Montreal police confirms newly-found body part is 'fake' foot

Edit to add article publication date.  MB June 6, 2012
Quote
Montreal police said on its Twitter account that the foot was "not a human foot," following news early Wednesday that the item had been recovered from the city's Notre-Dame-de-Grace neighborhood.
"The foot found in N-D-G is a fake. It's not a human foot," police said on Twitter.

Police say note found in at least one Vancouver body parts package
June 6, 2012 4:12 PM

MONTREAL — Police investigating the grisly killing of a Chinese student said Wednesday that mailed packages containing the victim's body parts also included notes.

The case was discovered last week when Jun Lin's left hand and left foot were mailed to Canada's top political parties. The investigation spread to the other end of the country this week as more body parts were mailed from Montreal to two schools in Vancouver. Those parcels contained a right hand and a right foot, and police said they would conduct DNA tests to confirm a match, Montreal Police Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere said.

"They were the same limbs we were looking for," Lafreniere said. The victim's head is still unaccounted for.

Lafreniere said the parcels mailed to the Conservative and Liberal parties, and at least one of the Vancouver packages contained a note. He declined to say to whom they were addressed, or what they said, for fear of encouraging copycat crimes.

Former schools not worried about Magnotta mail
 June 06, 2012 03:54 PM EDT

TORONTO - Principals at Toronto schools once attended by alleged body part killer Luka Magnotta aren’t on high alert after body parts were delivered to Vancouver schools.

A foot and a hand were delivered from Montreal to Vancouver schools Tuesday. Montreal police believe they belonged to murdered Chinese student Jun Lin and have taken over the investigation

With the two packages received yesterday it is possible that the poor man's head is still in the mail somewhere.  I am baffled on how the last two packages made it through the postal system without someone along the way questioning an odor, flies, or liquid which had to be associated with the packages.

Fake 'foot' found on Montreal street just a bad joke
Wednesday, June 6, 2012

MONTREAL - A Halloween prop of a human foot placed on a Montreal street in a neighbourhood near where Luka Magnotta is suspected of killing and dismembering Jun Lin two weeks ago was someone's idea of a joke, say Montreal police.

A passerby discovered the phoney body part at 7:30 a.m. on Saint-Jacques Street in the west-end Notre-Dame-de-Grace neighbourhood, prompting initial fears that it was linked to the Magnotta case, or worse - that there might be a copycat at work.

Police cordoned off the area until discovering it was nothing more than a Halloween prop.

Montreal police Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere told reporters that it was likely a stunt, and not a very good one

Luka Rocco Magnotta 'fearing for his safety' in Berlin prison, lawyer reveals
June 6, 2012 4:09 PM

Luka Rocco Magnotta's German court-appointed lawyer says her client is "afraid he will be attacked by other prisoners" inside a Berlin jail because media reports make him out to be a "really, really bad person."

Magnotta has been transferred to an old Berlin prison where he is kept separate from other prisoners 23 hours a day, Evelyn Ascher told the CBC in an interview.

The lawyer also told reporters that Magnotta was "nice and polite" and didn't seem like the "psychopath" she read about.

Magnotta, 29, was transferred to a Berlin prison Tuesday after spending a night in a police station holding cell following his arrest Monday. He was arrested by seven Berlin police officers after an internet cafe employee spotted the fugitive reading stories about himself online.

Berlin police said Magnotta has slept soundly in his 1.5 metre by 5-metre solitary cell. Police initially said his only request was for someone to light his cigarette and he seemed "quiet."

CANADIAN OFFICIALS PATIENTLY WAITING BY THE MAIL FOR THE REST OF LUKA MAGNOTTA’S PACKAGES
June 6 2012

Ottawa, Canada – The case of Luka Magnotta, the Canadian man who recorded himself slaughtering his lover and then mailing his remains to the government, will surely go down as one of the more bizarre murder case in recent history, if not all of history.

True, there have been much more vicious murders and murderers in history but the sheer weirdness of the acts committed by Magnotta make his acts stand out like few others. Now with Magnotta in custody a huge and very important part of that story has been concluded but, unfortunately for police, other very important parts are still missing.

The most important part of that puzzle is apparently the head of Magnotta’s victim. While the bulk of the victim, Jun Lin, was found in a Montreal apartment other pieces were missing. Some, of course, were sent to government officials and now two more packages have shown up at schools in Vancouver. Those deliveries nearly complete the puzzle of Lin and Magnotta, but officials are still keeping a keen out for at least one more package, one containing the all-important head of Lin, hoping against hope that it hasn’t been lost somewhere in the mail.

 ::snipping2::

The RCMP, Canada’s national police force, has been keeping any eye on all head-sized packages passing through the mail system over the last few days.

New videos emerge in 'Canadian Psycho' case
New videos circulating on the Internet of a Canadian porn actor accused of killing and carving up a Chinese student appear to be credible, but a probe is ongoing, Montreal police said Wednesday.
Wed, 06 Jun 2012 19:46:52 GMT

"All we can say is that we've seen the videos and they appear to be authentic," police spokesman Ian Lafreniere told AFP.

"But we have to ensure the videos' veracity and figure out when they were filmed," Lafreniere added.

Luka Rocco Magnotta, who has been dubbed the "Canadian Psycho" after allegedly killing and dismembering male Chinese student Lin Jun last month, is believed to have filmed the crime.

That video was posted on the Internet before the suspect fled Canada.

But Magnotta, 29, is suspected of having posting new videos following his arrival in France on May 26. The suspect then headed to Germany, where he was arrested at an Internet cafe in Berlin on Monday.

In one posted on YouTube, a seemingly cavalier Magnotta is smoking and says: "What's up and hi to all my fans" while Madonna's song "La Isla Bonita" plays in the background.

In another posting, the suspect appears to be filming himself while music from the band New Order plays. And a third video shows him in a dark apartment peeking out the window.

Slain student's family in Montreal
Updated: 2012-06-07 03:20

Relatives of Lin Jun, the Chinese student who was brutally murdered by the suspect dubbed the "Canadian Psycho", arrived in Montreal on Wednesday morning, according to Xu Zheng, a spokesman at the Chinese consulate in Montreal.

Xu told reporters that four of Lin Jun's family members, including his parents, sister, and uncle, have arrived in the city to deal with the aftermath of Lin's gruesome death.

According to the Canadian Press, Lin's family was scheduled to meet with Montreal police on Wednesday to discuss the investigation.

