New and old tips led to new appeal in abducted cousins case, chief says
June 25, 2013 11:45 am

Smock said the newly released information was a combination of old and new reports.

“Earlier on, within the first two or three months of the girls going missing, as we were interviewing people ... a couple of different people identified the vehicle as being on Arbutus,” Smock said. “A few months ago, we received some information from another party who had seen a similar vehicle on the east side of the lake.”

The latest information came from a woman who assumed police had already been told about what she saw, but they had not, Smock said.

He said no description is available of the person or persons in the vehicle.

Additionally, the abduction of two girls in Dayton and the subsequent murder of one of them grabbed investigators’ attention just days after they received the latest information on the white SUV.

Officials are investigating if the suspect in the Dayton case, Michael Klunder, who committed suicide, is linked to Lyric and Elizabeth.

“We are still working on that,” Smock said.

Smock said the SUV sightings are different from reports of a white vehicle tied to an attempted abduction in Cedar Rapids. In that case, the vehicle was described as a white van.

“This is an SUV, a large SUV,” Smock said. “It has been described as an older model Chevy Suburban, — but we don’t know that for sure — boxy and definitely full sized.”

Smock said investigators have already received a number of phone calls following their request for the public’s assistance. “We have a lot of people calling in ... and we will follow up on all those calls,” he said. “But we are really looking for specific information.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Tip Line at (319) 232-6682 or Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers at (855) 300-8477 or email ourmissingiowagirls@dps.state.ia.us.

Slain Iowa Girl's Father Pleads Guilty In Drug Case
Story Created: Jun 26, 2013 at 9:02 AM CDT
(Story Updated: Jun 26, 2013 at 9:02 AM CDT  )

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — The father of one of two slain Iowa cousins has pleaded guilty to more drug-related charges.

Dan Morrissey made his pleas Monday in a Waterloo courtroom. The charges included conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine. He pleaded guilty to two of the charges and entered an Alford plea on the other two. Under the Alford plea, Morrissey didn't admit guilt but acknowledged the prosecution likely could prove the charges.

In March he pleaded guilty to several drug-related charges in Davenport.

New focus on vehicle gives parents of abducted girls some hope
June 25, 2013

Elizabeth Collins’ father, Drew, is hoping the new information will lead to an arrest. “We were hoping for more information, you know, something more than this vehicle description. But we are just always waiting for the day to find out what really happened,” Collins said.

Heather Collins, Elizabeth’s mother, is urging anyone with any information to step forward. “We are already going on a year. We had really hoped to have found the person (who did) this,” Collins said. Police believe the vehicle in question may have looked like a Chevy Suburban, a Ford Bronco or something similar.

The public is urged to call Evansdale police (319-232-6682) or Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers (1-855-300-TIPS) with any information they may have. A $150,000 reward remains available for anyone who provides a tip that leads to an arrest and conviction.

Slain cousins case frustrates as anniversary nears
53 minutes ago

EVANSDALE, Iowa — Nearly a year after two Iowa cousins were abducted and killed, family members and police remain frustrated by the investigation's slow progress.

Elizabeth Collins, 8, and Lyric Cook, 10, disappeared July 13, 2012, after riding their bikes near Meyer's Lake in Evansdale. Investigators from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and FBI are trying to determine what happened to the girls, who were found dead in December.

The girls' abduction has strained relationships among the extended family.

Lyric's mother, Misty Cook, has not commented publicly since the girls' bodies were found last December. Heather Collins said her relationship with Misty Cook wasn't the best beforehand, so there's little to go on now.

"It's just hard, and it only gets harder," said Wylma Cook, the girls' grandmother.

Lyric's father, Dan Morrissey, is awaiting sentencing on several drug and assault charges.

Not having answers about what happened is difficult.

"It's frustrating because you want to know, and you don't get those answers," Drew Collins said.

Evansdale Police Chief Kent Smock said he shares the frustration that there has been little progress to report in the case.

"I've never run into a case like this where there is just so little evidence that we found at the scene," he said. "This case has taken so many different twists and turns as we've followed up on it."

In general, missing person cases are difficult to solve, said Robert Lowery, senior executive director of the Missing Children Division of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

"There is an absence of facts and information that law enforcement has to work through," he said.

Smock said investigators are actively working to solve the case. Authorities also are trying to determine whether Michael Klunder could be connected to the abduction of Collins and Cook.

Hundreds gather for cousins' memorial
The event marks the anniversary of the two girls' abduction.
Jul. 13, 2013

EVANSDALE, IA. — The disappearance and deaths of Lyric Cook-Morrissey, 10, and Elizabeth Collins, 8, has troubled LeeAnn Tomlinson of Evansdale for a year.

On Saturday morning, Tomlinson lugged out her Harley-Davidson, wrapped on her bandana and wore her purple-and-pink shirt for the 125-mile “Memorial Ride and Drive for the Girls.”

“Every day you’re searching, you’re looking. No matter where you go, it’s in the back of your head,” Tomlinson said.

Hundreds of people in purple and pink garb gathered at Lofty’s Lounge, recognizing one year since the cousins vanished on July 13, 2012, while riding bikes. The girls’ bodies were discovered months later at Seven Bridges Wildlife Area in Bremer County.

“It’s been a hard year,” said Drew Collins, Elizabeth’s father. “We’re just ready for answers and ready to change some laws and get things moving in the right direction.”

