Trayvon Martin's mother in Bloomberg gun control video

- The mother of Florida shooting victim Trayvon Martin appears in a Mother's Day gun control video produced by an advocacy group led by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.  ::snipping2::

Noting that "this will be my first Mother's Day without my son, Trayvon," Sybrina Fulton asks viewers to urge their state governors "to re-examine similar Stand Your Ground laws throughout the nation to keep our families safe."

"Nobody can bring our children back," Fulton says in the video, released on Thursday to several websites by a Bloomberg-led gun control coalition called Second Chance on Shoot First.

"But it would bring us comfort if we can help spare other mothers the pain that we will feel on Mother's Day and every day for the rest of our lives."  ::snipping2::

Bloomberg often refers to the Stand Your Ground laws as "shoot first" laws.

"I hope Sybrina Fulton's courage will persuade state legislators to take a second look at shoot first laws and take a second chance to get them right," Bloomberg said in a statement.   ::snipping2::

Zimmerman's lawyer expects to get evidence Monday; special prosecutor says the rest of us won't
May 14, 2012
George Zimmerman's lawyer expects to get his first look at the evidence against his client Monday.

The rest of us will not.

Special Prosecutor Angela Corey's office announced late Friday afternoon that it will not release the information to the public on Monday.

Florida's public records law allows government agencies a reasonable amount of time to provide records, once they're requested. It does not define what a reasonable amount of time is, and Corey spokeswoman Jackelyn Barnard said she was not sure when the evidence might be released to those requesting it.

Her office, she said, is not intentionally trying to hide the evidence from the media and public.

Trayvon Martin's Mother, Sybrina Fulton, Reflects On Spirituality And Motherhood

A card, a hug and a key chain -- the gifts were not elaborate and did not cost more than a few dollars.

But the tokens of love that Trayvon Martin gave Sybrina Fulton a year ago are some of the last mementos she has of her son, the 17-year-old Florida boy whose February shooting by a neighborhood watch captain has launched America into a heated conversation about race, violence and the criminal justice system.

A Miami-Dade County government worker, Fulton has become an constant presence on television screens and at rallies in locales from New York to Los Angeles, where she goes from tears and mourning to stoic resilience while asking for "justice for Trayvon." The phrase has inspired clothing, websites and the foundation Justice for Trayvon that Fulton directs.

But as the devout Southern Baptist and new activist approaches Mother's Day, she can't keep her mind off the little things her boy would do on her special day.

Every year, Martin and his older brother would give her a card and a hug. Sometimes they would bring flowers. Last year Martin surprised her with a key chain.

And each year Fulton and her two boys -- her surviving son Jahvaris is 21 -- would attend services at Antioch Missionary Baptist, a large, popular church close to their home in suburban Miami. The service would last from 90 minutes to two hours. At one point, the pastor would ask the mothers to stand in recognition. Fulton would proudly oblige.

This year, Fulton, typically a Sunday regular at the church, which counts thousands among its members and offers three services each weekend, isn't sure if she'll make it to the pews. Attending rallies around the country (many at churches), interviews and town halls, Fulton has found that her time away from the cameras for prayer with her spiritual family has been slim.

Speaking from Birmingham, Ala., where she had walked in a Hoodie Freedom Walk and addressed a town hall just over a week ago, Fulton said it had been two weeks since she last attended Antioch.

"I know it will be hard," Fulton said about Mother's Day. "But my faith and family will pull me through."   ::snipping2::

I don’t want another mother to go through what Sybrina, Trayvon Martin’s mother, has gone through. Make us safer by reforming Shoot First laws across the country. One more child lost to reckless gun policies is one too many.

Zimmerman Prosecutor Again Accused of ‘Over-Charging’ Case

The prosecutor in charge of the Trayvon Martin murder case has won a case in which a woman received a 20-year jail sentence for trying to protect herself against her allegedly abusive husband.

Marissa Alexander fired a bullet into a wall as she tried to flee her husband, who was threatening to strangle her in August 2010.

Immediately, Democratic U.S. Rep Corinne Brown accused prosecutor Angela Corey of “over-charging” Alexander with aggravated assault. “There is no justification for 20 years,” Brown told Corey during a confrontation in the hallway of the Jacksonville, Fla. Courthouse, according to CNN.  ::snipping2::

Alexander told the court she had tried to get away from her husband, Rico Gray, and got to her car in the garage only to realize she did not have her car keys, CNN reported. She picked up the handgun and went back into the house and when Gray threatened to kill her, she fired a warning shot into the wall.