The consulate has sent two officials to assist Lin's family, according to previous report. And the consulate said it will coordinate with Canadian government, schools, and mobilize local students and civil organizations to offer any form of help.

According to sources close to the family, Lin's parents are divorced.

Magnotta had 70 Facebook pages: cops
 June 6, 2012

MONTREAL - Man of many disguises, man of many Facebook pages.

Luka Magnotta had a massive presence on the world's most popular social-networking site, said Montreal police Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere.

"The suspect is present on more than 70 Facebook pages," he told reporters Wednesday.

"He maintained more than 70 Facebook pages under different names. So he was very, very, very active on the web."

Youtube clips, personal web pages, gore websites and blogs are just some of the digital media the former stripper and porn actor used to boost his cyberspace profile.

As Luka Rocco Magnotta’s alleged victim blogged about his cat, promos appeared for ’1 Lunatic, 1 Ice Pick’

Jun 7, 2012 – 7:05 PM ET

Ten days prior to his horrific murder, Jun Lin was posting on his blog about his cat Andy, the iPhone, fashion and other innocuous topics. At the same time, another person was posting promotional materials for the video that would allegedly show Lin’s death, including an image of the ice pick that may have killed him.

Lin, 33, wrote some 1,000 posts on the Chinese blogging site Weibo, initially talking about how much he was looking forward to living in Canada, although some of his posts sound lonely at times.

There is no mention of Luka Rocco Magnotta, the man police suspect in Lin’s slaying and dismemberment — which was posted online — in the blog posts.

Meanwhile, Lin’s parents say they have come to Montreal “to take him home” as police await the grim results from DNA testing on the body parts sent from Montreal to two Vancouver schools.

 ::snipping2::

Ten days prior to Lin’s murder, someone began posting about a video called “1 lunatic, 1 ice pick.” That is the name of the video that police say shows Lin being stabbed to death, his limbs cut off and his decapitated body sexually assaulted.

One YouTube video — posted under the name alexisvaloranreich (the name of the transgendered woman who as John Mark Karr claimed to have killed JonBenét Ramsey) — shows the picture of a young man holding an ice pick, his face obscured by a purple hoodie, standing in front of a poster of the film Casablanca.

Luka Rocco Magnotta's possible link to L.A. homicide probed by police
June 7, 2012 4:52 PM

MONTREAL — The widespread travels of Luka Rocco Magnotta, both geographically and on the World Wide Web, are fuelling speculation he may have killed elsewhere.

Montreal police are working with the Los Angeles Police Department to determine whether Magnotta could have been involved in the murder and beheading of a 66-year-old man in California in January. The head of Hervey Medellin was discovered near the famous Hollywood sign by a woman walking her dog on Jan. 17. A police search turned up Medellin's hands and feet in the area, but the rest of his body remains missing.

 ::snipping2::

Montreal police said Magnotta, a porn movie actor and male escort, may have been in Los Angeles at the time of Medellin's murder. Sun U.K. news reported a Los Angeles pimp claims to have hired Magnotta around that time, and that one of Magnotta's Facebook pages offered his services as a masseuse in Los Angeles weeks after the murder.

Plus, he`s called the Monster of Montreal. Tonight this just-captured suspected killer speaks to his so-called fans. He posted the online clips while on the run just before his capture. Did cops ignore repeated pleas to arrest Luka Magnotta years ago?

This as cops say school employees are still reeling from the shock of opening packages sent by Magnotta containing a human foot and a human hand. We`ll investigate.
 ::snipping2::

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: A bizarre case gets even more bizarre in Canada. Vancouver police are investigating two disturbing incidents.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Luka Rocco Magnotta, the porn actor accused of killing and dismembering a man in Canada.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The first package containing what appeared to be a human hand.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is a really traumatic and difficult situation for absolutely everybody.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Human remains were discovered in separate packages mailed to two local area schools this afternoon.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: The victim`s head is still missing tonight.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We`re still missing the head. The head is still missing.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: The porn star fugitive has now been captured.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Having indecently abused the corpse of the man he killed, his former boyfriend.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We`ve now learned that the suspect videotaped the dismemberment of his victim.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It`s a real human being, getting decapitated in front of the video, in front of the camera.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I believe that he was showing off his work.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The torso found stuffed in a suitcase behind an apartment in Montreal.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We`re talking about the same body parts that we were looking for which is the right hand and the right foot.

Another package containing what appeared to be a human foot.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I knew he was really strange and he creeped me out for sure.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Tonight, new developments in the severed body parts sent to children`s schools; police believe they`re connected to a dismembered murder victim in Montreal but the victim`s head still missing.

Now, new secrets and clues emerge that might tell us where the suspect sent that skull. This is the school in Vancouver where a human foot was delivered in the mail. That same day a hand arrives at another school.

Police say it`s likely these limbs are from the same victim of suspected killer Luka Magnotta, a porn star who dismembered a former lover and then ate parts of his flesh and even had sex with the corpse.

Last week a left foot was sent to Canada`s Prime Minister at the headquarters of the Conservative Party. Shortly afterwards, another package found, this one with a left hand to the Liberal Party headquarters. Then a human torso found in a suitcase outside Magnotta`s apartment. He had already fled the country by that point.

Then yesterday a right hand and right foot delivered to those schools in Vancouver, Canada; but the most crucial body part, the victim`s head still missing. Where will it show up? Is it his ultimate trophy?

Magnotta arrested Monday, Berlin, an Internet cafe, he was caught reading his own news reports, reports about himself. Over the weekend new video released of the suspect -- watch this from YouTube, Magnotta talks to the quote, unquote "fans" of his while a Madonna song blares in the background.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

LUKA ROCCO MAGNOTTA, MURDER SUSPECT: What`s up? And hi to all my fans.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, he looks demonic to me. This isn`t the first time he`s taped himself. He`s been sought for years for allegedly killing kittens on camera and posted the videos online.

"The Sun" the newspaper, reports they got one of those horrific videos in an e-mail where somebody claiming to be Magnotta wrote this warning, quote, "Once you kill and taste blood it`s impossible to stop," end quote. The e-mail continued, "I`ll be back and this time the victims won`t be animals.

Was he foreshadowing killings to come? Call me at 1877-JVM-SAYS.
Straight out to Joe Warmington, reporter for Sun News Network; Joe, what do you know about these ominous foreshadowing e-mails? The Sun says they showed the e-mails to cops months ago and were ignored.

