Heard on HLN that West told Jean Carsarez that the jury "will be" sequestered from the get-go.

That's good.

I don't always believe in a sequestered jury but this is one trial that needs it.

Zimmerman attorneys depose Trayvon Martin's step-mother, cousin
5:39 p.m. EDT, May 2, 2013

Attorneys in the George Zimmerman second-degree murder case have deposed Trayvon Martin's step-mother and cousin, according to records made public today.

Tomorrow several of the defendant's neighbors from the Sanford subdivision where Trayvon was shot are to be deposed, one has reported.

Attorneys for both sides continue to question potential witnesses about the case, which is set for trial June 10 in Sanford.

Paperwork made public today shows that attorneys for the prosecution and defense were in Miami Thursday and Friday and deposed 12 people, including Trayvon's step-mother and cousin.

The names of all but one – Trayvon's cousin – were not in the deposition notice.

It's not clear who the others are or what they told attorneys.

But in court Tuesday, Assistant State Attorney Bernie de la Rionda referred to the sworn testimony of a Miami-Dade schools official

George Zimmerman attorneys: State voice experts may be using phony science
10:50 a.m. EDT, May 6, 2013

Attorneys for murder suspect George Zimmerman are challenging the scientific validity of state voice recognition experts.

In a new motion, defense attorney Mark O'Mara wrote that those unnamed experts may be using phony science, so the judge should hold a hearing, listen to evidence about how they did their work then decide whether to allow them to testify at Zimmerman's trial

The motion, filed Friday but made public today, is almost certainly related to a much-played 911 recording made Feb. 26, 2012, the night Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black 17 year old in Sanford.

Family attorney Benjamin Crump told reporters that Trayvon's father, Tracy Martin, changed his opinion after listening to a cleaned up version of the recording, but prosecutors last week told Circuit Judge Debra S. Nelson that they knew of no cleaned up version.

Crump last week said that when Tracy Martin listened to the recording a second time, at Sanford's City Hall, he was listening on a computer and could hear the audio more clearly.

FBI audio experts tried to analyze the recording but gave up, saying the quality of the recording was too poor
.

O'Mara's motion does not identify which experts he's challenging, but two audio experts analyzed the voice on the tape last year for the Orlando Sentinel, and both concluded it was not Zimmerman. Prosecutors put them both, Tom Owen, chairman emeritus of the American Board of Recorded Evidence, and Ed Primeau, an audio engineer from Rochester Hills, Mich., on their witness list.

Owen is a courtroom veteran, but in his analysis of the voice on that 911 recording used a new software program he had developed. He removed all other sound from the recording, except for the cries for help, and using biometrics, compared it to a recording of Zimmerman's voice and concluded it was not him. Owen came to no conclusion about who it was.

Primeau used a different technique, based on audio enhancement and human analysis, and concluded the voice belonged to Trayvon because it was "a young man screaming"

First George Zimmerman trial subpoena goes out
7:24 p.m. EDT, May 7, 2013

SANFORD - In yet another sign that the George Zimmerman second-degree murder trial is just weeks away, today the first trial subpoena was returned to the Seminole County Courthouse.

It is for Jeffrey Morales, custodian of records at the Seminole County Jail. Special Prosecutor Angela Corey sent it to him Friday, ordering him to be ready to appear June 10 or any day thereafter as long as the trial lasts.

June 10 is the day it's to begin. It's not clear how long it will last. On Tuesday, defense attorney Mark O'Mara predicted jury selection would take two to three weeks and the rest of the trial another two to three weeks.

It's not clear why prosecutors have subpoenaed the head of records at the jail where Zimmerman was locked up for several weeks, but he is likely among hundreds of witnesses who are being notified to get ready to appear.

Your own black box

Inspired by Trayvon Martin, four Amherst undergrads create a "black box for humans"
By Jason Gilbert | Yahoo! News – Tue, May 7, 2013.

ORLANDO—Is it time for humans to get their own black box?

That’s the provocative question behind an ambitious project by four undergraduate engineering students from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, presented at this weekend's Cornell Cup in Orlando, Fla. Over the course of a school year, the Amherst team built a prototype “black box for humans” that you could carry around wherever you went, and could be activated to record audio of your surroundings in case you ran into trouble.

