SANFORD - After a day spent in jury selection, attorneys in the trial of George Zimmerman have switched gears this afternoon for testimony on state audio experts who say it’s more likely Trayvon Martin, not Zimmerman, who was screaming for help before the shooting.

The defense has a biometrics expert, James L. Wayman, who's testifying this afternoon. He's expected to say the audio work done by state experts should not be trusted.

Those prosecution experts testified two weeks ago, as did others for the defense, but the issue was delayed because Wayman wasn’t available. Defense attorneys have asked Circuit Judge Debra S. Nelson to prevent the state experts testifying in the trial.

SANFORD - Attorneys in the George Zimmerman trial worked well into the evening on Monday, taking testimony disputing state audio experts who say it’s more likely that 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, not Zimmerman, was heard screaming for help before the teen's shooting.

The testimony came after almost a full day of jury selection in the trial. Court wrapped up for the day about 8:30 p.m., and resumes at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

A defense biometrics expert who testified Monday afternoon, James L. Wayman, said the audio work done by state experts should not be trusted.


The screams -- captured in the background of a 911 call -- are insufficient in quality and duration to identify anyone, Wayman said. And in order to compare them, something Wayman said he wouldn't try, the exact conditions of the screams would have to be replicated, he said.

"This is a fragile technique," Wayman said, adding that in this case there's "simply not enough data, by anybody's estimation."


The prosecution experts testified two weeks ago, as did others for the defense, but the issue was delayed because Wayman wasn’t available then. Defense attorneys have asked Circuit Judge Debra S. Nelson to prevent the state experts from testifying in the trial.

No decision was reached Monday. The state will recall one of its experts, Tom Owen, to testify again on Wednesday.

Zimmerman says he’s the one heard yelling in the 911 audio. The 911 call was placed by a neighbor who heard the struggle between Zimmerman and Trayvon.

One key state expert, Alan R. Reich, says the cries are Trayvon, and that the teen can be heard yelling “I’m begging you.”

However, Wayman said Reich is using techniques that were discredited decades ago.

Before the hearing on experts began, Nelson granted a defense request to keep jurors' personal information a secret for a cooling off period after trial. The judge did not settle on a time period that protection would last.

Earlier Monday, attorneys continued jury selection, looking for Seminole County residents who remain undecided on Zimmerman's guilt or innocence in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Feb. 26, 2012, in Sanford.

Four jurors questioned Monday were asked to return Wednesday, a sign they've gotten past the pre-trial publicity phase of questioning. Monday is the trial's sixth day.

One potential juror called for questioning this afternoon, H-27, revealed that he at one point donated to Zimmerman's defense fund. He was the first potential juror questioned so far who has said that. H-27 was not asked to return later this week, a likely sign he was dismissed.

The next juror called, H-29, said he doesn't have an opinion on Zimmerman's guilt or innocence. He  said he didn't like the protests after the case, which caused him to lose interest in it.

"We had a little circus come to town, with celebrities... That quite honestly turned me off," he said. The potential juror said he has seen images of Zimmerman and Trayvon.

"This is a tragic case," said H-29, who was asked to come back on Wednesday. "There are no winners here."

The juror called after H-29, a Hispanic woman identified as H-31, was briefly questioned but then sent away after she said that being sequestered for a month for the trial would be a hardship. She's a single mother of two, the juror said, and wouldn't get paid by her employer while serving.

Next up was H-35, a young woman who said she knows little about the case. H-35 said she heard an "altercation happened... I guess there was a gun involved, because he was shot."

The young woman said serving on the jury would be difficult because she has to move by the end of the month. She was asked to come back on Wednesday.

Monday morning, the attorneys questioned a man identified as H-18, who said he knew a young person was shot and "the one that did it" was in the Neighborhood Watch, but otherwise hasn't followed the case. He was asked to come back Wednesday.

The first juror called Monday, identified as potential juror H-7, said he was aware that the case became a "brouhaha," but didn't understand why. H-7 said he'd seen photos of Zimmerman's injuries from the night of the shooting, and thought he "was in some altercation with someone."
The juror, an older white male, said the protests about the shooting were a "nuisance" locally, but he hasn't decided on Zimmerman's guilt or innocence. H-7 was also asked to return.

The bulk of the work in Nelson's courtroom since the start of trial has been jury selection, and the same was true each day last week. The focus today remained the same: pretrial publicity and what potential jurors know and how they feel about the Miami Gardens 17-year-old's death.
