Head of local New Black Panther Party arrested by Jacksonville police
Posted: May 22, 2013 - 8:24am  |  Updated: May 22, 2013 - 12:28pm

The 50-year-old southern regional representative of Jacksonville’s New Black Panther Party for Self Defense was arrested Monday on charges of false imprisonment and resisting an officer without violence, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Mikhail Shareef Muhammad of North Myrtle Avenue remained held on $200,000 bail Wednesday, according to jail records.

Police were called just after 2 p.m. by a friend of Muhammad’s wife, Claudia Lizeth, who said he wasn’t willing to let her leave and was afraid for her life, according to the arrest report. Officers went to Muhammad’s home, where Lizeth mouthed, “Help me” to a sergeant.

Muhammad’s organization protests racism and wants to “develop complete constructive change amongst our people and to defend our rights,” according to its national organization’s website, www.newblackpanther.com. Some of its recent Florida activities have included seeking the resignation of Jacksonville Councilwoman Kimberly Daniels and offering a $10,000 reward for the “capture” of George Zimmerman shortly after the fatal shooting of Sanford teenager Trayvon Martin last year.

Defense releases photos, texts of Trayvon Martin
By MIKE SCHNEIDER | Associated Press – 1 hr 14 mins ago

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — George Zimmerman's defense attorneys on Thursday released information from 17-year-old Trayvon Martin's cellphone that include the teen texting with a friend about smoking marijuana and photos that show him blowing smoke and extending his middle finger to the camera.
The release came ahead of a hearing that will determine whether the texts and photos can be used at the trial for Zimmerman, who is charged with fatally shooting Martin last year during a confrontation at a gated community in Sanford. He is pleading not guilty to second-degree murder, claiming self-defense. His trial starts next month.
The photos also show a gun and what appears to be a potted marijuana plant.
In the text messages, Martin tells a friend that his mother has told him he needs to move out of her house and move in with his father since he was caught skipping school. He also talks with a friend about smoking "weed."

"Is the defense trying to prove Trayvon deserved to be killed by George Zimmerman because (of) the way he looked?" they said. "If so, this stereotypical and closed-minded thinking is the same mindset that caused George Zimmerman to get out of his car and pursue Trayvon, an unarmed kid who he didn't know."

Please direct me to the part of the 911 call where the dispatcher tells GZ to stand down?

The dispatcher said "We don't need you to do that" It's a suggestion, NOT an order.

So what happened after George said OK? According to the police report and according to George, he started heading back to his vehicle.”

O’Brien stressed again, “He [911 dispatcher] said, ‘are you [Zimmerman] following him’ and he [Zimmerman] said ‘yes.’ That’s the transcript of that tape. ‘Are you following him,’ and he said ‘Yes.’”

Oliver said, “And then the dispatcher – and he said ‘Yes’ – and then the dispatcher said ‘you don’t have to do that. We don’t need you to do that.’ And George responded, ‘OK.’”

I don't think we know the whole thing.  Hopefully it will come out in the trial.

George Zimmerman attorneys ask for six-week trial delay
6:33 p.m. EDT, May 23, 2013

Attorneys for George Zimmerman today filed paperwork, asking the judge to delay the start of his trial for six weeks.

Defense attorneys last week said they'd ask for a delay because they need more time to hire an audio expert to counter the testimony of a state witness, who's expected to testify that the voice heard screaming for help in the background of a 911 call was Trayvon.

They filed paperwork, making the request today.

Circuit Judge Debra S. Nelson has twice said no to trial delays. She's expected to rule on the latest request Tuesday.

Also today, defense attorney Mark O'Mara filed new paperwork, again accusing prosecutors of hiding evidence that would help his client.

This time, he alleges that Assistant State Attorney Bernie de la Rionda lied to the judge when he told her April 30 that he had no other information or data from Trayvon's cell phone.

He did, O'Mara wrote, and they include photos of marijuana plants, a semiautomatic pistol plus text messages in which Trayvon wrote about being in a fight and asking about guns.