Alexander attempted to invoke Florida’s Stand Your Ground law in her defense, but a previous judge in the case said that was not consistent with her decision to re-enter her house, according to CNN. The jury took just 12 minutes to find her guilty.

Judge James Daniel told Alexander on Friday that he had no option but to give her a 20-year jail sentence, CNN reported. “Under the state's 10-20-life law, a conviction for aggravated assault where a firearm has been discharged carries a minimum and maximum sentence of 20 years without regarding to any extenuating or mitigating circumstances that may be present, such as those in this case," Daniel said.

Corey claimed she had offered Alexander a three-year sentence in return for a guilty plea but said the 31-year-old woman had turned down the plea bargain.

Update #19 – Trayvon Martin Shooting – Exploitation Tour Arrives In London

The Scheme Team continues the Trayvon Trail Of Tears exploitation tour arriving in London this morning, or should that be, mourning.

The “Team”, yes, all of them, including attorney Benjamin Crump Esq. arrived with their shiny new lavender luggage at the London airport in preparation for a week of fundraising and social benefit / bank account stimulation.

Apparently Jhavaris Fulton, Trayvon’s older half-brother, does not attend school any longer.   Jhavaris was spotted at church memorials fundraisers in Los Angeles a few weeks ago with mom Sybrina, and non-sperm donor ex-dad, Tracy.   Jhavaris (aka. fun-sized Skittles) also attended the southern leg of the tour recently in Georgia, Alabama, North and South Carolina, along with North Florida.

For the European leg Jhavaris can be seen sporting new designer kicks in an effort to keep up with the mournful designer clothier, and stylish role model, Tracy Martin.

The Scheme Team (Crump, Martin, Fulton et al) met Doreen Lawrence, the mother of  slain British teen Stephen Lawrence.    Doreen had reportedly written to Sybrina and passed along her condolences and understanding as a mother whose son Stephen was murdered by a racist gang in Eltham, England 19 years ago.

A youth and cultural center was set up by supporters, advocates, and those who felt impacted by the murder of Stephen Lawrence; and his mom, Doreen, took  the Scheme Team on tour of the facility.

There is a certain awkwardness evident in the video when Doreen asks Sybrina and Tracy what was Trayvon “into”, as in what did he enjoy?   Almost as if Sybrina and Tracy had not thought of that question before, and both were trying to figure out what that tattooed kid who stayed at their houses, well, sometimes, was all about.   ::snipping2::

CNN photo: George Zimmerman’s great-grandfather was black

ORLANDO, Fla. - A photo aired by CNN shows a black-skinned man that Orlando attorney Mark NeJame says was George Zimmerman’s great-grandfather.

It appears to support what Zimmerman’s family has been saying for months: that Zimmerman has black-skinned relatives and was raised in a mixed race family.

His views on race are important because Zimmerman, 28, of Sanford, is awaiting trial in Sanford on a second-degree murder charge. He shot and killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black 17-year-old, Feb. 26 as the teen walked through a gated community.

Trayvon’s father, family lawyers and critics say Zimmerman is guilty of racial profiling and murder.

But Zimmerman told police he acted in self-defense, pulling the trigger of his 9mm handgun only after Trayvon confronted him, knocked him to the ground and began hammering his head onto a sidewalk.   ::snipping2::

Families of Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman receive outpouring of donations

The mother of slain Florida teenager Trayvon Martin will be able to take about eight months of paid leave from her county job, thanks to the generosity of county employees.

Sybrina Fulton, who has worked at the Miami-Dade County housing authority for 23 years, collected $40,825 worth of donated vacation time, county records show. The paid time off is in addition to the nearly $100,000 the family raised on wepay.com and at rallies, which will be used to launch a criminal justice advocacy foundation in Trayvon's name.

The donated days are the latest in a mounting fortune in contributions that have amassed on both sides of the controversial case. With websites dedicated to the grieving parents of Trayvon Martin as well as for the man who killed him, and now even his attorney, funds gathered in the wake of the Feb. 26 tragedy promise to reach half a million dollars. Donors continue to reach into their pockets, even as each side criticizes the other's purpose and intent in seeking donations.

"They are using the money to continue the legacy of their son," said Michael Hall, a graphic designer and marketing specialist who helped launch the Justice for Trayvon Martin Foundation. The parents created the non-profit in March in response to their son's killing. "They didn't want a situation where people could say they were profiting off the loss of their son."

