Mouton said Sunday afternoon police were not ready to reveal the exact condition of the bicycle or where exactly it was found, except to say that it was under the I-10 Atchafalaya Basin Bridge.

On Sunday, authorities from the Lafayette Police Department, Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office, Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana State Police and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, along with other assisting agencies, scoured the area, looking for any other items that might belong to Shunick.

They said she was spotted going in a different direction then going home..

a thought on mickey route home,im thinking she wasnt going home just yet, maybe making
a detour, for whatever reason,if you look at the bike route link, you can see there is a better way,
to ride your bike home from ryan st, to get to her home. from the gas station route ,it would be
a bit zig zaggy,if you used side streets,johnston st is a 4lane,it has a bike lane,but at 2am, would
be a little scary, and it just looks like the long way around from ryan to home
this is where she should have made a turn, for the more zig zaggy route,  http://goo.gl/maps/6Op2
here is where the bike lane ends,on johnston ST RT 167,  http://goo.gl/maps/Hcj5

Police: Missing student's bike found under bridge
May 27, 2012

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — A missing Lafayette woman's bicycle was found Sunday in a remote, swampy area under a highway bridge in Iberville Parish, about 25 miles from the spot where she had last been seen eight days earlier.
 ::snipping2::
Search dogs were set to work under the bridge and St. Martin Parish sheriff's deputies rode all-terrain vehicles in the woods and along the treeline, and a Louisiana State Police helicopter flew low over the area, The Advertiser reported (http://bit.ly/KVxo15 ).

Mouton said fishermen called a tip line on Sunday to say they'd seen the bicycle under the Interstate 10 bridge at Exit 127, called the Whiskey Bay exit, he said.

If the information had not been out as it was, based on what the fishermen found, they may not have filed anything,” Cpl. Mouton, noted. “I don’t believe they would have called in anything because there was trash around it [the bike].”

Police say they are still seeking information about the vehicles of interest. Police are trying to find the route that the vehicle may have taken to get the bike to that area.

“We’re going to be out here as long as it takes for us to find something,” Cpl. Mouton, noted.

Police have asked the public to stay out of the area so they can complete their search.

Anyone with information should call the Lafayette Police Department at (337) 291-8633.

Cartfly- the report I posted is that there was trash around the bike.  The area that it was found in, is it a normal place for people to dump trash?  Wondering if the trash was to cover up the bike, or if the trash was there and the bike was placed in it to conceal it.

Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1984.  Its 15,000 acres are part of the
largest bottomland hardwood swamp in the country.  This beautiful swampland offers a multitude

of recreational options.  Hunting, fishing, hiking  and some of the best wildlife viewing
opportunities
in the country exist in the Atchafalaya Basin. The refuge is managed cooperatively
with the
Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sherburne Wildlife Management Area and
the Corps
of Engineers Atchafalaya Spillway Water Diversion Project

The bike's condition was not released and authorities began searching the river by boat. Divers planned to go in when the current became less strong.

I would think it would be trash like cans, paper etc either from someone just throwing something off the bridge or careless fisherman. It is a very rural area. If I remember right there is a boat launch there where trash from the basin would wash up and build up in areas of the boat launch. People tend to be lazy and just dump stuff of course or the trash cans or full and the wind blows it around. I am thinking that if this person took the time to take that exit to dump the bike, that she will be found there as well or further down in the basin. I hate saying this because I would love to find a live Mickey but we all know from following these cases how they "usually" end up. I hope to be proven wrong.

Another thing is (if I remember right) this is the last exit when traveling to Baton Rouge. So it would be the place to "turn around" to head back to Lafayette otherwise you are stuck on that bridge till you get close to Baton Rouge. The bridge is about 20 miles long and there are cameras on the bridge,  as well as the exits from what I understand. This area is home to one of the biggest swamp areas and a wildlife management area (wooded area). Unless this person had a boat, I think she will be found close. It would have taken someone less than 10-15 minutes to have abducted her, headed up University Ave to I-10. Then the Whiskey Bay exit would of taken someone another 20-35 minutes to reach from Lafayette at I-10.

Praying for the divers safety. They will have zero visibility in that river as well as fishing lines and trash to contend with.

Sigh~ IF there is a large wildlife population, there's no telling what may be recovered of Mickey's body.  Hate to sound macabre, but we all know about natures food chain.

Thanks CW! I was able to see the boat launch area from your map in street view and clicking on photos. It also looks like from the picture you posted of Le at the location, that it was right under the bridge area where the bike was located almost as if someone stopped on I-10 and tossed it from above rather than exiting. Thanks for the maps Smile

The wild life is very large in the area. But when we have been on the highway going over the swamp land we have seen boats out fishing.
