Search continues for missing FBI agent

Search-and-rescue teams resumed their hunt Sunday for an FBI agent who was last seen at his Burbank home Thursday, when he was thought to be despondent and possibly suicidal, police said.

Stephen Ivens, 35, a Los Angeles-based agent specializing in national security, left on foot from his home in the 1700 block of Scott Road, his family told police Friday morning.

Ivens, an avid hiker who is married and the father of a 1-year-old son, was believed to be carrying his handgun but is not considered to be a threat to anyone but himself, according to authorities. They have not said why he was despondent, and urge anyone who spots him to call authorities rather than approach him.

Bloodhounds on Saturday tracked Ivens’ scent toward the rugged Verdugo Mountains, where the search picked up this morning.

Search continues for missing Burbank FBI agent, described as suicidal

BURBANK, Calif. (KABC) -- A massive search continues Sunday for a missing FBI agent who was reported missing from his Burbank home last week.

Stephen Ivens, 35, has not been seen in days, and now his family and co-workers are concerned about his safety.

Police believe Ivens took his government-issued handgun, because it was not found in the house.

FBI agents, sheriff's department rescuers and police officers combed the Verdugo Mountains on Saturday after K-9s tracked his scent to the rugged area.

Ivens is known as an avid hiker and runner. However, the FBI agent has been distraught, so his colleagues believe he may have gone to the mountains to harm himself and not to exercise.

I hope he is found safe, but it just seems so highly unlikely.

Search in Verdugo Mountains for missing FBI agent is stopped
May 24, 2012

The search in the Verdugo Mountains for a missing FBI agent has been stopped and investigators will instead focus on tips from the public, according to Burbank police.

Authorities had been actively combing the nearby mountains for 35-year-old FBI agent Stephen Ivens, who went missing from his Burbank home nearly two weeks ago.

Burbank Police Sgt. Darin Ryburn said Wednesday a final search was carried out over the weekend by members of the Ventura and Los Angeles County sheriff’s departments, but they came up empty.

In the days after the May 11 disappearance, authorities from several agencies mounted a massive search — initially focused on the Verdugo Mountains — using helicopters, dogs and foot patrols.

It took on added urgency because officials said he probably had his department-issued gun and could be a danger to himself, although they declined to say why.

But with no progress, Ryburn said the effort had turned into a search driven by leads from the public — of which there have been few.

Volunteer search effort for missing FBI agent comes up empty
More than a month after his disappearance, his wife says she 'can't just give up on him.'

June 19, 2012

More than 30 people volunteered this past weekend to join in the ongoing search for FBI Special Agent Stephen Ivens, who disappeared from his Burbank home more than a month ago.

The volunteers were “mostly strangers who cared enough to help us out,” said his wife, Thea Ivens.

The group left McCambridge Park in Burbank at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday and split into two groups, focusing on either the Verdugo Mountains or bus routes.

On Saturday, 15 people from the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team also helped search Mount La Tuna, La Tuna Canyon, Grotto Foot Trail, Hoftetter Trail and areas that the FBI, Burbank Police Department and other agencies didn't cover, Thea Ivens said.

The second group focused on placing fliers on bus routes and asking drivers if Stephen Ivens' photo looked familiar.

The goal, she said, was to “find clues or a body.”

Bloodhounds tracked Stephen Ivens' scent to the Verdugo Mountains last month but officials acknowledged it could have been from a previous hike and not from the day he was reported missing on May 11.

Burbank police are being kept aware of any findings, Thea Ivens said, adding that all volunteers were asked to call police or the FBI if they found something.
After Stephen Ivens disappeared from his home in the 1700 block of Scott Road in Burbank, authorities from several law enforcement agencies launched a massive search that took on added urgency because officials said he likely had his department-issued gun and could be a danger to himself.

Authorities have long since called off active, on-the-ground searches, switching instead to a strategy of following up on leads, of which they say there have been few.

“No one is actually looking for him, physically looking,” Thea Ivens said. “How can there be leads if there is no media awareness? How can we find him if no one is looking? That's why I'm doing this.”

It appears to be suicide, but perhaps the autopsy will clarify.  Very sad. There may have been a sliver of hope he could be found alive.  His family knows where he is now, and can lay him to rest.  I think not knowing would be torture.