JOE WARMINGTON, REPORTER, SUN NEWS NETWORK: I know, that`s the scary thing about it is that nobody took this guy seriously. And he was definitely crying out, Jane, for people to pay attention to what he was thinking in his escalations. And you can see in that video that smug and satisfied look on his face.

You know, I don`t know when that was filmed, but I suspect that it was when he was on the run. As for this business of the feet and all that, the West Coast they have nine other feet that have been found out there, so who knows what this is all about.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Oh, yes. They`re looking at all of the unsolved cases tonight. Now, when I look at his face I see what I -- I just feel -- I get the creeps and it`s like looking at evil.

Animal rights activists had been hunting Magnotta for years because of the countless kitten mutilation videos he allegedly posted online. Just six months ago, PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals offered a reward and delivered a chilling omen. It read, "PETA is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the demented or vicious coward responsible for these heinous acts. The pain and fear that these cats must have experienced is unimaginable. Anyone capable of such sadism poses a danger to us all," end quote.

Ingrid Newkirk is with us tonight. I`m very honored to have her. She`s the president of PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Ingrid, you tried to warn people. You tried to warn police? Would it be fair to say that you predicted this, in essence?

INGRID NEWKIRK, PRESIDENT, PEOPLE FOR THE ETHICAL TREATMENT OF ANIMALS: Well, it`s not too hard to predict, Jane. Every serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer, Son of Sam, all the school shooters have a history of vicious cruelty to animals. And it`s their past (ph). If they`re not stopped, if this behavior isn`t corrected -- and I think law enforcement is gradually, but too slowly getting this lesson -- then it`s going to escalate.

It`s bad enough for the animals, but people want to be more empowered and take out this violence on human beings in the end.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, I call this reactive justice. There were many, many warning signs. Jon Leiberman, hundreds and hundreds of videos of this sicko bragging. He was sending e-mails to people bragging about killing cats and the cops refused to take it seriously.

JON LEIBERMAN, INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER: You know, we even found a blog that this guy -- police believe he posted -- called necrophiliac serial killer Luka Magnotta, in which he confesses to liking sex with corpses. He says, "I don`t see myself as some creepy pervert. I`m just someone who has feelings, real feelings for dead men." That was posted on his blog.

This is a major part of the investigation because cops are looking back at all of these videos online. Right now, they also want to know did he have any help, after the killing, did he have any help to get to the airport, to get out of country there in Canada. So this is a worldwide investigation now and police are looking to see if he had any help.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes. Well, I have to say, one of the scariest questions for me is did he have other victims? You heard what Ingrid said about serial killers always start with animals? This guy -- police are wondering, is he a serial killer? Listen to this.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is far from being over. The investigation has brought us to the suspect. Now we will get of other questions beside that. Is there other possible homicide or other crime linked to that person? That will be investigated by our investigators, that`s for sure.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: We looked it up, there`s five unsolved missing cases of Montreal in the past year. These are the faces of those five missing individuals. Of the five, there are four men and one woman -- 19 to 55.

Wendy Murphy, former prosecutor, do you think we`re at the tip of the iceberg?

WENDY MURPHY, FORMER PROSECUTOR: Oh, yes. Well, who knows for sure, but a guy like this doesn`t go from kittens to not only dismembering a body, but mailing it out. There`s got to be stuff in the middle and you know, unfortunately the victims aren`t around to tell us the story. But I do hope that people start to connect the dots in this.

You know, clearly what worries me here is that this guy was not under the influence of drugs but under the influence of Jeffrey Dahmer. And what I`m worried about is that he`s going to be able to take advantage of this apparent space of similar kinds of behavior and say at his trial, poor me, I was under the influence of bath salts or God forbid, I was abused as a child which may have something to do with why he was sending body parts to schools where little kids were.

I don`t really care about this guy`s history. I don`t care that he was crying for attention or may have been abused as a child. We do have to, I think, get to a point in our legal system where we don`t get give discounts to guys like this.
 ::snipping2::
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MAGNOTTA: Yes. I really do enjoy my work. I get to meet new people all the time. And you know, I`m a people person, and you know, it`s worked out great for me, you know.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: That man, that was from "Naked News". He`s now accused of one of the most horrific crimes, the dismemberment killing and flesh eating and necrophilia with this victim of his.

Let`s take another look at Magnotta`s newest YouTube video. It appears to have been posted over this past weekend when this sicko was still on the run before he was caught in Germany. We still don`t know exactly when it was shot but he looks totally different than in his mug shot as he listens to the 1987 Madonna hit "La Isla Bonita".

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MAGNOTTA: What`s up and hi to all my fans?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: This sicko smoking a cigarette and talking about his fans.

Joe Warmington, clearly, he is addicted to infamy. You say that you believe you got e-mails from him while he was on the run and also your thoughts about the notes that were with the severed limbs that he sent to the schools in Canada. Do you have any idea what those notes might contain?

WARMINGTON: Well, I`m wondering about the nine feet that were found out there. It`s been a real mystery, Jane, in Canada for a while. Just these feet wash up on shore, and I`m wondering if it`s connected to that and you can be sure he`s looking at it.

As for the video, you and I talked all week about this. I mean this guy -- the narcissism and just the look of smugness on his face. Whether he filmed it before or not, I think it was designed for us to see now that he`s enjoying every minute of this thing.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes.

WARMINGTON: And that it`s really, really sick and it`s ticking me off because, you know, I interviewed him in the early days. I just wish I didn`t give him any attention at all.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes, well, don`t blame yourself. Very quickly, Jon Leiberman, this is what -- you saw the actual video of the killing and the dismemberment and the necrophilia and the flesh eating. Describe it in 10 seconds and also the lights. I can`t believe this.

LEIBERMAN: I`ve seen a lot, I`ve never seen anything like this. I mean this guy had a knife and fork in his hand looking over this beheaded corpse. It was absolutely disgusting and it was posted on Facebook; 600 likes for the murder video.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: And I have to go to Ingrid Newkirk, president of PETA because you and I are both never -- well, I am always shocked and horrified at what humanity is capable of in terms of cruelty. Do you feel that there`s a lesson here to be learned in terms of how police should handle animal cruelty?

NEWKIRK: It`s just not only police, but it`s every one of us. It`s not so much about this man. This man is the lesson, but whenever you see a narcissistic personality, the inability to empathize, to put yourself in the place of another and this bullying, this wish to control, to dominate the most vulnerable in society -- animals, the elderly, children. It`s a sign.