New Zimmerman motions: Defense wants anonymous jury; state wants to question Shellie
5:16 p.m. EDT, May 9, 2013

The day before the deadline for pre-trial motions in the George Zimmerman case, there was a flurry of filings Thursday.

George Zimmerman's attorneys filed paperwork asking his judge to allow trial jurors to visit the scene of Trayvon Martin's shooting, and also to sequester his jury and keep their identities of a secret.

Meanwhile, prosecutors filed a motion asking Circuit Judge Debra Nelson to order Zimmerman's wife, Shellie, to answer questions in a pre-trial deposition.

The defense argues visiting the shooting scene would allow jurors to better understand the vantage point of individual eye- and ear-witnesses.

That request is unusual but not unprecedented. Typically, when a judge agrees to such an outing, he or she orders a van or bus to transport jurors together.

What the state doesn't want said of Trayvon Martin at trial
Last Updated: Monday, May 13, 2013, 11:53 AM

SANFORD --
A slew of new documents released ahead of the George Zimmerman trial include a list of items the state doesn't want mentioned about Trayvon Martin to the jury, including his performance in school, whether he ever owned or wore a false set of gold teeth, and whether he had ever allegedly been in a fight before the night he was killed.

A total of twelve new documents were made public Monday by the defense, all filed Friday ahead of a deadline for court filings in the Zimmerman trial, set for June 10 in Seminole County.

———————————————

State's motion in limine* regarding Trayvon Martin

Here, the state asks the court to prohibit any mention during trial of "certain facts or opinions associated with Trayvon Martin," including:
Had ever been suspended from school
Had previously used or communicated about marijuana
Had ever allegedly been in a fight
Had ever posted or had "screen names" on social media
Had ever possessed or worn a set of false gold teeth
Any aspect of Martin's school records, or his performance in school
Any text messages Martin sent or received before the day he was shot
Any text messages Martin sent or received on Feb. 26, 2012, "until the relevance and admissibility of the same has been ruled upon by the court."

The state argues such evidence is irrelevant to the trial and the events surrounding his death.

(* A motin "in limine," from a Latin phrase meaning "at the start," is filed to include or exclude certain evidence from trial.)

What the state doesn't want said of Trayvon Martin at trial
Last Updated: Monday, May 13, 2013, 11:53 AM

[PREVIOUS UPDATE -- 10:30 a.m.]

George Zimmerman's legal team has released a slew of last-minute court documents filed before Friday's deadline, including one asking to permit testimony by video at an upcoming hearing, saying the defense cannot afford to fly in out-of-state expert witnesses.

In the motion, attorney Mark O'Mara said the defense "does not have the sufficient funds to pay the witnesses for their travel and extended time, and containment costs."

The new documents, released Monday, also include a defense motion asking for permission to add two more unnamed witnesses to their list. All witnesses were supposed to be disclosed by April 17.

Monday's release also included nine motions filed by the state, including one to limit or exclude "improper opinion evidence," one calling for a protective order regarding toxicology reports of Trayvon Martin, and one requesting a ban of evidence at trial that Zimmerman had not previously been convicted of a felony.

In addition to these motions, at the next hearing, scheduled Tuesday, May 28, Judge Debra Nelson is also set to hear arguments on previous motions that were filed asking that the jury be allowed to go the scene of killing in Sanford and a request to keep the jury anonymous.

Audio of the 911 call at the link

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/trayvon-martin/os-george-zimmerman-trial-voice-20130514,0,2122283.story

State audio experts differ on Trayvon's, Zimmerman's voice in 911 screams
12:34 p.m. EDT, May 14, 2013

Two new reports from state audio experts came to different conclusions about the screams of someone crying for help just before 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot:

One said it was Trayvon. The other said some of the screams likely came from Trayvon while others came from the shooter, George Zimmerman.

That evidence was made public today, but it remains to be seen whether jurors will hear about it at Zimmerman's trial, which begins June 10 in Sanford.

In audio from a neighbor's 911 call, someone can be heard crying for help. Then comes a gunshot, and the cries stop.

Last week, Zimmerman's attorneys filed paperwork asking Circuit Judge Debra S. Nelson to hold a hearing to determine the scientific validity of the work done by state voice experts. That may take place May 28, the next-scheduled hearing.

