3 nabbed in break-ins targeting elderly

Three people have been arrested in connection with two home invasions in which elderly people were targeted on the East Side.

Dimas Garza, Mario Moreno and Grace Taman all were arrested Friday in connection with two break-ins that happened Thursday morning within blocks of one another.

The first incident happened about 1 a.m. in the 400 block of Como Avenue when someone using a screwdriver broke into the home of an 89-year-old woman who told officers she fired a revolver at the intruder.

The person fled but left the screwdriver, police said.

About three hours later, an 85-year-old man was shot in the torso during another break-in in the 300 block of Edna. His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

That resident told police he awoke as a man was shooting at him three or four times.

The resident said he begged the man to let him go, but the assailant used a phone cord to tie his hands to his feet. The robber then asked for money and medication as another person went through the resident's belongings in other rooms.

The victim said he told the man he had no money, but that his wallet was in his pants in a different room.

The thief took rings from the man's hands and two of his guns. Police also found an emptied piggy bank.

Officers found blood on the man's back door, which appeared to be unlocked.

Police spokesman Matt Porter said another resident reported a burglary Thursday night and officers also traced evidence from that scene to the three suspects.

Police said Taman worked in elderly care and targeted the victims.

“This was not a random crime,” Police Chief William McManus said, calling the criminals “predators.”
