The article doesn't say how the little girl sustained the head injury.  Putting bleach drops in the eyes of a baby repeatedly?  That's evil!

Woman charged with bleaching daughter’s eyes

ACOMA, Wash. —

After repeatedly putting bleach into her daughter’s eyes and causing permanent vision loss, a Tacoma woman was charged with child abuse, Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said.

Lindquist charged Jennifer Mothershead, 29, with first-degree assault of a child on Tuesday.

Prosecutors said that last May, the 15-month-old toddler was airlifted to Harborview after suffering a head injury.

While she was hospitalized, hospital staff said they noticed that a previously diagnosed eye condition had worsened to the point that the toddler was sleeping 20 to 22 hours per day because exposure to sunlight was extremely painful, prosecutors said.

According to authorities, Mothershead admitted that she administered eye medication and said that her daughter was a “fighter” when it came to the eye drops.   She had no explanation for the head trauma, police said.

Detectives placed the child into protective custody.

When hospital staff members later opened the eye drops that Mothershead had been giving to her daughter, they noticed a foul odor. Detectives said they noted the odor as well, and the solution caused minor burning on a detective’s wrist.

Investigators sent the eye drops to the Food and Drug Administration’s forensic chemistry lab where scientists determined that the eye drops contained bleach.  The staff at Harborview determined that the damage to the child’s eyes was consistent with repeated exposure to bleach, and ruled out the possibility that the eye dropper had been merely cleaned with bleach.

Mother accused of putting bleach in infant daughter's eyes

Showing no emotion to the trauma of having her daughter airlifted, the mother said she had no idea what caused the head injury, only claiming that a friend was caring for her just before it happened, prosecutors wrote. The documents didn't give any other details about the head injury.

But asked about the eye infection, the mother said her daughter's eyes had been swollen shut for about four weeks and that the issue began two months' prior when her daughter got a scratch on her eye while playing in a barn, documents said.

She said her daughter was given antibiotics and eye drops for the infection, and that she was primary person to put them in her daughter's eyes as her husband had just recently filed for divorce. Court documents say she wanted the father's visits severely limited because of the baby's fragile eye condition and she was the main caregiver.

When the daughter was placed into protective custody at the hospital for the head injury, the mother said she needed to go get the eye drops from the hospital room.

Detectives said they would make sure the girl gets her proper medication, but when hospital staff later opened the container, they noticed a strong fumes smell that caused their eyes to burn, prosecutors said. A detective also investigated the bottle and noted the strong smell.

The bottle was sent out for testing and it was later determined to contain bleach, prosecutors said.

A doctor at Children's Hospital later told detectives the infant's eye infections were consistent with injuries caused by bleach, and whoever gave the initial diagnosis of a scratched eye was incorrect.

The girl's condition improved once removed from her mother's care, but doctors say her vision may never be normal and that some blindness in her right eye was permanent, documents said.

Mothershead is being held on $150,000 bail. The infant, now 2 years old, has been staying with her biological father since the original incident. Mothershead has a younger child that is also in the care of other family members.

Mom charged with pouring bleach into toddler's eyes
April 30, 2012

Prosecutors have charged a Pierce County mother with child assault after she allegedly poured bleach into her 14-month-old daughter's eyes multiple times, causing permanent damage.

Jennifer Mothershead pleaded not guilty to the charges Monday in Pierce County court. A judge ordered Mothershead to be held on $150,000 bail.

The doctor said the child's vision "may never be normal" and that loss of vision in her right eye was permanent.

The court ruled that Mothershead not be allowed to see or have contact with her daughter, who is currently with her biological father. Mothershead reportedly has no prior criminal history.

A chemical burn to the eye presents completely differently than a scratched cornea or eye infection.  Whoever diagnosed this child after the initial visit (assuming she ever really had a corneal abrasion) should have their license revoked.

Also, Children's Hospital allowed this to go on for months because they wanted to be 100% sure the mom was hurting the child before reporting their suspicions.

I wonder if the mother exhibited suspicious behavior that should have been called into question by her ex husband or her family?  Did she present as an imbalanced woman with a child who's eyes would not heal?  Especially when the abrasion supposedly happened to one eye in the barn but then turned into two eyes swollen shut?

Lots of hands went into the final permanent damage done to the baby.  How much of a responsibility do we have toward children in our society?  How many of us are willing to speak up?

“Of course we felt guilty, we knew from very early on that she had this,” said Dr. Avery H. Weiss, of the Roger Johnson Clinical Vision Laboratory at Seattle Children’s. “But we were reluctant to implicate the mother until we were 100 percent sure.”

How awful...I cannot believe that they knew and didn't report this earlier.  That poor little girl.  I just don't get it...I really don't.

What an idiot!  It wasn't his responsibility to implicate anyone.  It was his responsibility to have the child removed and let the authorities figure out who to implicate.  What a doofus!
