FILLMORE — Some drove cross-country while others made the half-hour drive from Shreveport.

All trudged Friday through the woods in sleet and snow looking for signs of Clinton Devon Nelson, who hasn't been heard from since Sept. 1, 2006.

Three national missing person organizations, Texas EquuSearch, Let's Bring Them Home and the Kristen Foundation were involved in the first of the three-day effort. More than two dozen family members, friends and volunteers searched through yards, pastures and along creek beds and pond shores near the intersection of U.S. Highway 80 and state Highway 157.

Nelson, 21, of the 200 block of Homer Road in Haughton, left a house on nearby Ward Lane, part of the area seekers combed. They poked into holes in the ground with sticks. They chopped through honeysuckle vines with machetes.

"We look for anything, like bones or clothing," said Carolyn Johnson, Nelson's mother, as she sifted through two autumns worth of leaves. She says she hopes for the best, but she accepts that he may be dead.

She simply wants answers.

Her son left behind a $2,000 paycheck. He was on foot, and investigators say he had only a few dollars cash and no credit cards.

Cold, wet weather wasn't the hardest part Friday, Wes Walton said. The 27-year-old made a 21-hour drive from Spearfish, S.D., where Nelson used to live. Walton describes him as his "best friend" and someone with whom he could discuss any problem.

"Every time I saw a Styrofoam cup, I about dropped," he said, suggesting polystyrene reminded him of bones. "You never think it's going to be you, that it's your friend that's going to disappear. It's emotional."

Volunteers found a shirt and some underwear, "but nothing significant," said LaDonna Meredith, director of Let's Bring Them Home. They also found what appear to be animal bones. Hunters use the area.

Searchers mark their finds with orange tape for experts from Texas EquuSearch to examine. They then pass along any important information to Bossier sheriff's investigators.

Cindy Wisdom, of Texas EquuSearch, said previous searches were not as thorough. The groups have set up a base at station 3 of Bossier Fire District No. 1 on state Highway 157. Members look at maps and plan their grid-by-grid search starting at 5 miles out from the house where Nelson last was seen.

"You may only find a vertebrae or toe bone," Wisdom said.

Jeff Mason, Nelson's father who lives southeast of Haughton, expects more people will help today and Sunday.

"Today it's just getting started. It being a Friday, everybody had to work," the 42-year-old Davison truck driver said. "If anybody knows me and my family, I encourage them to come out here and help us look."

Bossier sheriff's deputies have made no arrests and don't know of anyone who would have wanted to hurt Nelson. Family members say he had moved to Haughton to live with his father about six months before he went missing. They also said he had served time in South Dakota State Penitentiary and had been commuting to Tyler, Texas, to work on an oil rig.

Hey everyone.  Just a quick note.  We have finished the second day of the search.  We did not find anything today.  We did have a few more searchers today maybe 35-40 people.  It is not what we hoped but if we are meant to find Clinton this will be enough.  Please keep praying.  I so want answers.

Thanks
Carolyn

I was so hoping to see that a trace of Clinton would be found.  I hope that Carolyn gets some closure soon and is able to find out what happened.  I have that in my prayers.

Prayers for Clinton, in the hopes he can come home soon.  Prayers for Carolyn, hoping she will have the answers she needs.  I lit another candle today for Clinton, hoping it will  help light his way back home to his Mom.  I know she loves him and misses him so.  God bless you Clinton, wherever you are...

Thank you... I just had a very hard time in dragging this news release over

Search for missing man unsuccessful
http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080121/NEWS01/801210321

There is a reason our LORD did not provied any answers on Clinton at this time, and that the reason is beyond my selfish, earthly understanding.

May our LORD give Carolyn & Clinton's famliy the strength to continue to seek resolution and for others to assist anyway they can.