We need to say something and do something and not go away until somebody takes notice. This is not everything like boys will be boys. I look at people who hunt for pleasure and I wonder what goes on in their mind. If you can`t empathize, somebody needs to be looking out for you and for the community at the same time.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We said from the beginning, the web had been used by him to glorify himself and we believe that it`s the web that had brought him down.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Magnotta`s ex-girlfriend told reporters he was obsessed with serial killers and would do anything to be famous. Former prosecutor, Wendy Murphy, do you think this is sort of the end result, the extreme conclusion to our culture of narcissism and fame at any price?

MURPHY: Well, you know, I`m sitting here hoping they have some Pepto- Bismol at the studio, I`m so disgusted. I hope, Jane. I mean how much worse could it get? Eating people, sending limbs, having sex with dead people -- what`s worse? I don`t even know if there`s an answer I want to hear.

You know, I do think that we have one problem to solve at least with this kind of case which is to stop thinking about this kind of behavior as an illness that can be fixed. You and I don`t always agree about this addiction and violence. I think if you don`t have a conscience, if you have the capacity to kill animals, if you`re joking about having sex with dead bodies, you need to be locked up. I don`t care if it`s a jail cell or a hospital bed, and never be allowed to walk free in society ever.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Jamison Monroe, do you think that as an addiction specialist -- ten seconds -- people just get a pass sometimes.

JAMISON MONROE, ADDICTION SPECIALIST: I do think that -- I believe in rehabilitation over incarceration. I think that parents need to be more educated bath salts, prescription pills and the media. They need to educate themselves and they just need to spend more time with their kids.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, I think this man is very, very, very, very, very, very, very evil. And I agree with Wendy Murphy. I do believe in redemption, but at certain times people cross the line and their incomprehensible degeneracy is of such a depth that they really just don`t belong to the human race anymore. And they are evil. Evil does exist.

VELEZ-MITCHELL (voice-over): Tonight, breaking news: our show has just obtained the bizarre audition tapes of the man dubbed the Butcher of Montreal. In my exclusive interview coming up, the director who auditioned alleged decapitation killer Luka Magnotta for a modeling reality show talks about his time with the man accused of unspeakable crimes, and he shows us Luka`s audition. Judge for yourself.
 ::snipping2::
LUKA MAGNOTTA, SUSPECTED KILLER: Hi, my name is Luka. Magnotta is my last name.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Killing and dismembering a man in Canada.

MAGNOTTA: Practice makes perfect, right?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The first package containing what appeared to be a human hand.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is a really traumatic or difficult situation for absolutely everybody.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It`s a real human being getting decapitated in front of a video, in front of a camera.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I believe that he was showing off his work.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: A torso found stuffed in a suitcase behind an apartment in Montreal.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We`ve recovered the same body parts that we were looking for, which is the right hand and the right foot.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Another package containing what appeared to be a human foot.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I know he was really strange, and he freaked me out for sure.

MAGNOTTA: A lot of people tell me I`m really devastatingly good looking, so...

(END VIDEOTAPE)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Unbelievable.

Good evening. Jane Velez-Mitchell. Breaking news: we have just obtained an extraordinary video. It is really a stunning look into the mind and the motives of the so-called Butcher of Montreal.

We`ve obtained bizarre new video of porn star Luka Magnotta -- you see him right there -- the man accused of decapitating his former lover and videotaping the gruesome murder.

Now, cops say, and this is very disturbing. This is what they say happened. He stabbed the man with a pick. He dismembered him. He had sex with the corpse. He ate the flesh of his human victim. And then he mailed the severed body parts to government officials and children`s schools.

Even hardened cops are shocked, and they`re asking how does somebody get that demented? You`re looking at the individual accused of all that. How does that happen?

Well, this new video shows Magnotta well before the horrific crime, auditioning for "Cover Guy," a Canadian reality TV show some compare to "Top Model," where the winner gets a contract as an underwear model. Study this accused killer as he vies for the part.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
MAGNOTTA: Practice makes perfect, right?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: ... hair color?

MAGNOTTA: No. Actually, I just got it highlighted and changed things up a bit.

I have no problem gaining weight. I can gain weight if I need to gain weight.

I can gain muscle. Everybody can do it. You know, I can gain muscle. I can work out. I`m very determined. In every goal that I put my mind to, I surpass.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Very determined. Any goal he puts his mind to it, he does, but he didn`t get the part.

This video is adding to the theory that Magnotta is a self-obsessed and fame-crazed individual who would do anything -- anything -- to be famous.

He`s not only accused of posting the video of this brutal murder online. Cops believe he also posted video of himself on YouTube while he was on the run from an international man hunt. Here he is talking to his, quote unquote, "fans" while Madonna blares in the background.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MAGNOTTA: What`s up? And hi to all my fans.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: And there may be more videos out there.

Magnotta has created an international uproar. He was captured on Monday in Berlin at an Internet -- Internet cafe, where he was reading news stories about himself.

Cops say he committed this crime in Montreal, but he`s known to have spent time in New York, Hollywood. How does this chilling audition tape give us new insight into the mind of an alleged madman and the dark side of human nature.

Straight out to my primetime exclusive guest, the director of "Cover Guy," who auditioned Magnotta and spent time with him up close and personal, Larry Peloso.

Larry, thank you for joining us tonight. When you heard this man was a suspect in one of the most horrific crimes in recent century, a murder that -- and I hate to say it, but these are the facts of the case -- involved necrophilia and cannibalism, what was your reaction?

LARRY PELOSO, DIRECTOR, "COVER GUY": I was a little overwhelmed at first. I really didn`t believe it. I got a call to confirm that he was semifinalist on "Cover Guy."

And I remembered that he looked somewhat familiar when I first saw the reports, but I thought, no way. He was not one of our semifinalists. And that evening, I went to my records. I pulled out all the questionnaires from the 2007 auditions. And he was not one of the questionnaires we kept, so that meant he wasn`t a semifinalist.

Then I went through all the model release forms, and when I turned the page and saw his signature on the page, I had this chill that just ran right up my spine when I realized who it was, and that he had auditioned for us.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: A chill up your spine. And sir, if I can ask you, look right into the camera there as you speak to us, because we are so fascinated into -- in what you have to say.

Now, we`re going to play a little bit more of this extraordinary audition as we see the narcissist in Luka Magnotta come out. Watch it.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MAGNOTTA: A lot of people tell me I`m really devastatingly good looking, so -- everyone has their own personal opinion, but you know, I think I have what it takes, you know, to do it. I definitely do.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: OK. You`re looking at the same man that cops believe mailed body parts to various government officials and to children`s schools in order to gain infamy. Human body parts.