Hall said Trayvon's parents will become paid employees of the foundation, compensated for their time conducting speaking engagements and other advocacy work. He stressed that the foundation would keep Fulton and her ex-husband, Tracy Martin, at the levels of income they already made - not higher.   ::snipping2::

When did it become 'vogue' to profit from the death of your child?  Did it start to become the thing to do with the Anthony's??  They profited from Caylee's death, neither of them work anymore and now it seems like Trayvon's parents are profiting and don't feel like working anymore either...makes me sick really..

There is a small group that will raise a stink if it's B. On the other hand it will be a Florida jury, just as likely to announce the verdict that they like cheese while the kites fly. Glue sniffers ,all of them.

FBI seeks to charge George Zimmerman with hate crime

SANFORD, Fla. —

WFTV has learned charges against George Zimmerman could be getting more serious.

State prosecutors said Zimmerman, a neighborhood watchman, profiled and stalked 17-year-old Trayvon Martin before killing him, so the FBI is now looking into charging him with a hate crime.

Zimmerman admitted to killing Martin in February during a confrontation. However, he claims the shooting was in self-defense. He's facing a second-degree murder charge, which carries a maximum possible sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

In the meantime, FBI investigators are actively questioning witnesses in the retreat at the Twin Lakes neighborhood, seeking evidence for a possible federal hate crime charge.

Martin was unarmed when he was shot to death, police said, and some accuse Zimmerman of targeting the teenager solely because of the color of his skin.

WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said federal prosecutors would have to prove the hate crime to charge Zimmerman, though.

“What the government would have to prove is that Mr. Zimmerman acted out of hatred toward African-Americans. That's why he came into contact with him. That's why he shot and killed him.”

Sheaffer said a federal hate crime murder charge could bring more serious consequences than the second-degree murder charge Zimmerman faces now.

“Mr. Zimmerman could be punished by up to life in prison or even the death penalty,” said Sheaffer   ::snipping2::

George Zimmerman prosecutors file list of witnesses, evidence in Trayvon Martin shooting

SANFORD – As many eagerly awaited the release of never-before-seen evidence in the case against George Zimmerman, members of Special Prosecutor Angela Corey's office provided a preview on Monday in the form of an eight-page document.

The paperwork, filed with the Seminole County clerk as closing time approached, included a list of witnesses the state plans to call and identified several pieces of the evidence prosecutors expect to use to support a second-degree murder charge in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Late Monday, Zimmerman attorney Mark O'Mara confirmed he had received the evidence at his office. It consists of 67 CDs and "numerous" paper documents.

Most names were redacted from witness and evidence document obtained by the Orlando Sentinel, but six civilian witnesses were named: Trayvon's parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin; his brother, Jahvarius Fulton; and Zimmerman's neighbor, Frank Taaffe, friend Joe Oliver and father, Robert Zimmerman.

The document listed 18 Sanford police officers as primary witnesses, including lead Investigator Chris Serino. Corey's office also turned over five reports prepared by him, as well as written reports prepared by four other Sanford officers.

The list includes new video evidence from the night of the shooting — both from the 7-Eleven store where Trayvon reportedly purchased Skittles and Arizona iced tea and from a clubhouse in Retreat at Twin Lakes, the townhouse complex where the teen was killed.

Other video, showing Zimmerman being taken into the Sanford Police Department after the shooting, has already been made public. Crime scene photos of both Zimmerman and the teen are also listed in the documents filed Monday, as is Trayvon's autopsy report.

Also included in the evidence are phone records — Zimmerman's from Feb. 21 to Feb. 26 and from March 7 to March 22, Trayvon's from Jan. 1 through March 1, and those of an unnamed witness labeled "W8" from Feb. 26 through April 2.   ::snipping2::

W8 gave two statements — one to prosecutors and one to Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump, which suggests W8 may be the girl described by Crump as Trayvon's girlfriend.

Other primary witnesses include four FDLE investigators, three investigators from the office of state attorney Norm Wolfinger and two from Corey's office, including Dale Gilbreath, who hand-delivered the list to Seminole County clerks about 20 minutes before their doors closed for the day Monday.

Five fire-rescue personnel are listed as witnesses. So are a fingerprints expert with Sanford police, and FDLE experts in the fields of firearms, DNA, trace evidence and fingerprints.
