A Closer Look at the Child Advocacy Center
Posted: May 20, 2014 6:49 PM CST Updated: May 20, 2014 6:50 PM CST
By Tiffany McCall

MOBILE, Ala. - At the Child Advocacy Center you'll find a network of therapists, law enforcement officers, social workers, and the only child abuse prosecutor for Mobile County, Nicki Patterson.

"The case load is pretty significant. I have open at any given time about 250 cases," she said.

Patterson is an assistant district attorney and says the majority of the cases involve pornography and the internet.

"I've learned something from almost every case. We are currently involved in the Wood/Holland cases and I think we've all learned a lot in those cases, that just how far and how deep a family that practices incest can take these practices and how many generations can be tainted by that. we've seen that frequently, but this one was just so large, that it's almost overwhelming," she said.

19 year old Brittney wood garnered national attention after she disappeared, her uncle who was last seen with her committed suicide, and 8 relatives and friends were arrested on charges involving rape, sex abuse and sodomy. Mobile police detective Jeff Corley says the investigation is far from over.

"There's so many defendants involved and just to think that parents would do that to their child and take them around to different family members and friends like that, it was definitely the most shocking case that I've ever worked," he said.

Brittney Wood Detectives: wait on forensics results, sources “close to case” talking

Lead investigators working on missing mother Brittney Wood’s case say they are waiting for forensics results on possible evidence found in a vehicle.

Detectives are not revealing who the vehicle belonged to. Only saying they found the vehicle a few months ago, took samples and sent possible evidence to a forensics lab.

Officer Jeff Corley is one of the investigators in Mobile working on the case.

“Ultimately I believe she was murdered. But we are going to have to eventually find her body or have someone come forward as a witness to that,” said Corely.

Corely said people “very close to the case” are cooperating with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office. He won’t reveal who, but says the interviews are producing leads they are following up on.

Now Stephanie Hanke believes her step-daughter is dead.

” I’m starting to believe this was pre-meditated.I want to believe she is somewhere out there alive but with everything going on… even law enforcement doesn’t believe that,” said Hanke.

Reporter: “What is keeping you up at night?”
Hanke: “Not knowing. Still waiting for answers”

Detectives say they sent possible evidence to a foresenics lab a few months ago and it will be another couple of months before they get the results.

Mobile detectives honored for work on Brittney Wood family, Alicia Gray and other child abuse cases

MOBILE, Alabama -- For the first time since the 1980s, two area law enforcement officers working out of the Child Advocacy Center of Mobile were chosen by their respective agencies as Officer and Deputy of the Year. The pair was recognized on Friday by the center's Board of Directors for their work investigating multiple high-profile cases.

"As you can imagine, dealing with child victims is a very emotional process for the detectives that are assigned here -- a very difficult process they have to undertake," said Police Chief James Barber. "It takes a very special skill set."

Detective Jeff Corley was named the Mobile Police Department's 2013 Officer of the Year. He's been with MPD for eight years, the last four of which he spent working out of the Child Advocacy Center.

On average, Corley investigates six to eight allegations of child sexual and physical abuse per month, according to MPD.

"There's no more rewarding job in law enforcement, I think, than putting away a bad guy that’s abused his children," Corley said. "That is the only good part in this, is I feel like we're actually doing something to protect our children from future abuse."

His notable investigations in 2013 included work on the case against the family of missing Mobile mother Brittney Wood. Since June 2012, eight of her family members and three family friends have been arrested and charged with sex abuse.

Cpl. Terri Hall also worked on the case. She was the deputy who escorted Wood's mother, Chessie, from Mobile County Sheriff's Office Headquarters to Mobile County Metro Jail on June 27, 2013. Chessie Wood faces charges of second-degree sexual abuse and production of child pornography after a girl said she had been abused when she was 10 years old.

Hall, who works between 15 and 20 felony crime against children cases per month, was named MCSO's 2013 Deputy of the Year. She's been in area law enforcement for 14 years and has worked from the Child Advocacy Center for the last three and a half years.

"Here at the Child Advocacy Center we have one common interest, one common goal, and that is to help with the healing process for our kids and for our families," Hall said.

Vigil held on 2-year anniversary of Brittney Wood’s disappearance

DAPHNE, Ala. (WALA) – On the 2-year anniversary of the disappearance of young mother Brittney Wood, folks gathered Friday night, May 30, in Daphne, to keep the hope alive for finding her body.

A candlelight vigil was held at the Carmike jubilee movie theatre in Daphne to honor the lives of missing children across the Gulf Coast, including Brittney.

The Klaas Kids Foundation, along with the Disaster & Victim Services, two organizations involved with the search for Brittney Wood, also encouraged folks to light a candle for Brittney’s young daughter Payton, to encourage her, and let her know hope is not lost for finding her mother.