Larry, from the time you spent with Luka Magnotta, did you get the impression that he was so desperate for fame that he would go to any lengths to get his name out there?

PELOSO: No, I did not. I have to say I`m -- I`m extremely shocked that this same person who came in to audition for us five years ago could be the same person who would be involved in a -- in a murder.

He came across as an ordinary guy. Most of the guys that came out for the show were like body builders, tanned. He was like an ordinary guy. He was pale and thin. So it did surprise me that he would consider himself suitable for "Cover Guy."

Obviously, he was trading on his looks. He told us that he`d been compared to Ryan Phillippe. He told us that he could bulk up. He obviously was looking for his opportunity in the limelight. We were looking for guys that had the look, had the body, had what it takes.

Yes, he had an -- you know, an attractive look, but he certainly didn`t have the body, didn`t have what it -- would be necessary to be -- to be a model, an underwear model. And that`s what our judges decided and why they did not send him forward into the semifinals.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, we are learning now that the victim`s family, Lin Jun`s family has arrived from China in Canada to recover the body, even though this victim`s head has not been recovered. This is believed to be by police a former lover of Magnotta`s who, again, was decapitated, dismembered, and horrific crimes perpetrated on this individual.

Now, this is what shocks me, but maybe I shouldn`t be shocked, Pat Brown, criminal profiler.

Magnotta`s lawyer says that Magnotta is in fear for his life in a Berlin jail, because the media is making him out to be a, quote, "really, really bad person."

Pat, if half the things, if a quarter of the things that have been said about this man are true -- torturing kittens, committing this horrific murder, allegedly -- you`re dealing with a sociopath, a psychopath. But what that tells me is that his vision of himself is so out of touch with reality he`s living in a parallel universe of his own that exists in his mind.

PAT BROWN, CRIMINAL PROFILER: Along with his lawyer. I mean, if you can`t call this man a really, really bad man, who can you call a bad man?

But he is. You know, what you`re saying. He`s very narcissistic. He`s got very grandiose thinking, but he`s not that different from other serial killer types.
I mean, what I saw in that video was horrifying, but that`s what serial killers do. What was different about him is that he`s an attention whore first, before he was a serial killer, which is what he would have been if he`d kept going. Or maybe he has killed others. We don`t know about it.

He`s such an attention whore. He just wants everybody to see him, see him, see him. And he`s always been in front of the camera, so he just married the two things together.

So he`s just a psychopath to the nth degree who`s found a medium to work with, which is the Internet.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, when I`m looking at him, what strikes me, Joe Warmington -- and you`re a reporter with Sun News Network out of Toronto who also interviewed this man -- is how deceptive his appearance is. He seems so -- almost petite, very boyish, very unthreatening physically. Did that throw you off, too, Joe?

JOE WARMINGTON, REPORTER, SUN NEWS NETWORK: Yes, it did, and you know, he had this almost a chameleon-type thing, because he was trying to look like Paul Bernardo here with the Ken and Barbie thing.

And then, you know, obviously, he was known and was convicted of trying to look like a woman and had the credit cards and the profilers like Pat that said that, you know, he would travel as a woman. So he could be anything at any time.

Interesting how he dealt with that in Larry`s video, when he said, "I can put on weight if you need to. I can do what I have to," and he can surpass his goals. I think that was really, really telling.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MAGNOTTA: Practice makes perfect, right?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: ... hair color?

MAGNOTTA: No. Actually, I just got it highlighted and changed things up a bit.

I have no problem gaining weight. I can gain weight if I need to gain weight.

I can gain muscle. Everybody can do it. You know, I can gain muscle. I can work out. I`m very determined. In every goal that I put my mind to, I surpass.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Every goal he`s ever had he`s surpassed. This is video we have just obtained showing the alleged Butcher of Montreal, accused of the most horrific crime imaginable, five years before that man was killed. Do we see anything that foreshadowed what was allegedly to come? Could this murder and dismemberment have been a drastic attempt for Magnotta to get his own TV show? He failed at this audition.

You remember this other story. It didn`t involve murder, but the entire world watched when they thought a little boy was trapped inside this balloon, only to find out that it was a ploy by his dad, who wanted to get his own reality show.

Back to Larry Peloso, primetime exclusive, director of "Cover Guy." You auditioned this now alleged killer of the worst order. Did you get a sense that he would do anything to get this? In other words, did he seem desperate to you?

PELOSO: He certainly gave me the impression that yes, he could do what it takes, and he wanted to be the next "Cover Guy." The judges asked him, well, to be an underwear model, you`ve got to have the right body, and you don`t have it.

And he said, "Well, I can bulk up," as you just watched there. Again, he was determined.

But what was lurking behind those eyes, I don`t know. To be five years later, an international murderer is beyond anything I could ever imagine from seeing that guy before us five years ago.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: And perhaps the lesson is that it`s not like in the movies, that if somebody is a horrific killer -- and he is just accused; he hasn`t gone to trial yet -- there`s no way to tell.

But there was foreshadowing. We still don`t know if there are other victims out there, but this guy has a lot in common with Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, and Andrew Cunanan, say cops.

You know, Dahmer was a cannibal. Ted Bundy was a necrophiliac. And all three serial killers had a long history of killing animals, as did Magnotta.

Magnotta allegedly tortured kittens and put many of these videos on the Internet. He reportedly e-mailed one of those videos to "The Sun" and the BBC and allegedly warned, "Once you kill and taste blood, it`s impossible to stop," and then predicted, "I will be back. And this time the victims won`t be animals."

Chris DeRose, president of Last Chance for Animals, an organization that has hunted this guy for years, cops refused to move in, despite your pleas, and take the animal cruelty cases seriously. Do you think that this is a mistake that cost a man his life?

CHRIS DEROSE, LAST CHANCE FOR ANIMALS: Very good chance, Jane. If this guy -- if people had taken us seriously, and this was brought to me by the Barbi twins to look at videotape of the footage of the kittens that were being suffocated to death. If this was taken seriously, and I told them yes, it`s real. And they went back to law enforcement and told them, "This is real. Do something about it."

This is typical attitude. I`d always hear, "Boys will be boys. Oh, it`s just a cat. It`s just a dog." Well, it`s no longer that. This case is really bringing it to the forefront that there is a relationship between the torture and killing of animals and the torturing and killing of human beings. And I think that people really need to get a hold of this.

