Family remembers slain dancer

HAMMOND, La. – Family and friends of Jaren Lockhart gathered to say a final farewell to the
22-year-old who was gruesomely killed three weeks ago – her dismembered body discovered on Mississippi beaches.

Emotions were running understandably high at a service that Jaren’s family preferred to call a celebration of her life.

“She loved dance, music, art, anything that was fun,” recalled Christa Bourque, a friend. “She embraced it with everything in her being.”

Dozens showed up to the Brandon Thompson funeral home to show Jaren Lockhart exactly that – love. Bourque was decked out in hot pink and black, the 22-year-old’s favorite colors.

Bourque said Jaren’s brother Lance wore the same colors. “She’s the one who dressed us,” said Bourque of Jaren.

Friends and family say Jaren loved being a mother, writing, dreaming of being a hairdresser and dancing. Originally from Albany, Lockhart was living and working in New Orleans as a dancer on Bourbon Street. Her elementary school drill team teacher, Catherine McCrea, stopped by to offer condolences.

“She was a very sweet child, a very smart child,” said McCrea. “I hate that this happened to her. I pray that God, that her family gets some closure.”

$1 million bond set for Sanchez

Ricks signs paperwork raising bond from $1,500 to $1 million

AMITE---On Tuesday, a 21st Judicial District Court Judge raised the bond for suspect Margaret Sanchez, who was arrested on traffic violations in Tangipahoa Parish after being wanted for questioning in the death and dismemberment of a New Orleans woman.

Sanchez, 28, remains housed at the Tangipahoa Parish Jail in Amite. She now awaits $1 million bond, reliable sources at the Amite Courthouse told AN17.com on Tuesday.

Bond was previously set at $1,500.

Arrested last week on traffic violations, Sanchez was charged earlier this week with harboring a sex offender, which is a felony. Reliable sources say that as a result of that charge, Sanchez has also been subjected to a DNA swab, which is customary on all felony arrests.

Suspect in Jaren Lockhart killing and dismemberment is extradited to face sex charge

Published: Monday, June 25, 2012, 3:15 PM     Updated: Monday, June 25, 2012, 3:50 PM
By The Times-Picayune

Terry Speaks, a suspect in the killing and dismemberment of Bourbon Street dancer Jaren Lockhart, has been extradited out of Louisiana to face federal charges in North Carolina of failing to register as a sex offender. He is currently being held at the Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City, according to the website for the federal Bureau of Prisons.

 ::snipping2::

Don Bass, chief deputy for the Hancock County Sheriff's Office, said Speaks' extradition will not affect his office's investigation in any way. "It doesn't bother us in the least," he said.

"As long as he's in custody, we know where to find him."

Bass said he expects to hold another debriefing on the case this week.

Speaks, 39, has several convictions in Surry County, N.C.: for sexually abusing a 14-year-old, assaulting a woman and committing domestic violence. Earlier this year, a federal grand jury there indicted him on charges of failing to register as a sex offender after his 2003 conviction on the sex charge.

On June 15, a federal judge in New Orleans ordered Speaks extradited to North Carolina to face that new charge.

Hold on Lockhart suspect lifted by judge
Margaret Sanchez' bond set at $251,000
UPDATED 6:14 PM CDT Jun 21, 2012

HAMMOND, La. - The woman held on unrelated charges who is being investigated in the death and disappearance of Jaren Lockhart had her hold lifted by a Tangipahoa judge on Thursday.

Margaret Sanchez and Terry Speaks were arrested last week on unrelated charges, but are being called suspects by investigators in the case.

Speaks and Sanchez were the last known people to have seen Lockhart alive after the three were spotted in surveillance video from the Temptations gentlemen's club where Lockhart worked.

In a hearing in Tangipahoa Parish, Sanchez' hold placed on her out of Mississippi was lifted, meaning she can now bond out of jail.

Her bond was reset on Thursday night from $1 million to $251,000. Officials said a judge thought Sanchez was going to be charged in Lockhart's death, but reduced it when the charge was found to be harboring a sex offender.

No one has been charged in her death.

Judge reduces bond for suspect in French Quarter dancer's murder
Bond reduced from $250,000 to $35,000

UPDATED 9:04 AM CDT Jun 28, 2012

AMITE, La. -  A state judge has reduced the bond for a Kenner woman suspected but not charged in the death and dismembering of New Orleans dancer.

The Advocate reports Judge Ernest Drake reduced Margaret Sanchez's bond from $250,000 to $35,000 on Wednesday.

The charges against Sanchez include failure to signal, resisting an officer by giving misinformation and harboring a sex offender.

Drake said the $250,000 bond exceeded the judicial district's own guidelines even for defendants in a murder case.

Neither Sanchez nor Speaks has been charged in Lockhart's death.

If the couple in custody killed Jaren, I wish they'd hurry up and charge them because the longer it takes the more I keep coming back to PB.  I do think there is a good possibility that she knew one or both of the suspects!