Brittney’s father, Wallace Hanke, told FOX10 his daughter has been missing for much too long, and he wants answers in his daughters case.

“It’s just been way too long, it’s been too long,” he said, “Two years is way too long to not know where your daughter is, where her body is, what happened to her, what exactly happened to her.”

Today, officials told FOX10 they are getting more leads to finding Brittney’s body.

Neither one should have had their bond reduced in my opinion.

Mendy Kent and Wendy Holland

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Twin sisters accused in an alleged child sex ring spanning Mobile and Baldwin counties were in court Tuesday, July 1. It’s a story FOX10 News has been following for over two years.

Wendy Wood Holland and Mendy Wood Kent once again asked a judge to reduce their bonds. They have repeatedly tried to get their bond lowered in the past, but the requests have been turned down.

The sisters were indicted, so a new judge, Judge Rick Stout, is presiding over the case.

Holland is being held on a $30,000 bond on a sodomy charge. Judge Stout lowered her bond to $5,000.

Kent is charged with sodomy and sex abuse. Her bond is set at $60,000. Judge Stout denied her bond reduction.

BAY MINETTE, Alabama — A Mobile man charged in connection with a sex abuse investigation was granted youthful offender status during a Tuesday hearing at the Baldwin County Courthouse.

Derek Wood was given the status as a part of an agreement that was worked out between the defense and the Baldwin County District Attorney's Office.

Wood is the brother of Brittney Wood, who has been missing since 2012. Brittney Wood was 19 years old when she disappeared.

Wood family members have been the target of a sex abuse investigation in Baldwin and Mobile counties.

Derek Wood was indicted on charges of second-degree rape and second-degree sodomy as a part of the investigation. The victim was between the ages of 12 and 16 years old at the time of the abuse.

Derek Wood's youthful offender hearing was held behind closed-doors at the request of Wood's attorney, Christopher Rose.

Derek Wood Granted Youthful Offender Status
Posted: Jul 01, 2014 5:07 PM CST Updated: Jul 01, 2014 5:53 PM CST

In a plea agreement with the district attorney's office, he was granted youthful offender status for second degree rape and sodomy charges. Prosecutor Teresa Heinz says he committed those crimes before he turned 21. "He had requested youthful offender at a previous time which the state objected to and it was denied. An attorney can always file for a reconsideration of that."

In return, Wood is expected to testify against half a dozen or more family and friends in a sex abuse case that spans two counties and has lasted years. The cases may also provide answers to the whereabouts of Brittney Wood, the single mother missing for more than two years.

"The search for Brittney will go on until she is found," says assistant district attorney Teresa Heinz. "There is always hope that Brittney is alive I think in practicality I think its more of a recovery. I hate to say that because I'm not one to give up hope on anything but. I think after this extent this length of time I think that's where their efforts would be."

Prosecutors believe Brittney was also a victim of the sex ring where children were passed around from one adult to another. The timing of her disappearance is also suspect. "I don't think we are ever know the answer to that question unless we find Brittney."

Man charged in Wood family child sex investigation pleads guilty

BAY MINETTE, Alabama — A man whose family is suspected of having sex with underage relatives pleaded guilty Thursday to charges of second-degree rape and second-degree sodomy.

Dustin Kent, 38, of Mobile, will be sentenced Oct. 23 during a hearing before Circuit Court Judge Jody Bishop at the Baldwin County Courthouse in Bay Minette.

The charges Kent pleaded guilty to stemmed from him having sex with a girl who was between 12 and 16 years old, Assistant District Attorney Teresa Heinz said.

Dustin Kent

Kent also was accused of sexually abusing another girl. The charges in the case were dropped as a part of Kent's plea deal, Heinz said.

Kent is the uncle of Brittney Wood, who has been missing since 2012. Wood was 19 years old when she went missing.

Wood's family members and friends of the family have been accused of passing their children back and forth for sex. The investigation has resulted in arrests in Baldwin and Mobile counties.

Kent is expected to plead guilty to sex abuse-related charges in Mobile County, Kent's attorney, John Beck, said.

A plea date has not been set. Beck said the parameters of Kent's plea are still being worked out.

One of the two victims in the Baldwin County cases was in the courtroom Thursday morning when Kent pleaded guilty.

Heinz said the plea was a huge relief for the girl because it is one less person she will have to testify against in court about the "horrible things that he did."

"This has been such a long process for her," Heinz said. "I am just glad that she entrusted me with doing what's best for her. I just want her to be able to come out of this with something left in her childhood."

Heinz said she believes the other victim also will be pleased with Kent's plea deal because of the prison term Kent will get.

Heinz said she couldn't say how much time Kent will get as a result of his deal.

"A lot of it is still up in the air depending on his cooperation," she said.

Beck said Kent has decided to take responsibility for his actions.

