Robin Gibb struggles to speak as cancer battle continues

Robin Gibb has not been able to speak for a week.

The Bee Gees singer is still battling colon cancer in hospital, and is only able to communicate by blinking his eyes, as he has a tracheotomy tube in his neck.

His wife Dwina and grown up sons Robin-John and Spencer remain at his bedside, and he is regularly visited by his showbiz friends.

Singer and close friend Jim Dooley told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: ''He can't speak at the moment because he has a tracheotomy, and he has to communicate by blinking his eyes.

''Dwina has said that because he spent so long in a coma there are a lot of things he will have to learn to do again if he comes through it.

''He will have to re-learn how to walk. It's 50/50 whether he comes through this but Dwina is a wonderful woman and is giving him all the love you can give.''

Robin, 62, has contracted pneumonia, but came out of a coma after 12 days last month, astounding doctors with his recovery.

Chemotherapy for his condition is on hold while he regains strength.

Robin Gibb, Bee Gees Co-Founder, Dead at 62

Singer had been battling cancer for years

By David Browne

May 20, 2012 6:35 PM ETRobin Gibb, one-third of the Bee Gees, died Sunday after a long battle with cancer, his spokesperson has confirmed via a statement. Gibb was 62 years old.

"The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery," reads the statement. "The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."

Two years ago, Gibb battled colon and liver cancer, but despite making what he called a "spectacular recovery," a secondary tumor recently developed, complicated by a case of pneumonia.

Gibb was born in Manchester, England, in 1949, along with twin brother Maurice. (Maurice died in 2003 of complications from a twisted intestine; eerily, Robin had surgery for the same medical issue in 2010.) Along with their older brother Barry, the brothers began harmonizing as a trio in Australia, where the family moved in 1958. Although the Bee Gees had some success in Australia – they hosted a weekly variety show there – they didn't truly arrive until they returned to England and signed with manager Robert Stigwood. Robin's quivering, vulnerable voice was featured prominently on several of the group's earliest and most Beatles-eque hits, including "New York Mining Disaster 1941," "I Started a Joke," "Massachusetts," and "I've Gotta Get a Message to You."

Although he looked and sounded like the meekest Bee Gee, Robin grew into the family rebel. By 1969, he and Barry were feuding over whose song should be singles, and Robin, then 20, was declared a "ward of the state" by their father when his drinking and partying seemed to take over his life. "It happened so fast that we lost communication between us," Gibb later recalled. "It was just madness, really."

Robin in the middle

(CNN) -- Robin Gibb, one of three brothers who made up the disco group the Bee Gees behind "Saturday Night Fever" and other hits from the 1970s, died on Sunday, according to a statement on his website.

He was 62.

Gibb "passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery," said the statement, which was attributed to his family.

Diagnosed with colon and liver cancer, Gibbs had been in a coma as he battled pneumonia earlier this spring, representative Doug Wright said.

Doctors believe that Gibb had a secondary tumor, Wright said April 14, confirming a news account in the U.K. newspaper The Sun. Gibb had emergency surgery in 2010 for a blocked bowel and then had more surgery for a twisted bowel, Wright confirmed.

The only surviving member of the three Bee Gees is brother Barry, 65.

Robin Gibb remembered in South Florida

By Ben Crandell May 22, 2012 08:09 AM

Robin Gibb performs his timeless hit about memory and mortality, "I Started a Joke."

Away from the spotlight, longtime Miami Beach residents Robin and Barry Gibb, opposites in temperament and creative impulses, had a relationship that was extraordinary even for two brothers.

“They had a magical connection,” said John Merchant, veteran producer and engineer at the brothers' Middle Ear Inc. recording studio in Miami Beach.

Robin Gibb, who with Barry and twin Maurice was one-third of the global pop superstar trio the Bee Gees, died on Sunday of complications from cancer at age 62.

Merchant began at Middle Ear as an intern in 1988, and through 2004 worked on many late-career Bee Gees albums, including “One,” “Size Isn't Everything,” several live recordings and projects produced by the brothers for the likes of Celine Dion, Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand.

robin-gibb-miami-300.jpgThe brothers were competitive and approached songwriting from very different angles, Merchant said from his home in Nashville. Robin wanted a pop groove, Maurice was interested in sophisticated textures, and Barry focused on the message in the lyrics. Their fights were legendary.

“Sometimes Barry would go off left of center and Robin would go: ‘That's not a hit.' And I'd say ‘Oh, dear,'” Merchant recalled, with a laugh. “But they always found a way to work it out. They had an expression they learned from their father: ‘Let's put a kettle on.'”

Also legendary was Robin's wicked sense of humor, which often came in the form of “shockingly filthy” jokes, Merchant said. Robin was also a prolific doodler, again usually working in a profane motif, with the brothers' record company bosses a frequent target.

“I still have to smile when I think about it,” Merchant said.
