ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. -

Police are searching for a missing Vermont woman after her 2-year-old child was found alone in her car a short distance from her home.

A friend called police Sunday night when she hadn't heard from 33-year-old Melissa Jenkins of St. Johnsbury.

Police found her car and searched the area, but couldn't find Jenkins. State troopers said they saw evidence indicating her disappearance is potentially suspicious.

Jenkins is a white female with blond hair and hazel eyes. She approximately 5-feet 4-inches tall and weighs about 130 pounds.

Evidence suggests foul play in disappearance of Vermont mother Melissa Jenkins, police say

Quote
Jenkins' young son was found, unharmed, inside the 2006 silver Suzuki.
"Responding troopers observed evidence at the scene to indicate that Ms. Jenkins' disappearance is the result of foul play as evidence present showed signs that a struggle had occurred," Detective Sgt. Walter Smith said in a press release Monday.

Jenkins is a science teacher at the St. Johnsbury Academy. She is not married and lives alone with her son, though she often stays with her mother, according to authorities.

I wonder how long the toddler was left alone in the car?

Police: Body discovered in Barnet believed to be Jenkins

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. -

A mystery in the Kingdom has the St. Johnsbury community on edge.

A road closed sign marked the start of a crime scene Monday on Goss Hill Road.  It's here that Melissa Jenkins car was found not far from her home.
The 33 year old vanished Sunday night. Her car was found running. Her two-year-old was sitting in the back seat, but the long-time St. Johnsbury Academy teacher was nowhere to be found.

"She loves her child more than anything in the world. She'd never leave her child. She's one of the best mothers I've ever seen in my whole life," said Eric Berry, a relative.

"She would never do that. No, she would never," said local resident Dave Langmaid.

First thing Monday morning crews began searching the woods close to where Jenkins car was found, but as the hours wore on and few clues were found, aerial teams were brought in to help. Police found signs of a struggle near the car and believe the two-year-old watched as his mother was taken.
A friend went looking for Jenkins -- finally found the toddler several hours later and called 911.

Family believe Jenkins left home to help someone with car trouble, but exactly who she planned to meet is a mystery.  ::snipping2::

Authorities will continue to seek a suspect in the disappearance of 33-year-old Melissa Jenkins, Vermont State Police Maj. Ed Ledo said at a news conference Monday night. The public should be vigilant, he said.

A family friend is caring for the boy. His father, B.J. Robertson, would not comment on Jenkins’ disappearance.

Eric Berry, 44, of Lyndonville, a cousin by marriage whose daughter is Jenkins’ goddaughter, described her as a beautiful, kind person whom he believes was coming to someone’s aid when she disappeared.
 ::snipping2::
“She left her house with the idea, I think, to try to help somebody, and that’s as far as I’m going to go with that, because I don’t want to damage any investigation,” he said. “Again, she was someone that was always trying to help somebody in the world, and I think that’s what happened.”

He told students of her disappearance in an assembly in the chapel Monday morning. Some, especially the dozen seniors she met with each morning as their adviser, were “very emotional,” he said.

He said he told the students, “The best we can do for each other and Miss Jenkins is to be hopeful.”

Vermont police believe body found is beloved teacher
LISA RATHKE | Associated Press
ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. — The discovery of a body believed to be that of a beloved teacher at a prestigious boarding school sent shudders of grief and anxiety through a small New England town a day after her SUV was found running with her unharmed 2-year-old boy inside.

Melissa Jenkins, a 33-year-old single mother, taught science at St. Johnsbury Academy, a school of about 970 students that was established in the 1840s and whose alumni include former President Calvin Coolidge.

Vermont State Police Maj. Ed Ledo would not give details on the condition of the body found Monday in Barnet, a town not far from St. Johnsbury. A friend who was looking for Jenkins called police Sunday and Jenkins' vehicle was discovered that evening near signs of a struggle.

An autopsy was planned for today. A family friend is caring for the boy. His father, B.J. Robertson, would not comment on Jenkins' disappearance.

Authorities acknowledged they did not know whether Jenkins' disappearance was isolated, and Ledo said at a news conference that the public should be vigilant as authorities continue to seek a suspect.

In addition to numerous leads and interviews being conducted, the Vermont State Police Crime Scene Search Team returned to the scene this morning where the body was located and additional items of interest were collected. The description of the items recovered at the scene will not be disclosed in an effort to preserve the integrity of the investigation.

Maybe there are fingerprints or DNA on those items that will lead to a swift resolution.

I hope so, KittyMom.  A little boy will have to grow up without his mom, students lost their teacher, athletes lost their coach and more.  All for a senseless death. I hope there will be justice for Melissa Jenkins.