"He will continue to cooperate with the authorities and provide any information that maybe helpful in the investigations," Beck said.

Man charged in Wood family sex investigation says he's innocent, rejects plea deal

BAY MINETTE, Alabama — An Eight Mile man who is charged in a child sex abuse investigation rejected a plea deal Wednesday after telling his attorney he's innocent.

William Brownlee, 50, appeared in Baldwin County Circuit Judge Jody Bishop's courtroom Wednesday morning because he was expected to accept a plea offer from the Baldwin County District Attorney's Office.

Thomas Pilcher, Brownlee's attorney, said after he arrived in court his client told him that he had decided not to take the offer because he "shouldn't go to jail for doing something he hasn't done."

"It was a surprise this morning when I walked in, and he told me he had changed his mind," Pilcher said.

Brownlee is charged with second-degree sexual abuse and second-degree sodomy in Baldwin County. He also has sex abuse-related charges in Mobile County.

Brownlee was a friend of the late Donald Holland, an uncle of Wood's. Holland drove a black sport utility vehicle to a secluded clearing overlooking the Fish River in Baldwin County's Marlow community on June 1, 2012, and and shot himself in the head.

The deal

Baldwin County Assistant District Attorney Teresa Heinz said Brownlee was offered deals on his cases in Baldwin and Mobile counties.

If Brownlee had accepted the deal on his Baldwin County cases, Heinz said she was going to recommend a 10-year sentence.

Heinz said Brownlee's Mobile County deal included a recommended sentence of 15 years in prison.

Heinz said Brownlee would have served the sentences concurrently if he had accepted the offer.

As a result of rejecting the Baldwin County deal, Brownlee will face trials in Baldwin and Mobile counties and will be looking at substantially more time in prison, officials said.

Heinz said Brownlee could end up serving consecutive prison sentences.

Heinz warned Brownlee that if he didn't accept the offer from her office that he would not get another chance to take it.

"Once we get past this point all deals are off the table," she said.

Cold feet

The victim was in the courtroom for Brownlee's hearing.

Heinz said she had no indication that Brownlee might not accept the deal until she arrived in court Wednesday.

She said she had prepared the victim, as she always does with victims, that there was a chance there could be a last-minute change.

"I was kind of beginning to get that feeling that he was having some trouble with things," Heinz said. "I was hoping that it was trouble with forms, but he says that wasn't it."

Pilcher and Brownlee talked several times before the hearing started. When they went before the judge, Pilcher informed Bishop of Brownlee's decision.

Pilcher also told the judge that Brownlee made the decision against his advice.

"The deal was a fair deal, in my opinion, considering the facts that I have been provided up to this point," Pilcher said after the hearing.

When asked during the hearing why he didn't want to accept the deal, Brownlee said, "The things I was being told and the things I'm being shown are not the same."

Brownlee also asked the judge for a change of venue.

"Well, you're not going to get that," Bishop said.

Two in Wood family child sex investigation take plea deals

By Thyrie Bland | tbland@al.com

BAY MINETTE, Alabama — Two men charged in the Wood family child sex investigation resolved their cases Wednesday afternoon by accepting plea deals.

Randall Wood, 44, of Mobile, pleaded guilty to a second-degree sodomy charge. Donald Holland Jr., 22, of Daphne, was given youthful offender status.

Wood and Holland had separate hearings before Baldwin County Circuit Court Judge Jody Bishop at the Baldwin County Courthouse.

Randall Wood is Brittney Wood's uncle. Holland is the son of Donald "Donnie" Holland, who was Brittney Wood's uncle. Donald "Donnie" Holland committed suicide in 2012.

The Baldwin County District Attorney's Office dropped incest and second-degree sexual abuse charges against Randall Wood in exchange for his plea.

Randall Wood's sentencing on the sodomy charge has been scheduled for Oct. 23.

The sodomy charge carries a penalty of two to 20 years in prison. Baldwin County Assistant District Attorney Teresa Heinz said the sentence that she recommends for Donald Holland Jr. will depend on his cooperation in the future.

Randall Wood's attorney, Pascal Bruijn, said he was glad the District Attorney's Office made an offer in his client's cases.

"They could take you to trial, and the maximum is so severe in a case like this that you don't ever want to take a case like this to trial if you are guilty," Bruijn said. "They had the evidence to back it up, so he decided to plead guilty."

Randall Wood also is facing charges in Mobile County in connection with the child sex investigation. He will enter a guilty plea in Mobile County Circuit on Thursday, Bruijn said.

Donald Holland Jr. was arrested on charges of second-degree rape, second-degree sexual abuse and incest. He previously asked for youthful offender status in his case, but the court denied his request.

Wednesday's hearing was held behind closed-doors. The cases against Donald Holland Jr. will be sealed as a result of his youthful offender status.