May not mean anything, but it's creepy to me!

Not sure if it was posted here or not, I've read so much on FB etc...  But there was mention of Margaret Sanchez being interviewed about another case for television.  In reading around some think that it may be concerning Addie Hall who was murdered by her boyfriend Zack Bowen in New Orleans.  The story about this murder is going to be on Final Witness Wednesday night.  I'll probably record it and watch it to see if she's mentioned or interviewed.  Some say she was (or claimed to be) friends with them.

FINAL WITNESS: Graveyard Love

IT’S LOVE IN THE TIME OF KATRINA, AS TWO YOUNG ADULTS COME TO TRAGIC ENDS AFTER THE HURRICANE, ON ABC’S “FINAL WITNESS”
“Graveyard Love” – Zack Bowen and Addie Hall were both young and beautiful – charismatic fixtures of New Orleans’ bohemian French Quarter in 2005. But they were also a pair of damaged souls. A free spirit who wrote poetry and taught dance, Addie was also on the run from a troubled past. And Zack wasn’t just the beloved bartender and talented musician known throughout the Quarter; he was an Army veteran scarred by his time in Kosovo and Iraq. Zack and Addie fell in love just weeks before Hurricane Katrina, but the bond they formed couldn’t survive in its wake. As the city slowly recovered, Zack and Addie’s relationship deteriorated, their passion for each other spilling over into clash after clash – until Zack could no longer keep his demons at bay, and a murderous night changed everything. Told from the victim’s point of view, this episode of “Final Witness” includes gripping, first-person accounts of the murder case by Zack and Addie’s friends, Zack’s mom, Addie’s employer and others. “Graveyard Love” airs WEDNESDAY, JULY 4 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Margaret Sanchez Talks About A Murdered, Dismembered Woman on WGNO

Curt Sprang
WGNO News
July 3, 2012

METAIRIE, LA— When you're making your Fourth of July plans, be sure to include the new ABC program Final Witness  on your schedule. The program looks at real crimes but tells their story from the victims' perspectives. The show also interviews people close to the cases.

This week's episode focuses on the death and dismemberment of Addie Hall in New Orleans in 2006. You may remember, Hall's boyfriend killed her and then jumped to his own death from a French Quarter hotel.

It's a chilling story. But wait until you see who ABC interviews as part of the program. Margaret Sanchez! The same woman who is linked to the death and dismemberment of a French Quarter dancer.

I just finished watching the show again, it was almost surreal watching it the first time so I wanted to make sure I hadn't missed anything.  The show was recorded long before Jaren's murder but I wanted to observe everything about Margaret Sanchez.

Margaret Sanchez was on throughout the entire show.

She met Addie Hall when they were both bartender's in one of the clubs in the French Quarter.  She said from the first day she met her, Addie was her best friend, her sister..."anything that a woman could be for another woman"...she was that for Margaret Sanchez "until she died".

Margaret told several things about Addie, and a few about Zack during the show.

At the end of the show...

Margaret was crying when she said: "He just snapped, I can imagine just shock...what am I gonna do...get rid of the body...that would be anybody's first thought.  What did I just do, how do I fix this?  He was going to try to be cold and callous and pass it off like she had just left because Addie would just up and leave like that.  But because he was a real person, he couldn't allow himself to do that.  He couldn't allow himself to be that kind of monster."

There was a segment with Zack's mom and then:

Margaret was still crying when she said: "I don't believe that Zack meant to kill Addie, I think that they got into one of their arguments and between the drugs and the alcohol and both of them just having enough of the bad that it escalated to what it did.  Addie was a good person, Zack was a good person; they just got dealt bad cards and they made the best out of the cards they were dealt.  But in the end, a bad hand is still a bad hand."

Have to wonder about Margaret Sanchez.

Is she that kind of monster?  Why isn't she talking to the authorities and telling them everything she knows about what happened to Jaren?

She seemed so sad about her friends Addie and Zack.

Were her tears for real?

What about Jaren?  She was a good person too.  She has a little girl that will grow up and know how her mother died one day, how pieces of her body washed up on different beaches for days...did they ever even find ALL of her?

Nothing will ever make sense of what happened to Jaren, but she deserves justice!  Her little girl and everyone that loved her deserves justice!

Start talking Margaret Sanchez, you know what happened to Jaren after she walked out of that club with you and your boyfriend.  If you don't you're still a monster whether you took part in the murder or not!  jmo

Has MS been dismembering bodies and throwing guys to their deaths?  I've not had time to watch the show linked above, but really, what are the chances that a woman is linked to two cases like these?

I know, it's weird isn't it?  I've been reading around and you're not the only one thinking that way.

