That other mugshot must be from a prior arrest?

Brittney Wood's mother arrested, accused of sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl
(updated, video)

MOBILE, Alabama -- Chessie Wood, the 38-year-old mother of missing woman Brittney Wood, has been arrested after deputies say she sexually abused a 10-year-old girl in 2009.

Det. Terri Hall of the Mobile County Sheriff's Office said the department has been investigating Chessie Wood since a now-14-year-old came forward with the allegations in January 2013.

Hall could not discuss specifics about the alleged abuse, emphasizing that Chessie Wood has been charged with two counts of sodomy and one count of sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12.

The abuse is believed to have happened only one time, according to investigators.

Hall said the victim came forward while getting help in Mobile and Baldwin counties. The alleged abuse took place in Baldwin County.

Chessie Wood, 38, was booked into Mobile County Metro Jail around 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, 2013. (Mobile County Sheriff's Office photo)

"Our victim is extremely, extremely matter-of-fact," Hall said. "She's just very courageous in this whole thing, and I know she's telling the truth."

Crying, Chessie Wood proclaimed her innocence as Hall escorted her from an MCSO van to Mobile County Metro Jail around 6:45 p.m.

"I believe that they're just going to arrest everyone in this family, whether they did anything or not," Chessie Wood said, later adding that Derek Wood, her son, is among those who are not guilty of sex abuse.

"I need to find my daughter, and I can't do it in here," she said. "Please look for my daughter. Don't let this deter anything.

"If she was here, she could clear all this up for me. She would come and tell the truth about everything. Everyone knows my daughter was one of the biggest victims."

"I don't even know who the victim's supposed to be," Chessie Wood said. "These kids are so messed up from what the real perpetrators [have] done to them, I don't blame the child. They've been brainwashed for years."

Chessie Wood Released from Jail

MOBILE CO., AL (WPMI) - The mother of a missing teen who was the latest member of her family to be arrested on sex crimes is now out of jail, records show.

According to the Mobile County Jail log, Chessie Wood, whose daughter Brittney Wood went missing in May 2012, was released from the jail just before midnight Friday. Wood, 38, is facing two sodomy charges and sex abuse of a child under the age of 12.

Mobile County Sheriff's detective Terri Hall said the female accuser in the case was 10 years old at the time of the alleged incident. She is now 14.

A magistrate granted Wood a $65,000 bond earlier Friday.

"It's something. Every month someone gets accused. Every month. I know for a fact my wife didn't do nothing like this. I've been with her 12 years," Wood's husband Paul Housekenecht said after Friday's bond hearing. "The one that's accusing she's hardly seen her since I've been with her. They come to my house stay five, 10 minutes then leave."

Local 15's Derrick Rose spoke to Chessie Wood as a detective led her out of the sheriff's office. She said she believes law enforcement has something against her family. CLICK HERE for the full interview.

Allegations in Wood Family Sex Abuse Cases Interconnected, Says Investigator

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) Chessie Wood, the mother of missing teen mom Brittney Wood, faced a Mobile District Judge Monday to plead not guilty to three very disturbing charges. She's charged with two counts of sodomy and one count of sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old.

"She's not guilty," said defense attorney Michael McDuffie. "She's going to have a preliminary hearing, she's going to be proven she's not guilty."

Chessie Wood joins a long list of family members arrested on similar sex charges in both Mobile and Baldwin Counties. The accusations have left residents on both sides of the bay wondering what's going on.

"Each case is individual," said Corporal Terri Hall, with the Mobile County Sheriff's Office. "We treat it individually even though it may tie in. But they all have a point where the come together."

Hall investigates alleged child abuse cases, including this one involving Chessie Wood.
She says one child has come forward already, and it's very possible there could be at least one more.

And don't be surprised, she says, if there are more arrests.

Looming over this latest arrest and accusation is the fact that Chessie Wood's daughter, Brittney, went missing around the time that her uncle, Chessie Wood's brother-in-law, committed suicide.

Could they have shed some light on this troubling case?

Hall will only say this: "I would like to be able to talk to the person that I believe this all started with, would probably be the greatest gift. Not the victim. And, unfortunately we can't talk to that person."

Meanwhile, Wood is free on bond and back home with her two other children.

Her preliminary hearing is set for August 6, when a judge will hear more details about the case. The judge could then decide to send the case to a grand jury.

Missing mom's child protected from case

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Brittney Wood's 3-year-old daughter, Payton Hamilton, is doing well despite the controversy surrounding her family, according to Hamilton's great-grandparents.

"We try to train her the right way, to do things with her and take her places; and we don't really talk about the situation in front of her,” said Maxine Harris.

Harris said her grandson, Andrew Hamilton, is Payton's father and has full custody of the child. She helps raise Payton and told us in 2012 she does her best to protect the child from the details surrounding wood's missing person's case. Brittney has been missing since May 2012.

"Will this ever end? Will they ever find her body?”  Harris said.

Harris said Payton does not recognize a lot of family on the Wood side, but she does know her mother.