Lyric Cook-Morrissey's dad going to prison for at least 30 years
UPDATED 5:22 PM CDT Sep 13, 2013

WATERLOO, Iowa —A judge has sentenced the father of one of the cousins abducted in Evansdale to prison on drug charges.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports Judge David Staudt sentenced 37-year-old Daniel Morrissey on Friday to up to 90 years in prison.  He has a mandatory minimum of 30 years in prison before parole.

Morrissey had earlier pleaded guilty and agreed to Alford pleas, which acknowledges evidence needed for a conviction, to charges involving the manufacture of methamphetamine and other drug offenses.

The Waterloo Courier newspaper reported that Morrissey had faced 235 years in prison if the charges were run consecutive, but in June he entered a plea agreement limiting his exposure to no more than 45 years behind bars.

The charges stem from incidents before and after the cousins disappeared.

Holy heck, that is a long sentence for drug charges.  Meth is evil for sure but dang, I don't know that I've ever seen a sentence that long for drug charges, even for manufacturing.

Lyric Cook’s mother arrested on drug charges in West Union
November 27, 2013 10:42 am

WEST UNION - The mother of one of two slain Evansdale cousins has been arrested on drug charges in Fayette County.

According to a report from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, they executed a search warrant, Monday, Jan.25, after a week-long investigation at 100 E. Franklin St. in West Union, where 36-year-old Misty Cook-Morrissey was living.

Also living at the residence was Todd Michael Henriksen, 25, formerly from Waterloo.

According to the Sheriff’s report, the investigation uncovered a methamphetamine and marijuana selling operation that had been going on for the last few months. It was reported that deputies recovered a large amount of cash, drugs, digital scales, packaging and evidence showing the distribution of controlled substances.

Slain Evansdale cousins case isn't cold, authorities insist
Dec. 5, 2013

Scant new information has been discovered or released in the year since the bodies of two Evansdale cousins were discovered in a heavily wooded conservation area in eastern Iowa, but law enforcement officials insist that the case is far from cold.

“We’ve had well over 1,100 leads on the investigation and we’re still getting a lot of calls from people who are just now remembering they were in a certain area or something seemed suspicious,” said Gerard Meyers, assistant director of field operations for the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

One year ago today, hunters discovered the bodies of Lyric Cook-Morrissey and Elizabeth Collins at Seven Bridges Wildlife Area in Bremer County.

Officials have not found any evidence linking Klunder to the Evansdale case, but they haven’t ruled him out either, Meyers said.

“We’re still leaving it on the table at this point,” Meyers said. “We don’t have substantial facts to articulate either way,” that Klunder was or wasn’t responsible.

Investigators are still waiting for some evidence to be analyzed at a specialized FBI crime lab, and Meyers said there is no timeline for when that analysis could be completed.

Authorities are also vetting a man who was arrested last week with Cook-Morrissey’s mother, Misty, in Fayette County. Misty Cook-Morrissey and Todd Michael Henriksen face felony drug charges after police found drugs, digital scales and other evidence showing drug distribution, police said.

“Our personnel had been in contact with the Fayette County authorities even before that,” Meyers said. “At this point, there’s no correlation.”

The pain of 2 Iowa girls' killings remains, but resolve in Evansdale only grows

Collins said his experience in 2012 would be comparable to sitting comfortably in the living room at home — until a semi truck barrels though at 80 miles per hour.

“I’ve kind of just watched things kind of crumble,” Collins said. “I don’t think the person that did this has any clue what they have done.”

His son, Kelly, 17, and daughters Amber, 11, and Callie, 9, had their childhoods stolen from them, Collins said.

They don't get to just go over to anybody's house. He doesn’t let them ride their bikes without an adult present. When someone forgets an item in the car, he walks with the child just a few feet out to the driveway.

Collins said he and Heather Collins had a good marriage. But the death of their eldest daughter led to them coping in different ways.

They split last year.

putting this snip from article up, a reprint from FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit
i had not read it b4, the more eyes the better

Unsolved: Eights years ago today, the bodies of Lyric Cook-Morrissey and Elizabeth Collins were discovered
Published: Dec. 5, 2020 at 10:03 PM EST
https://www.kcrg.com/2020/12/06/unsolved-eights-years-ago-today-the-bodies-of-lyric-cook-morrissey-and-elizabeth-collins-were-discovered/

According to a report by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier at the time, The FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, which develops profiles of suspects, released details from an FBI study and unveiled those conclusions.

The offender profile concluded, in part, that:

The offender is familiar with both Meyers Lake/Angels Park in Evansdale and Seven Bridges Wildlife Area in Bremer County;
The suspect chose Seven Bridges because he or she was familiar with the area and knew it was secluded;
The offender blends in with and may be part of the Evansdale, Bremer and surrounding communities;
The suspect likely used “quiet coercion” to gain the girls’ compliance into leaving Meyers Lake, using a ruse or threats of violence, and that other possible characteristics include:
The suspect may have been experiencing stress related to legal troubles, spousal problems, employment difficulties, financial strain or mental health issues in July 2012;
The suspect may avoid discussing the case or showing interest in the matter but is likely following developments in the media;
The offender may have attempted to abduct children or adults in the past;
Following the disappearance, the suspect may have altered his or her physical appearance, such as changing hair style and facial hair. The offender’s vehicle may also have been altered with a new paint job or re-upholstery.
The Courier also reported that “analysts’ experience with prior abduction cases points to one person being involved, but there are cases where more than one person was involved.”

In a press conference held at the Evansdale City Hall on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, Evansdale Chief of Police Kent Smock said authorities were focusing their efforts on anyone who might be familiar with the remote Bremer County woodland where Lyric and Elizabeth.