Under state law, a judge can grant youthful offender status to a person charged with a crime that happened when the person was under 21 years old.

Heinz said Donald Holland Jr. was not sentenced during the hearing. She said his sentence will depend on his cooperation in the future.

The victim was in the courtroom Wednesday for the three hearings.

"This is an extremely overwhelming process," Heinz said. "It's something that they've waited for so long for results and then finally all of it is starting to hit all at once. It takes a toll on people."

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Dustin Kent pleaded guilty and Chessie Wood entered a not guilty plea in court in Mobile County on Thursday, August 7.

Kent pleaded guilty to second degree rape and sodomy. As part of his plea deal, Kent’s charge of first degree rape was downgraded to a second degree charge, and his other sex crime charges were dismissed. He will face a sentencing hearing on November 13, and could face two to 20 years in prison.

Kent and Wood’s cases are both part of an alleged sex ring officials said spans Mobile and Baldwin counties.

Mother of Brittney Wood wants a trial

Chessie Wood’s not guilty plea means her case will go to trial, which she maintains will prove her innocence.

Wood is the mother of Brittney Wood, a 20-year-old woman who has been missing since 2012. Officials have said that the sex ring investigation is not tied to Wood’s disappearance.

Wood is charged with sexually abusing a young family member as part of the alleged sex ring her other family members are allegedly involved in. Wood told FOX10 she is maintains her innocence, and said her sole focus is on finding her missing daughter.

“I shouldn’t be convicted, innocent people don’t get convicted,” said Wood after her court appearance Thursday morning. “I’m not going to take (a) plea deal.”

Mobile County Assistant District Attorney Nicki Patterson told FOX10 Thursday morning she has no trouble taking Wood to trial.

“The children in these cases are very descriptive, very graphic in their descriptions,” said Patterson, “I feel comfortable in putting them on the stand, and letting them tell a jury what happened to them.”

Circumstantial evidence suggests Brittney Wood is dead, sheriff says

By Thyrie Bland | tbland@al.com

on August 26, 2014 at 10:30 AM, updated August 26, 2014 at 12:48 PM

MOBILE, Alabama — Hope that Brittney Wood is still alive is flickering.

The grim reality is she could be dead and what happened to her may never be known.

"Do I think there is going to be a happy ending where Brittney is reunited with her family?" Baldwin County Assistant District Attorney Teresa Heinz said last week. "Realistically, no. You always want closure for people. The fact that she's still out there missing just leaves this family in a wreck, just wondering.

"As a parent, I would always keep hope alive. For her parents, I hope that something is done one way or another to where they can get some closure," Heinz said.

No one can say for sure what happened to Wood. There is only a trail of unanswered questions: Where is she? What led to her disappearance? Is she dead?

"If we look at it, there is more circumstantial evidence to say that she is dead," Baldwin County Sheriff Huey "Hoss" Mack said last week. "There is no evidence that would suggest she is still alive. We have her entered in the computer as a missing person. She has not come across anybody else's radar anywhere in the U.S. When you balance the evidence out, it's overwhelmingly that she is probably deceased."

While Wood has been missing, a dark family secret has been publicly revealed — children in her family were sexually abused by relatives and friends of relatives. New reports reveal that Brittney herself was the victim of sexual assault at the age of 9. The former boyfriend of her maternal grandmother was sentenced to life in prison for rape and a consecutive 10-year sentence on the sex abuse charge.

Arrests were made in Baldwin and Mobile counties. Of the 11 people arrested, four have agreed to plea deals. The cases against the remaining suspects are pending.

"Of course, we are hoping that during the process of these prosecutions something will lead us to additional information (about Wood)," Mobile County Assistant Attorney Nicki Patterson said. "Unfortunately, it has not yet."

Mack said whether Wood's disappearance is related to the sex abuse investigation "would be an assumption at this point."

"Obviously, one would tend to think that it probably did have some bearing one way or the other," the sheriff said. "But that would be dependent upon who actually murdered her. That may tell the rest of the story."

Brittney Wood's stepmother, Stephanie Hanke, said she is trying to hold on to hope that her stepdaughter is still alive.

"You don't want to ever give up hope, I mean, even as bad as it looks," she said. "But you don't want to set yourself up thinking the best when you need to go ahead and prepare for the worst."

Heinz said there is still reason to think that Brittney Wood's family could get some closure. She said there are still several suspects whose cases have not been prosecuted, and someone could have answers to the questions surrounding Brittney Wood's disappearance.

She said the four suspects who agreed to plea bargains were asked about Brittney Wood's disappearance and so will anyone else who wants a deal.

"I am still hopeful," Heinz said. "We still have a few more people that I'd like to talk to, a few more cases that are out on the table that we haven't made offers in yet. I'm hoping that one of those people have the information that we need."
