under scrutiny after Trayvon's death. George Zimmermann, a neighborhood watch volunteer, has been charged with murder in the case.

"Shoot-first laws make prosecutions harder because they presume the use of deadly force is reasonable," Mr. Ellison said on the House floor Tuesday as he explained why he wanted to raise his amendment.

His plan would have docked states with such laws 20 percent of their money under the Byrne Justice Assistance Grants, which are used to fund a wide array of programs, from law enforcement to drug treatment to jails and prosecutor's offices. Mr. Ellison said nearly half of all states now have stand-your-ground laws.

He had wanted to raise the amendment as part of the House's debate over the Justice Department spending bill.

But the way the amendment was drawn made it out of order.   ::snipping2::
