Police say 41-year-old Stacey Smalls was charged Friday with two counts of first-degree murder.
Investigators believe one twin was strangled and the other was drowned. Authorities are awaiting autopsy results for the official causes of death.

Police also say they believe Smalls gave her 4-year-old daughter some type of substance to drink in an attempt to take her life. The girl is listed in stable but guarded condition at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.

Cops: Girl poisoned by her killer mom is stable

A 4-YEAR-OLD GIRL whom police said was poisoned by her suicidal mother who killed two of her other children was listed in stable condition at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children Friday afternoon, police said.

Meanwhile, Stacey Smalls, the girl's 41-year-old mother, was awaiting arraignment on two counts of murder after she allegedly suffocated one of her 18-month-old twins and drowned the other Thursday in her home on Ditman Street near Levick in Tacony.

Police Friday night were unsure of what Smalls used in the attempt to poison her daughter.

PHILADELPHIA—A Philadelphia woman was being held without bail Tuesday in the deaths of her 18-month-old twins and what authorities believe was the attempted poisoning of a third child.

Stacey Smalls, 41, faces two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of the twins, named Adam and Eve, last week. She is also accused of the attempted murder of her 4-year-old daughter, whom authorities allege was given some sort of substance to drink in an attempt to poison her.

Smalls was arraigned over the weekend on murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault and other charges, a spokeswoman for District Attorney Seth Williams said in a statement Tuesday. It was not immediately clear whether she had an attorney, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for June 13.

Stacey Smalls, 41, attempted to commit suicide by slitting her own wrists after she allegedly killed her 1-1/2-year-old son Adam and the boy's twin sister Eve -- drowning one and strangling the other, Philadelphia Police said.

Police sources say Stacey Smalls left four notes explaining that she hurt the children because she was apparently upset about an affair her husband was allegedly having.

"She had something that she felt was justification but there is no justification... it's a tragedy two young babies dead and there is no excuse for that," Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said.

Stacey Smalls was taken to Frankford Hospital while the 4-year-old girl was in stable condition at St. Christopher's Hospital, police said.