Orlando defense attorney and legal commentator Richard Hornsby, who is not associated with the case, said that at such a hearing, the judge would determine whether the experts' conclusions are based on methods and technology "commonly accepted within their particular scientific or expert community" as reliable.

Even if the evidence is deemed admissible in Zimmerman's trial, his defense attorneys would likely attack it either by questioning the experts' motives or methods on cross examination, by calling experts with contrary opinions, or both, Hornsby said.

The state argues voice identification techniques are well established, and a hearing is unnecessary.

FBI voice analysts were unable to identify the source of the cries, saying the quality was too poor.

Sanford residents say George Zimmerman, Trayvon Martin case more than a trial
Published On: May 16 2013 05:43:10 PM EDT   Updated On: May 16 2013 06:57:37 PM EDT

SANFORD, Fla. -
The city of Sanford is making final preparations for the George Zimmerman trial, which residents say is a critical moment for their city.

Residents tell Local 6 the Zimmerman trial goes beyond 17-year-old Trayvon Martin's death and that a lot is on the line with Zimmerman's fate.

"Quite a bit has been going on in Sanford and there are a lot of people that are angry about things that have been going on in the city," said Faye Henderson of the Sanford Museum and Welcome Center.

Terri Moore, who was born and raised in Sanford, says the trial represents not only  Martin's death but all of the unsolved murders in Sanford that residents feel police  didn't do enough.

Some believe that, whether it's right or wrong, portions of their community are pinning years of perceived injustices on a single trial--Zimmerman's second-degree murder trial.

George Zimmerman's wife files trial witnesses list that includes sister-in-law, brother-in-law
3:52 p.m. EDT, May 16, 2013

SANFORD – George Zimmerman's wife, who is facing a perjury charge, has filed a witness list that includes her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, the couple who helped her husband set up a fund-raising website and manage the money that came flooding in.

The defense witness list, filed Monday by defense attorney Kelly Sims, includes eight names. Sims said they are all state witnesses.

They include George Zimmerman's sister, her husband; two credit union employees, a court reporter, a Lake Mary woman and two investigators with the office of Special Prosecutor Angela Corey.

Shellie Zimmerman, 26, is to be tried after her husband. His second-degree murder trial is slated to begin June 10.

Will judge delay Zimmerman trial after new evidence?
Zimmerman defense to ask for more time
UPDATED 9:02 PM EDT May 16, 2013

SANFORD, Fla. —George Zimmerman's defense confirmed to WESH 2 that they will move forward with a new motion to delay his upcoming murder trial.

The issue centers on a new report from a state expert just made public Tuesday.

The state's expert voice analyst brings a new type of voice-recognition evidence to the trial.

WESH 2 legal analyst and attorney Jeff Dean said the new evidence is enough to grant the delay.

“You've got someone who professes to be an expert who is going to talk about things no one can hear but him,” Dean said.

Zimmerman's attorneys want time to challenge the validity of the evidence.

Zimmerman attorneys: Jurors should hear about Trayvon's pot use
7:06 p.m. EDT, May 21, 2013

Trayvon Martin brought marijuana with him to Sanford from South Florida, according to new paperwork filed Tuesday by George Zimmerman's attorney, and used it at least once before he was killed.

Two weeks ago, prosecutors filed paperwork asking Circuit Judge Debra S. Nelson to ban defense attorneys and witnesses from telling jurors that autopsy blood samples taken from Trayvon tested positive for marijuana use.

Defense attorney Don West filed his written response Tuesday: That information is relevant, so jurors should know about it.

Nelson will likely rule on it during a day-long hearing May 28 in Sanford.

According to West's three-page response, a state toxicologist, Dr. Bruce Goldberger, determined that the amount of marijuana in Trayvon's system was enough to cause some impairment, although not enough to get him arrested for DUI, had he been behind the wheel of a car.

Trayvon may have used marijuana a couple of hours before his death or longer if he were an occasional or regular user, West quoted Goldberger as saying.

In addition, West wrote that attorneys have learned that Trayvon brought marijuana with him from South Florida to Sanford a few days before his shooting and used it at least once during his stay there.

All of that is relevant, West wrote, because Zimmerman told a police dispatcher shortly before shooting Trayvon that he believed the Miami Gardens teenager was suspicious and may have been on drugs.
