Suspect in Sierra LaMar Case Not in Court, Attorney Asks for More Time to Review Case
Posted: Aug 29, 2012 5:23 PM CDT Updated: Aug 29, 2012 5:23 PM CDT

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Antolin Garcia-Torres, the man authorities say they believe is responsible for Sierra LaMar's disappearance, was set to make an appearance in court today but did not.
 ::snipping2::
The Santa Clara County Court Clerk's office says the Defense asked for more time to review evidence they received from the Prosecution in a discovery motion.

Antolin Garcia-Torres will be in court again on September 26th and has yet to enter a plea to the charges he faces.

Sheriff: Fingerprint Connects Suspect to Sierra LaMar
Sep 05, 2012

During an interview Tuesday, Sheriff Laurie Smith—whose office is pushing for control of the San Jose Police Department’s $4.1 million fingerprint program—revealed new details about the case involving the suspected kidnapping and murder of 16-year-old Sierra LaMar.

Smith said the most notable achievement of the Sheriff’s Office fingerprint division came earlier this year, when her team matched a fingerprint from LaMar to a print found on the car of her suspected kidnapper and killer, Antolin Garcia-Torres.

Volunteers search for missing teen Sierra Lamar
Sunday, September 09, 2012

MORGAN HILL, Calif. (KGO) -- In Morgan Hill, volunteers showed up to search for missing teenager Sierra Lamar, as they have every Saturday and Wednesday since mid-March.

The 15-year-old disappeared from her home on March 16th. Antolin Garcia-Torres has been charged with her murder, but her body hasn't been found.

Friday's discovery of female remains in San Benito County hasn't discouraged volunteers.

Wednesday, Sep 12, 2012  |  Updated 5:27 PM PDT

Sierra LaMar search organizers have announced they are going to scale back weekly searches for the missing teenager from Morgan Hill to one search a week.

They are suspending the Wednesday volunteer searches as of today, according to The KlaasKids Foundation's Marc Klass.
 ::snipping2::
Sierra's dad Steve LaMar said it is getting harder to find areas that still need to be searched. He siad they will now use the time during the week to better plan for the Saturday searches.

Volunteers search for missing teen Sierra LaMar
Saturday, September 15, 2012

MORGAN HILL, Calif. (KGO) -- In Morgan Hill, the search for missing teen Sierra LaMar returned to the water. On Saturday search teams looked through reservoirs that had been explored previously. This weekend marks six months since Sierra was last seen in March on her way to school.

Wednesday's searches were canceled this week, leaving just Saturday as the scheduled search day, "We just needed to maybe go back just a little bit so that we can regroup," search volunteer Cecelia Ponzini said. "I think the mappers want to get at other areas, get maps ready for other areas. And so we'll just do Saturdays for awhile. And then probably go back to Wednesdays, I'm hoping. Many of the searchers want Wednesdays back. They're willing to be here."

Plea Entry in Sierra LaMar Case Could Be Delayed Months
8:56 am  (September 18, 2012)

Sierra LaMar murder and kidnapping suspect Antolin Garcia-Torres is scheduled to appear in court at 2 p.m. Sept. 26 in Department 23 of the San Jose Hall of Justice to again possibly enter a plea.

A hearing on Aug. 29 continued the proceedings yet again, with his appearance waived just as was done on July 31, according to Santa Clara County prosecutor David Boyd.

Garcia-Torres waived arraingment—the advisement of the charges brought against him—in May and then on July 31 and Aug. 29 didn't appear. He's been appointed Santa Clara County Public Defender Traci Owens to represent him.

"They are very standard, routine ... it happens all the time in criminal cases," Boyd said after explaining the reasons for the delay in the plea entering. "It's on for entry of plea [on Sept. 26] ... where he'll either say guilty, which is highly unlikely, or not guilty."

Boyd said prosecutors have not yet decided whether they'll seek the death penalty for Garcia-Torres, 21, accused of kidnapping and murdering local teenager Sierra LaMar, 15, who was last seen March 16 on her way to catch the morning bus to Sobrato High School in Morgan Hill. "I'm not prepared to talk about this right now," Boyd said. "I'm not in charge of the death penalty protocol. I'm not prepared to answer that question."

The prosecutor said the plea-entering hearing will most likely be delayed many times as Garcia-Torres' attorney needs time.

Father of accused killer of Morgan Hill teen Sierra LaMar goes on trial for molestation
Posted:   09/19/2012 07:24:28 PM PDT
September 20, 2012 6:15 AM GMT Updated:   09/19/2012 11:15:11 PM PDT

Defense attorneys frequently bring up an accused killer's beleaguered childhood, hoping to soften up a judge or jury and secure a more lenient sentence. But even before Antolin Garcia-Torres is tried next year in the killing of 15-year-old Sierra LaMar, his dysfunctional family background surfaced Wednesday in a highly unusual way -- during his father's trial on child molestation charges.

Genaro Garcia Fernandez, 51, is charged in Santa Clara County Superior Court with 18 sex crimes against two female relatives. Prosecutors allege he first fondled the primary victim when she was 4 years old and began raping her periodically when she was just 7 -- in the same small San Martin home where his son, Garcia-Torres, grew up.

If Fernandez is convicted, he will spend the rest of his life in prison. Garcia-Torres, 21, is also facing a life sentence. Prosecutors allege he kidnapped and killed LaMar, who disappeared from Morgan Hill on March 16. Her body has never been found. But her DNA was in Garcia-Torres' car.

The jury of 10 women and two men in Fernandez's trial will not be told of his connection to the accused killer. Garcia-Torres' father's history also will not figure in the son's trial, though it may come up during sentencing if he is convicted of killing LaMar.

Garcia-Torres' family background may ultimately be seen as grounds for sympathy or merely as the pathological root of his suspected criminality. But his father's case offers a glimpse into what life was like in the family home where Garcia-Torres was raised.

Father of Sierra Lamar's Suspected Killer Convicted of Child Molestation
Genaro Garcia Fernandez was convicted Wednesday of repeated rape and molestation and faces life in prison.
3:10 pm (September 26, 2012)

After a trial that lasted six days, Genaro Garcia Fernandez was convicted of 17 felony counts of child molestation in a Morgan Hill court on Wednesday.

Garcia Fernandez, the father of Antolin Garcia-Torres (the man accused of kidnapping and killing Sierra LaMar), was found guilty of "sexually molesting a female relative when she was a child, including repeatedly raping her starting when she was just 7," according to the Mercury News.

There was little sign of a not guilty verdict in this case. The defense team did not call a single witness or make an opening statement, the Mercury News reported.

Happy Birthday, Sierra.

Sierra LaMar's 16th Birthday is Today
Friday, Oct 19, 2012

Missing Morgan Hill teenager Sierra LaMar's 16th birthday is today, an event marred by her unknown whereabouts after more than seven  months of searching.
 ::snipping2::
"Searches are going to continue on Saturdays as long as the family wants them," Klaas said.

Last month, searches were pared down to only Saturdays instead of previous bi-weekly search efforts on Wednesdays and on the weekend.

Klaas said numbers "erode over time" but a core group of volunteers comes out each Saturday, combing through the Santa Clara County area looking for Sierra.

Amid the search for Sierra, Antolin Garcia-Torres, 21, has been charged with her kidnapping and murder after DNA evidence believed to be Sierra's was found in his car.

He was arrested on May 21 but has yet to enter a plea.