Another thing I`d like to say, Jane. In most states in this country, it`s a misdemeanor, it`s barely a slap on the wrist, to torture and kill an animal. And if you move from one state to the other, that record doesn`t follow you.

So it needs to become a felony in every state in this country so that you move from California to Omaha, Nebraska, it`s going to follow you. It doesn`t -- it doesn`t just stay there. We need to have some type of tracking system to see where these kind of people are going.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MAGNOTTA: I have a very deep voice. A lot of people tell me that, actually.

How do I get my voice so deep? Practice makes perfect. Right?

(END VIDEO CLIP)
VELEZ-MITCHELL: That is video we`ve obtained of the alleged Butcher of Montreal, five years because -- before he was accused of a horrific crime.

Now, some are saying that the Web site owner that hosted the alleged Luka Magnotta murder video, entitled "One Lunatic, One Ice Pick," should be charged with a crime for posting that video. This is a cautionary tale about the dark side of social media.

Magnotta manipulated the Internet in his way, perversely questing for fame. He created more than 70 Facebook pages. He created different identities. He viciously, allegedly tortured cats to death, uploaded it on the Internet.

And Jayne Weintraub, criminal defense attorney, should the Web site that posted the -- you might call it even a snuff video, where he allegedly decapitates and does all sorts of horrible things to this victim, in a video that one of my producers watched and he ran away after ten seconds because he was nauseous, should that Web site owner be charged with a crime?

JAYNE WEINTRAUB, CRIMINAL DEFENSE ATTORNEY: Well, I don`t know if he should be charged with a crime, because I don`t know if there`s a statute on the books that would prohibit that kind of posting.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, do you think there should be a statute on the books?

WEINTRAUB: Absolutely. Absolutely I do, because I wouldn`t want one of my kids looking at that by accident, even. That`s -- you know, there`s just no redeeming social value for anything like that to be posted.

And you know, Jane, when we talk about these people that are insane, I mean, there`s no template for somebody who is insane, because the whole feed is on the horror and on the surprise factor. That`s why you can`t predict these people`s behavior. It`s really beyond.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, that`s the thing. Larry Peloso, back to you, our primetime exclusive. You spent time with this guy. You were the director. There was no hit, as far as I can tell from you, right?

PELOSO: Yes. And he wanted his attention and guess what? He`s getting it now, more than he ever dreamed of. But not for the right reasons, unfortunately. And just 10 minutes ago, I saw there`s an audition parody, a parody of his audition already up on YouTube. It`s just crazy.

JANE VELEZ-MITCHELL
Pop Culture Connection with Butcher of Montreal?
Aired June 8, 2012 - 19:00   ET
THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

JANE VELEZ-MITCHELL, HOST: Here`s what we`re talking about tonight. It`s a story that`s got everyone completely engrossed, and now there`s a fascinating Hollywood connection.

This is Luka Magnotta, who is desperate to become famous. Now he`s infamous, accused of unspeakable crimes, including murder. Tonight, new clues show he may have been influenced by some of our favorite Hollywood movies of all time. We`ll be delving into the pop culture connection next.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

VELEZ-MITCHELL (voice-over): Tonight, dark secrets just keep on spilling. Could the alleged decapitation killer, Luka Magnotta, be connected to the unsolved case of body parts found scattered near the Hollywood sign? Canadian cops say they`ve been contacted by the LAPD. Are there more victims out there?

Plus more toxic secrets about this alleged Butcher of Montreal surface. His ex-girlfriend speaks out. Can she provide a possible motive, and was he suffering big money problems?
 ::snipping2::
And he was totally buff but then packed on 70 pounds. Then he got totally buff again. How did he do that? And what was the point he was trying to prove. He`ll talk to us tonight.

LUKA MAGNOTTA, ALLEGED KILLER: Hi. My name is Luka. Magnotta is my last name.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Killing and dismembering a man in Canada.

MAGNOTTA: Practice makes perfect, right?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The first package containing appeared to be a human hand.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is a really traumatic or difficult situation for absolutely everybody.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Human remains were discovered in separate packages mailed to two local area schools this afternoon.

VELEZ-MITCHELL (voice-over): The victim`s head is still missing.

NINA ARSENAULT, EX-GIRLFRIEND OF MAGNOTTA: Well, he said he would do anything to be famous. I didn`t think that he meant killing someone.

LARRY PELOSO, DIRECTOR, "COVER GUY": I had this chill that just ran right up my spine when I realized he`d auditioned for us.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It`s a real human being getting decapitated in front of the video, in front of the camera.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I believe that he was showing off his work.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Adding to the theory that Magnotta is a self-obsessed and fame-crazed individual.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I knew he was really strange, and he creeped me out for sure.

MAGNOTTA: A lot of people tell me I`m really devastatingly good looking, so...

(END VIDEOTAPE)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Good evening. Jane-Velez-Mitchell.

Stunning new information tonight in the case of the so-called Butcher of Montreal. Did Hollywood inspire Luka Magnotta`s sadism? And could an unsolved murder in Hollywood be connected?

Porn star pretty boy Luka Magnotta now in custody. Cops say he set up a video camera and deliberately videotaped himself murdering his ex-lover and then posting it online. Magnotta allegedly murdered this man, 33-year- old Jun Lin.

Now, Magnotta`s ex- says the unmentionable acts of a sexual nature caught on tape during the murder were all a desperate ploy for attention.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

ARSENAULT: I think he took a lot of drugs and disassociated himself from the experience so he could decapitate someone so he could mutilate their body and then so he could actually simulate having sex with him, but I don`t actually think that it`s -- I don`t think it`s a real sex act. I think he`s a copycat psychopath.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: A copycat psychopath. That`s how the ex- phrased it.

Certainly, Magnotta had stars in his eyes. He would seemingly do anything for attention, including by his own admission, prostitution and porn. He seems to believe he had fans. Watch this from YouTube.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MAGNOTTA: What`s up? And hi to all my fans.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Madonna`s song playing in the background there, "La Isla Bonita."

Another possibility, Magnotta motivated to murder by movies about serial killers? New clues connect his alleged snuff film with details from some very famous movies: "Basic Instinct" and "American Psycho." Those details in a moment.

And could this suspect be connected to an unsolved Hollywood murder?

Straight out to Joe Warmington, reporter for the Sun News Network out of Toronto.

