Authorities seek help in missing Bradenton woman case
By LAURA C. MOREL
March 28, 2012

HILLSBOROUGH -- Authorities are asking for the public's help on the whereabouts of two missing women, one of them from Bradenton, after a severed leg that washed ashore matched with one of the women's DNA.

The mystery that spans three counties began Dec. 17 when Doris Carter, 62, of Plant City, left her home with Kelly Moriarty, of Bradenton. The women have been in a romantic relationship for about two years, authorities said.

"Somebody out there can give us some answers to the missing pieces of this puzzle," said Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office spokesman Larry McKinnon.

On Dec. 27, a severed leg washed ashore at 6990 4th St. S. in St. Petersburg.

Two days later, Manatee County Sheriff's Office deputies impounded Moriarty's vehicle off State Road 62 and held the car in their impound lot. The car was later searched, but there was no evidence of a crime.
On Jan. 27, the apartment manager where Moriarty lived contacted Moriarty's brother who is listed on her lease as the emergency contact.

When the brother went into Moriarty's condominium at Palms of Cortez in Bradenton, Christmas presents had not been opened. Bradenton police then began investigating her disappearance.

During an unrelated case, St. Petersburg police told Hillsborough sheriff's office investigators of the severed leg.

The families of both women provided samples of their DNA. On Friday, the Pinellas County Medical Examiner's Office said Moriarty's DNA was a match and that the severed leg had been in the water for one or two days, McKinnon said.

Police partly solve mystery of missing leg that washed ashore
March 28, 2012

A leg found washed ashore in St. Petersburg last December has turned out to belong to a missing Bradenton woman, part of a perplexing story that crosses three counties and involves two missing women.

Using DNA supplied by the family, the leg was matched to Bradenton's 38-year-old Kelly Moriarty, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

The mystery of the two women begins on Dec. 17, 2011, when Doris Carter, 62, of Plant City disappeared from her home along with Moriarty, who lived in a Bradenton apartment.

Carter's daughter told Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office detectives that when she woke up on the morning of Dec. 17, both women were gone and so was Moriarty's car.

Both women had been romantically involved for the past two years, Carter's daughter told the sheriff's office.

Three days later Manatee County Sheriff's Office deputies found Moriarty's car abandoned on S.R. 62 in Parrish but since they did not know she was missing at that time, they put a tag on it for her to remove it, a report states.

On Dec. 27, a severed leg was found washed ashore at 6990 4th St. S., St. Petersburg, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
On Dec. 29, Manatee County Sheriff's Office deputies impounded Moriarty's vehicle off SR 62 and held the car in their impound lot.

On Jan. 27, the apartment manager where Moriarty lived contacted Moriarty's brother who is listed on her lease as the emergency contact.

The management explained that she had not paid her rent and they couldn't make contact with her, according to police reports.

Moriarty's brother came to the apartment complex and was allowed to enter the apartment.

Inside Moriarty's apartment nothing appeared to be disturbed and a Christmas tree was still up with unopened Christmas packages, according to police reports.

Moriarty was then reported missing to the Bradenton Police Department, the reports state.

On Jan. 28, the Bradenton Police Department went to Plant City where detectives talked with Carter's daughter.

The daughter said she hadn't seen her mother since she left with Moriarty on Dec. 16-17. She told detectives it was not uncommon for both of them to be away for extended periods of time.

On Jan. 29, Carter's daughter contacted the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and reported her mother missing. Hillsborough detectives learned that Bradenton police had an active missing person's investigation of Moriarty, according to the reports.

Hillsborough Sheriff Office detectives then executed a search warrant on Moriarty's car and processed the car with crime scene technicians. No evidence of a crime was found, the reports state.

Severed leg evidence of Bradenton woman's murder
By Dale White
March 28, 2012

MANATEE - - One mystery was solved this week when a severed leg that washed up on a St. Petersburg beach Dec. 27 was shown to have come from a missing Bradenton woman.

The leg is evidence that Kelly M. Moriarity, 38, of Bradenton was murdered and dismembered sometime around Christmas Day last year, say detectives.

But many questions remain in the case involving Moriarty and her girlfriend, Doris Patricia Carter, 62, of Plant City, both of whom disappeared in late December.

Moriarty and Carter did not live together, but often spent weeks at a time living at each other's homes. They were not reported missing until late January, about a month after they were last seen.

New photos released of missing Bradenton women

TAMPA - The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has released new, updated photos of two women who went missing in December, 2011.  The leg of one of the women washed ashore in St. Petersburg.
 ::snipping2::

long snip
Results came back from the Pinellas County Medical Examiner last Friday. The leg is Moriarty's, the Hillsborough County report claims, and she is presumed to be deceased.

Her family released a statement, which reads: "The family was notified on Friday by Bradenton detectives of Kelly's passing. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our daughter/sister/aunt. As you can imagine, the full extent of our loss has yet to be realized, we are in shock, and are grieving Kelly's passing. We loved and miss her tremendously. It is our hope that the joint effort of the Bradenton police, Manatee County Sheriff, St. Petersburg police, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement can quickly find whoever did this to her and bring them to justice and bring some closure to the family. We would ask everyone to please respect the privacy of the family and allow us to mourn Kelly's loss privately."

Muralt says she has no idea where her mom is today. Knowing that a leg has been identified as Moriarty's, though, sets her head spinning.

"I'm overwhelmed," she said. "The dynamic of everything has completely changed. I wondered and questioned if anything bad has happened. I was hoping for the best. Did they go get married and she's afraid to tell me?"

Muralt admits she's losing hope that her mother will ever return home alive.