"When she does see her on TV, she will say, ‘That's my mama.’ And I’ll say, ‘Well, where is mama?’ She'll say, ‘In the TV.’ I just tell her, ‘That's okay. We’ll be your mama. Papa is here,’” Harris said.

Payton’s great-grandparents are preparing to one day answer some tough questions.

"For youngin’s sake, I wish something would come to a head on it because the youngin’s going to ask questions sooner or later. She's going to want to know; somehow we need to try to answer it,” said Payton’s great-grandfather Dennis Harris

Chessie Wood's preliminary hearing rescheduled

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Chessie Wood was scheduled for a preliminary hearing Tuesday, August 6 in Mobile.

The hearing was postponed until August 14 because a court reporter was not present and the defense agreed to pay for one.

Wood, the mother of missing teenager Brittney Wood, is charged with two counts of first degree sodomy and one count of sexual abuse of a child younger than 12.

She has pleaded not guilty to all charges and has been free on bail.

NEXT COURT HEARING

During the hearing, prosecutors will present evidence related to the charges against Wood, and Judge York will determine whether to send the case to a grand jury.

Chessie Wood in court for preliminary hearing

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Chessie Wood appeared in court for a preliminary hearing Wednesday, August 14.

Wood is charged with two counts of first degree sodomy and one count of sexual abuse of a child younger than 12.

Judge Jay York sent her case to a grand jury.

Assistant District Attorney Nicki Patterson is calling it one of the worst sex abuse cases she's ever prosecuted.

"This is a family of three generations of abused children. Pretty much everyone in this extended family was having sex with one another and having sex with children,” said Patterson.

A detective told the court details surrounding Wood's sex abuse charges.

Investigators said the alleged victim, a child, claims she was taken to wood's home, asked to undress and perform sex acts.

Authorities said the child claims she was forced to have sex with a relative--in front of Wood.

Patterson said the alleged victim was between ages of 8-10 at the time.

Wood is free on bail and has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Child Sex Abuse Case Sent to Grand Jury
Updated: Wednesday, August 14 2013, 10:57 PM CDT

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) Soon a grand jury will decide the fate of a missing teenager's mother, who's facing charges of sodomy and child sex abuse.

Prosecutors released disturbing details during Chessie Wood's preliminary hearing Wednesday. The details surrounded alleged abuse against a relative prosecutors said was between 8 and 10 years old at the time.

Chessie is the mother of Brittney Wood, the teen mom last seen May 30 of last year.

The judge also issued a no contact order. Chessie Wood is out on bail so Judge Jay York ordered that she have no contact with the alleged victim in this case, whether it be face to face, indirect or through social media.

Prosecutors said Wood comes from a family with three generations of child abuse.

In the courtroom as Chessie Wood took the stand, Cpl. Terri Hall testified that Wood and Wood's brother-in-law, the late Donald Holland, sexually abused holland's daughter when the child was between 8 and 10 years old.

"This is one of a series of some of the worst cases I've ever come across," said Assistant District Attorney, Nicki Patterson.

Prosecutors said Wood performed oral sex on her niece before forcing the child to do the same to her. Then the child was forced to have sex with her father, prosecutors said the alleged victim revealed in an interview.

"Pretty much everyone in this extended family was having sex with one another and having sex with the children," said Patterson.

Brownlee re-arrested

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) - One of at least seven defendants in an elaborate child sex abuse investigation is back behind bars on criminal mischief and burglary charges.

According to Mobile County jail records, 49-year-old William Bonney Brownlee was booked on Friday, October 4 by the Bayou La Batre Police Department.

Brownlee is accused in a child sex ring investigation in Baldwin County involving family and friends of missing mother Brittney Wood.

Special Report: Missing Brittney

He was out on bond at the time of his arrest for sodomy and sex abuse.

Investigators told FOX10 Brownlee is not related to the Woods but has been a friend of the family for many years.

Along with most of the other suspects in Baldwin County, Brownlee’s trial is set for December.

FOX10 is working to gather more details about his most recent arrest and how it violates the conditions of his bond.

He is charged with first-degree criminal mischief and second-degree burglary.

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) - Baldwin County District Attorney Hallie Dixon is opening up about an elaborate sex abuse investigation involving friends and family of missing mother Brittney Wood.

The trials for several of Wood's relatives have been pushed back numerous times, which Dixon said has been really frustrating for her office.

"I have to tell you it's one of the biggest frustrations as a prosecutor that we face all the time. In a case of this nature it is more understanding because of the scope. I mean it is such a massive investigation. It went across county lines, it went into different agencies, jurisdictions," she said.

Special Report: Missing Brittney

Dixon said the sex abuse investigation only continues to grow and evolve.

Relatives believe the cases will help solve Brittney wood's mysterious disappearance.

"Last I heard there were still continuing to come in - leads- and possible other victims and other things that are being followed up with DHR. Possibly other offenders," said Dixon.

Dixon maintains that her office is ready for trial.

"We have been ready and I told that court that," she said.

The new trials are set for December 2013.