I don't know what to think.  She was never a suspect in Addie Hall's murder, Zack Bowen left a confession in his pocket when he jumped to his death...and a more detailed confession in Addie's journal in the apartment where her remains were found.  I know this is terrible but since I watched the show tonight I'm just hoping all of Jaren's body was recovered and that those sicko's didn't cook parts of her like Zack Bowen did Addie.  I'm sure Margaret knew every single detail of that!

Jaren Lockhart Murder Suspects Stayed, Dyed Hair at Metairie Home Hours Before Arrest

METAIRIE— A Metairie husband and wife say they feel used, abused and unsafe after having an on-the-run couple suspected of Jaren Lockhart's murder in their house.

In an exclusive interview with WGNO News Wednesday, the anonymous Metairie couple said they housed Margaret Sanchez and her boyfriend, Terry Speaks the night before their June 12 arrest.

The interviewees didn't reveal their identities because they said they were afraid for their safety.

The couple says they were unaware that days earlier, Sanchez and Speaks left Bourbon Street's Temptations strip club with 23-year-old dancer, Jaren Lockhart, whose dismembered body parts later washed up on Mississippi beaches.

"We were best friends. I considered her my best friend for quite some time", the woman explained with her husband by her side and their small daughter playing nearby.

Sanchez and the Metairie woman became friends in May of 2011 after meeting at Louisiana Specialty Hospital where the woman said they were treated for bipolar disorder.

"The last time we saw [Speaks and Sanchez] was the Monday before they were arrested. She packed quite a few bags, saying they were being evicted from her house and they were going to be staying the night with us."

The unnamed woman, who with her husband contends they had no knowledge that Speaks and Sanchez could have had any connection to Lockhart's murder also said Sanchez even brought up what was dominating the local news at the time: the fact that Lockhart went missing and had her torso, decapitated head and limbs found on beaches in Mississippi.

"'Hey, did u hear about the stripper that went missing?' She mentioned that a couple times."

The Metairie couple said Speaks and Sanchez departed Tuesday after staying over the previous night, but not before dying their hair in the family's kitchen and bathroom sink.

"Hindsight being 20/20, they were trying to hide from something," she said.

Once it was learned Speaks and Sanchez were arrested as persons of interest in Lockhart's murder, the Metairie couple called the FBI and would soon have several agents and police officers in their home.

A laptop and clothes were taken by authorities.

Some things Margaret Sanchez said about Addie Hall last night on Final Witness regarding Addie being bipolar.

"Addie, I found out was bipolar, when you're bipolar you sometimes don't have control over how nice or how mean you are.  You lash out at people and you're in you're own opinion not good."

"They started partying more, partaking more in alcohol and other things.  The honeymoon and the magic from Katrina was pretty much gone."

"Addie was out of her Lithium, she said there was no way she was going to be able to afford her medication.  When you're bipolar, if it's untreated; it gets worse."

The part about no way Addie was going to be able to afford her medication seemed odd to me, since at the same part of the story Addie and Zack seemed to be able to afford a lot of cocaine.

Lockhart murder investigators look for clues in TV interview

HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -
Hancock County Sheriff's Investigators spent much of the day Thursday analyzing the ABC crime show "Final Witness." It featured one of the prime suspects in the murder of Jaren Lockhart.

Margaret Sanchez was friends with Addie Hall whose murder was portrayed on the show. Like Lockhart, Hall's body was dismembered, but her body ports were found in pots on a stove.

Hancock County investigators watched Margaret Sanchez closely as she told a national audience about the gruesome murder of a woman she called her best friend. One particular part was chilling as Sanchez described what she imagined the killer was thinking.

"He just snapped," she said. "What am I going to do to get rid of the body? That would be anybody's first thought; How do I fix this?"

Glenn Grannan, Chief Investigator with the Hancock County Sheriff's Department, remarked after hearing Sanchez's statement, "If he killed your best friend, wouldn't you be upset? She felt like the dismemberment was the proper thing to do. It's very strange. It didn't appear to be normal behavior."

Grannan said he found it odd Sanchez seemed so understanding about the man who killed her friend and then took his own life. And that gave them insight into Sanchez as a suspect.

"What we determined basically maybe added just a little bit of conformation of what we believe is Margaret Sanchez's basic character. Other than that, it's not helpful in trying to produce the kind of evidence we need to complete this investigation," explained Grannan.

Sanchez has not been charged in the death of Jaren Lockhart, a New Orleans woman whose body parts washed ashore on the coast last month.

The crimes aren't linked, but investigators can't deny the odd coincidence that Sanchez's friend was dismembered and now she's a suspect in a similar murder.

"Some of the comments Miss Sanchez makes are consistent with some of the behavior that we felt makes her the prime suspect for us and continues to make her a prime suspect," said Grannan.

Investigators now want to speak with some of the other people interviewed on the show who know Margaret Sanchez. They also want to see an un-edited version of Sanchez's interview.

The interview with Margaret Sanchez was shot 15 months ago. The producers of the show have added a note on the Final Witness website about her connection to the Jaren Lockhart case.