Investigators 'look for clues' at missing woman's home
Posted: 10/25/2012

PLANT CITY, Fla. - Forensic teams and deputies spent more than six hours searching for clues at the house of a missing woman. They are trying to solve the mystery of what happened to her and how her girlfriend's severed leg ended up washing ashore just 10 days after both were last seen.

Multiple bags of evidence were taken out of the home.

Doris Carter, 62, and Kelly Moriarty, 38, were last seen at Carter's Plant City home on the evening of December 16, 2011.  The women had been romantically involved for two years.

Manatee County Sheriff's deputies spotted Moriarty's car on S.R. 62 in Parrish on December 20.  The car was abandoned and there was no evidence of foul play.

5:39 PM, Oct 26, 2012

Plant City, Florida -- There may be a new development in that case of a woman's severed leg that washed ashore in St. Petersburg earlier this year.

Kelly Moriarty, 38, and Doris Carter 62, have been missing for more than 10 months now.

Detectives have been back out to Carter's Plant City home just within the past 24 hours and are using words like 'excited' and 'significant' when talking about the evidence they collected there

Documents show family members argued before women went missing
Posted: 10/26/2012

PLANT CITY, Fla. - New details emerged in the case of a severed leg that washed ashore in St. Petersburg.  Family members were involved in a fight over a Plant City home before the home's owner and her romantic partner went missing.

In a hand-written letter filed by the Hillsborough County Circuit Court exactly a year ago Friday, Doris "Pat" Carter asked for a hearing so she can kick her daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter out of her Plant City home.

"I, Doris Carter, request my daughter, Stacy Muralt, husband Anthony Muralt, [and granddaughter] to vacate my premises immediately do [sic] to an extended length of time undesirable to myself that these individuals have been occupying my residence," the letter reads.

A little less than two months after the October 26, 2011 letter was filed, Carter disappeared, along with her girlfriend, Kelly Moriarty

Severed leg murder mystery victim wanted family evicted
8:21 PM, Oct 29, 2012

Plant City, FL -- Just days before 38-year-old Kelly Moriarty and 62-year-old Doris Carter went missing, court documents show Doris Carter had her daughter Stacy Muralt and Stacy's husband, Anthony, evicted from the Plant City home the three had been sharing.

A hand written note from Carter says the couple had long outstayed their welcome.

Stacy Muralt acknowledged the timing and circumstances paint a less-than flattering picture for she and her husband, but she says it doesn't tell the whole story.

Documents show family members argued before women went missing

Hillsborough County Sheriff's detectives searched Carter's property Thursday night, with Muralt, her husband, and daughter still living inside.

Though detectives won't say much about what they hoped to find, they did leave with items that could be of evidentiary value. They're still trying to find Carter and Moriarty, last seen at the Plant City home on December 17, 2011.

The drama that precipitated their disappearance is documented in more court paperwork, filed by
Muralt and her husband in defense of Carter's eviction hearing.

They claimed that Carter suffered from documented mental illness, and that Moriarty was using that illness to take advantage of her life savings. Muralt even filed a complaint against Moriarty for Elderly Financial Exploitation with the Department of Children and Families.

According to the court documents, Muralt believed that her mother never wanted her to move out until she found out about the DCF investigation.

"The defendants also fear that [Carter] will unwittingly allow Kelly Moriarty to further diminish her assets and life savings to zero," the document reads.

If the Muralt's were living with Doris Carter and she went missing on December 17th why did it take them over a month to file a missing person's report?  In fact, they waiting until Moriarty's son filed a missing person's report on him mom before they did the same for their own mother.

While Doris's daughter stated her mom leaves for long periods of time did she not think it odd that she was gone for over a month, during Christmas away from her granddaughter, and left the Muralts to her home when she clearly wanted them evicted?

I wonder how much, if any, of Doris's money or belongings were used and sold during the time she has been missing?  I wonder if her estate can now be protected from the Muralt's considering Doris wanted them out?

Mystery of missing women lingers year later in Plant City
Updated: November 26, 2012 - 7:21 PM

PLANT CITY --
Kelly Moriarty and Doris "Pat" Carter seem like unlikely companions.

Moriarty was a high school softball star who told her family she was gay the year after she graduated from St. Petersburg Catholic High School. Carter — 23 years older than Moriarty — is the widow of a Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy and a mother.

They dated for two years, then vanished nearly a year ago.

Law enforcement officers have been working for months to figure out what happened, but two things remain clear: Moriarty is dead, and Carter's fate is unknown.

New information in severed leg murder mystery (VIDEO)
7:29 PM, Nov 8, 2012
Tampa, FL -- On December 18th 2009, criminal records show Doris Carter wanted her daughter and son-in law out of the home they were all sharing in Plant City.

Her petition for an order of protection was filed a full two years before Carter would eventually have the couple evicted.

In the application, Carter writes: "I go to my room to get away from them" and describes a physical confrontation her daughter Stacy Muralt, with whom she "can not get along". "Her face touching my face," she wrote, then "pushed me out of my office chair on the floor, hurting my left wrist and thumb."

"We are going to look at every aspect, including the family. And they're aware of that," said Det. Larry mcKinnon with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Detectives say they have known about the alleged domestic violence.

"Those are all red flags in a lot of people's minds, but it certainly doesn't rise to the level of 'you're the one that's committed a homicide," said McKinnon.

Just 12 days later, Carter had the protective order application dismissed, but the bad blood apparently continued, culminating in an eviction application two years later.

Within days of that eviction notice being served against the Muralts, Doris Carter, 62, and her partner, 38-year-old Kelly Moriarty, mysteriously disappeared.