You spent time with Luka Magnotta. You interviewed him long before this crime spree. What do you make of the comments -- these new comments now from his ex-, who says, "Well, he was acting"? When you act, you don`t actually kill. Cops say this guy killed.

JOE WARMINGTON, REPORTER, SUN NEWS NETWORK: Well, I mean, it`s a ridiculous statement in the fact that the head is still missing, and the limbs are all over the place. And people are all across this country and now the United States and also, obviously, in Europe are following the story.

But nothing would surprise me with this.

What I want to know is who is working with him, and who`s shielded him and who`s paid some of the bills and these kinds of things. And I know where I`d start, right off the bat.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes. So that`s interesting, because the sense that I`ve gotten the whole time was that he was acting alone. But now we`re hearing he had tremendous money problems.

Jon Lieberman, HLN contributor, investigator, if you have tremendous money problems, to the point where he almost went into bankruptcy or did because he couldn`t pay tolls and things like that, how do you get from New York to Hollywood and then off to Europe, to France, to Berlin? That costs a lot of money.

JON LIEBERMAN, HLN CONTRIBUTOR: Well, and that`s why police believe he was prostituting. He was selling himself for sex. He was getting cash for escort -- escorting services and things like that, because you hit the nail on the head.

But the horrifying thing here is now we believe that he has spent time in New York City. He spent time in Miami. He spent time in L.A., London, Berlin. This is a worldwide investigation.

Now, and to your point, police believe he may have multiple accomplices. One thing they`re looking at is surveillance video from that post office up in Canada where he allegedly mailed these body parts from. They want to see on the surveillance video who actually sent these packages. Was it Luka or was it somebody else?

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Oh, my gosh. The idea that somebody else may have assisted him in allegedly sending these parts, that is extraordinarily disturbing, extraordinarily disturbing.

And there are so many unanswered questions. Luka Magnotta looks handsome and fit in this audition tape, but apparently, he wasn`t always that way. Take a look at this. And listen.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MAGNOTTA: I used to be really overweight, and I lost the weight.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: How did you do that?

MAGNOTTA: I just got up every morning at, like, 4 a.m. and like ran constantly. And people would tell me stop running, stop running, and I just kept doing it, basically.

(END VIDEO CLIP)
VELEZ-MITCHELL: He`s obviously good at running. Remember, he ran to Europe where he was apprehended in an Internet cafe. Magnotta accused of sending his victims` body parts to a schools in Vancouver and to politicians in Ottawa. But the victim`s head is still missing.

Mike Brooks, HLN law-enforcement analyst, could this be the big finale, that this head is going to show up in the mail, especially if Jon Lieberman suggested, if he has accomplices who might still be out there helping him?

MIKE BROOKS, HLN LAW ENFORCEMENT ANALYST: There`s a very good possibility. And did he have any kind of storage facility that he could have kept this body and more bodies in, possibly?

And the connection to Los Angeles, I think that is going to be -- definitely be looked at as well as the other cities where he`s been. His computer, what -- who is he communicating with? Who is he talking to? These are all big, big pieces of evidence that they could glean, possibly, from the phones that the Canadian authorities and the United States authorities. And if I`ve got any open cases anywhere similar to this, Jane, I`m going to be taking a look at this guy.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: A terrifying connection has surfaced between the murder video Luka allegedly posted online and the Christian Bale movie "American Psycho." Watch this from the film`s trailer on YouTube.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CHRISTIAN BALE, ACTOR: Sabrina, why don`t you dance a little? Kristin, get down on your knees. We`re not through yet.

REESE WITHERSPOON, ACTRESS: You`re inhuman.

BALE: I know my behavior can be erratic sometimes.

Hey, Paul. (SCREAMING)

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Oh, God, I despise violent movies like that. I refuse to go see them.

Now, in that movie, Christian Bale plays a secret killer who also videotapes his victims. But here`s the eerie part. The music in Luka Magnotta`s video where he`s killing somebody, allegedly, is the very same song used at the beginning of "American Psycho," the song "True Faith" by New Order.

So I want to ask Jeff Brown. You`re a former prosecutor. You`ve covered many, many sick crimes. Could this be a clue that he was influenced by this graphic movie?

JEFF BROWN, FORMER PROSECUTOR: Yes, you know, oftentimes you`ll find the clients in cases like this will try to copycat what they`ve either read, what they`ve seen, other movies like that. So clearly, I mean, that is something that the prosecutor are going to be looking at, the investigators are going to be looking at.

And hopefully -- hopefully, for their sake, they`re going to be able to interview him, because nothing is more powerful than a confession. And they still have to prove that`s him on that video and that that body was actually alive at the time he began these gruesome acts.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CALLER: This is Valerie in California, and what I really would like to know is where are their families? What are their families thinking about them? I would love to know that.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

ARSENAULT: Yes, well, he said he would do anything to be famous. I didn`t think that he meant killing someone. I thought he meant doing -- being a porn star.

I don`t believe the sex acts. I don`t find them convincing. I think, even though someone was killed, I think he was performing the sociopath. I think he`s performing the role of a psychopath, because he wanted to be legendary.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: With all due respect, that ex-girlfriend of the suspect, Luka Magnotta, I think that person is a little deluded, because when you`re acting, you don`t actually kill.

Police say that Luka Magnotta set up a video camera and videotaped an actual murder. So that person, I think, is very, very confused, maybe some kind of psychological enabler, rationalizer, co-dependent, I don`t know.

She`s invited on our show any time. I`d love to talk to her.

Another movie that may have influenced Luka Magnotta was the 1992 hit "Basic Instinct." Watch it from YouTube, and you`ll know exactly what I`m talking about.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We`ve got 31 stab wounds.

MICHAEL DOUGLAS, ACTOR: What was it?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Ice pick.

(WHISTLES)

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes, Sharon Stone in that movie kills with an ice pick. And, of course, Magnotta`s alleged snuff film is entitled "1 Lunatic, 1 Ice Pick." And the movie begins with a victim who is tied up in bed, just like the victim, Jun Le [SIC], in real life was tied up in bed, allegedly, his face, according to cops, covered with a mask before he was viciously attacked and murdered.

Now, I have to go back to Joe Warmington, the reporter for the Sun News Network. You have spent time with Luka Magnotta. Do you think indeed that Hollywood essentially taught him to kill? That he took a page from Hollywood and figured, in his sick mind, "Well, if it`s OK for it to be happening on film, I can do it, too"?