The judge previously ruled that de la Rionda had not violated rules of criminal procedure by withholding evidence, but she put off until after Zimmerman's trial ruling on whether the prosecutor should have to reimburse defense attorneys for the added work required to find out what he had failed to disclose.

I'm watching this part about disclosure (or failure of disclosure) by the prosecution very carefully.  There was a case in Texas that put an innocent man behind bars for 25 years, and it had a lot to do with the prosecution failing to disclose evidence.  In this case, it's known that George Zimmerman did shoot Trayvon Martin (no one is disputing that), but under what circumstances?  We need the truth.  Why withhold this information or evidence?  I find it's not enough to get a conviction.  You need to convict the right person (in the  TX case of Michael Morton, the wrong person was convicted), but in the case of George Zimmerman, you need to look at the facts and evidence and hopefully on the basis of that, if there was wrong doing, he should be prosecuted and convicted.  This case is a LOT more than than just a man shooting another.  Folks tend to make this case be what they want it to be.  Let's get the facts out there.  There's already been way too much misinformation imo.  There's a lot we don't know.  In the case of Michael Morton in TX, the prosecutor is facing trial and possible charges.  Some people want to go ahead and be judge, jury and executioner and seem to know all the facts and are ready to hang George Zimmerman and we aren't even at trial yet.  I believe transparency and truth is important.  JMHO

I think what happened was BDLR purposely would not give MOM the evidence that he needed and MOM had to find out information on his own and that is why the judge is saying BDLR may have to reemburse MOM etc.

Seems to me BDLR wants only his truth to come out which is: Trayvon was a 12 year old skittle eating child who was walking home from 7-11 and GZ was a racist, who hated black people  and profiled TM because of his skin color and shot and killed him for no reason.

I believe most everyone has only wanted a fair trial.  There may be a small few who want to act as judge, jury, and executioner but no one I know.  Sadly, there are also people who automatically believe Trayvon instigated his own death without knowing all the evidence, even believing the news report that he lay in a morgue for days before his parents claimed his body.  Wonder why Trayvon's parents aren't suing the media outlet over that report like Zimmerman is suing NBC?  Maybe they aren't as money hungry as the public is being led to believe?

Thankfully we have a trial scheduled and all the evidence will be heard, which is all Trayvon's parents have wanted from the beginning.

In the end, no matter what the outcome, my prayers are for all the innocents who have been affected by this tragedy.  I also pray that the truth is revealed, whatever that may be.

Crump: Don't unseal the $1 million-plus settlement Trayvon's parents received
12:34 p.m. EDT, April 15, 2013

Benjamin Crump has formally asked Circuit Judge Debra S. Nelson to make sure the specific amount of the $1 million-plus settlement Trayvon Martin's parents reached with George Zimmerman's home owners' association be kept secret.
 ::snipping2::
On April 5, Seminole County Clerk of Courts Maryanne Morse notified Crump that she intended to unseal it, saying it did not meet the legal standard of a confidential filing.

Morse today said that Nelson will now decide whether it should be unsealed. It's not clear when she will rule.
 ::snipping2::
In paperwork made public today, Crump called O'Mara's suggestion that Tracy Martin had a financial motive to change his story "unintelligible" and "devoid of merit."

He changed his story, Crump wrote, because he has since heard a clearer version of the recording and when he first heard it, was in "an extreme emotional state."

Crump asked the judge to only block the payment amount from public view.

Keeping it secret "is essential to avoid irreparable harm in the negotiations and exposure of other claims/lawsuits," Crump wrote.

He might have if he was the one who first confronted Zimmerman.

Ultimately, I believe TM's parents failed him and failed him miserably.

He did not deserve to be killed but (as far as I know) his own actions that night caused him to be killed.

He could have made it home well before GZ got off the phone with the 911 operator.

Why he chose to come back is anyone's guess.

There are a LOT of woulda coulda shoulda going around.