WARMINGTON: Well, Jane, I do think that whatever`s happened here is - - definitely has Hollywood`s stamp all over it. Everything, all of which you`ve mentioned here.

Even when he was in Berlin, when he got on the bus, he used a name out of "Basic Instinct" to get a bus ticket.

The game called -- the video game called "Ripper," starring Christopher Walken, a video game, Walken`s character`s name was Magnotta. You know, the songs were all from 1987.

So the theme is there. The picture of him with the Hollywood sign in behind from 2007, you know, it`s just too much there to not have a thorough, as your other guest mentioned, Jane, a thorough worldwide, everyone get together and figure out just where this guy has been.

And he hasn`t always been there as himself. You know he has all kinds of identities and passports, et cetera, so this is going to get a very strong look and fast.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: You are so right when you say that this character in the movie is named Magnotta. I spoke to animal rights activists who have been hunting this guy for years, because he allegedly tortured kittens and killed them and put those videos online. And they don`t believe that Luka Magnotta`s his real name at all.

Let`s go to the phone lines. Michelle, Alabama. Your question or thought, Michelle?

CALLER: Hi, Jane. Thank you for having me.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Sure.

CALLER: I have a couple of points to make. One of the points is that there`s not much mention of the dog in the video that was forced to partake in cannibalism. I know that`s horrible. And I was wondering where is the dog?

And perhaps maybe the head isn`t, like, anywhere to be found because perhaps the dog ate it. I mean, I know this sounds horrible...

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, Michelle, you`re actually raising some good points.

Jon Lieberman, investigative reporter. This sicko allegedly brings in a dog -- and I don`t want to get too graphic here -- but after this victim was murdered to partake of the flesh, and people have been asking, what happened to the dog? Because this man is known for torturing animals, allegedly. Could he have then tortured the dog and killed the dog, as well?

LIEBERMAN: Absolutely. I mean, that`s something else that law enforcement is looking into. A few nights ago right here, I spoke about watching that video and seeing the dog go in the room and...

VELEZ-MITCHELL: But we don`t want to get too graphic.

LIEBERMAN: I`m not going to get into the details of it, but it is certainly something that is important to investigators as well as they continue looking for clues.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: And this is all in Canada where the killing allegedly occurred, so it`s not even American investigators.

Now, there`s a potential Hollywood connection. On this unedited audition tape, Magnotta acts like a star waiting to be discovered by Hollywood. Watch this.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MAGNOTTA: I have a very deep voice. A lot of people tell me that, actually.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: How did you get your voice so deep?

MAGNOTTA: How do I get my voice so deep? Practice makes perfect, right?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Now, did Magnotta go to Hollywood? The answer is yes. The question is was he there last year when a severed head and other limbs were found scattered near the Hollywood sign?

The Sun newspaper reports back in January, when the head was discovered, Magnotta was living in Los Angeles and working as a prostitute there. Today, the Los Angeles Police Department told us, quote, "Our investigators are in contact with Canadian investigators are trying to determine Magnotta`s whereabouts during the time of the Hollywood Hills murders."

Ten seconds, Mike Brooks, could there be a connection?

BROOKS: Never say never when it comes to sickos like this, Jane. Absolutely. And that`s why they`re looking into it. Otherwise they would have totally discarded it.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is far from being over. The investigation has brought us to the suspect and the questions beside that. Are there another possible homicide or other crime linked to that person? That will be investigated, for sure.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Luka Magnotta was struggling to be famous. He was also financially desperate. Watch this unedited audition. He`s practically begging to be cast in this reality show.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MAGNOTTA: Practice makes perfect, right?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You have your hair colored.

MAGNOTTA: No, actually, I just got it highlighted and changed things up a bit. I have no problem gaining weight. I can gain weight if I need to gain weight. I can gain muscle. Anybody can gain muscle. I`m very determined and every goal that I put my mind to I surpass.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: But he didn`t get that part and he was so desperate because he needed money. In 2007 he declared bankruptcy. Take a look at his expenses. Luka owed $500 in a gym membership, $1,400 in cell phone bills.

But Mike Brooks, HLN law enforcement analyst, he also owed $2,500 in back rent and almost 7 grand in car payments, $800 in parking tickets, and $200 in unpaid highway tolls. And I`ve got to tell you, Mike, when you can`t play a toll you are really flat broke.

BROOKS: Exactly. And that`s going to be one of the other things they`re going to be looking at, obviously, are his bank statements. Where is he getting the money to travel to all these different places? Where is he getting money to, you know, subsist on? These are things they`re going to be looking into, because when you ask someone who`s engaged or allegedly engaged in prostitution and things like that, a lot of times they may have someone who`s giving them money on a regular basis, Jane.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Jon Lieberman, we were talking about this unsolved murder near the Hollywood sign. How can American cops work with the international authorities to try to solve that case?

LIEBERMAN: American cops want to get his DNA in their hands and it appears that investigators overseas got his DNA from inside of a hotel room in Paris where he stayed while he was a fugitive. If U.S. investigators can get a hold of that DNA, they`ll run it through CODIS, through the DNA database here, and see if anything pops up. And they`ll use it to help them in that L.A. case to match with whatever foreign DNA they have on those body parts that they found out in L.A.

‘Canadian psycho’ may have lived in Miami

Miami police will investigate whether accused murderer Luka Rocco Magnotta played a role in a grisly 2009 case that remains unsolved.

By Rene Rodriguez
rrodriguez@MiamiHerald.com

Miami police said Saturday it’s possible that a Canadian man arrested in Berlin on a murder charge last week also was responsible for an unsolved 2009 murder in Miami.

Possible. But not likely.

Both homicides involved dismemberment.

In the Canadian case, former porn star Luka Rocco Magnotta is accused of stabbing 33-year-old Montreal college student Jun Lin to death with an ice pick, then mailing severed body parts — including a hand and a foot — to various government offices.

In the Miami case, police still have no leads on the murder of 21 year-old Omar Laparra, whose dismembered body was found floating in plastic bags in Biscayne Bay in 2009.

Although the Magnotta case has dominated the Canadian news media for the last two weeks, Miami didn’t come into the story until a journalist asked local police about a possible connection.

"Why not look into it? Any agency with a similar case, we would look into it,” said Miami Sgt. Confesor Gonzalez, the lead investigator in the Laparra case. “However, the preliminary look shows the M.O. is different. In the Canadian case, it appeared to be domestic and the killer knew the victim while in our case, it appears to be random. Nonetheless, in the interest of being thorough, we will follow up with Montreal police."
